If your FACES disappear, you need to simply click, under the PARTICLE SYSTEM>VISUALIZATION>RENDER and click the emitter button, so it gets rendered, along with the particles.

@sb2killer If you have Blender 2.5, it is under the "simulation" category in the modifiers panel. If you have 2.49, it should be there. If you have none of the above, get 2.5
