Thank you for putting Chimes at Midnight up here. It's a lesser-known Shakespeare film, I think, and - as such - a hidden gem that many people can - and have already had the chance to - enjoy.
Sad. Heart-breaking and beautiful. The expression on the fat man's face says it all. Rutherford was wonderful. It is hard to understand how B C of the NY Times and John Simon panned this movie. Imperfect sound recording? What was out there in the mid sixties that came close to being as good? Or even today?
Well, not a bad movie after all, maybe even a brilliant one! This focus on Falstaff is charming but the quote and scene mingling and compression of so many stories is a bit bewildering; if one does know the Shakespeare plays used it is quite entertaining but if not one might get confused; and Monsieur Welles should have made more version of Shakespeare plays like his Othello; while his Macbeth is a bit dull.
This is truly a masterpiece, no doubt.... but I was hoping, since it mentioned there was text from Merry Wives of Windsor, that there would be a part in the middle where the action of The Merry Wives of Windsor would take place--it could be twice as long as a regular movie--that is a play about Falstaff, after all. This way, the movie's arguably about Hal. Boy it would be cool to see Orson Welles in The Merry Wives of Windsor!
King Hal's such a jerk!
