i used to cycle like 5 miles each way to college on a single speed dirt jump bike, it would take me about 20 minutes and it saved me about £20-30 in bus fares every week. Some days i even cycled in pissing rain or 2 foot deep snow... and im from scotland and it rains a lot here.
These days im just too lazy and it would take nearly 40 minutes if i tried to cycle it today...
A cyclist without gloves is riding in temperatures which do not even rate as autumnal over here. Nor is he dressed for the cold. What is the point of this video if it doesn't remotely match the title? I ride almost every day of the year down to -15C, 5F. Including months of snow and ice. Car ownership requires no special skills, strength, masculinity or even average intelligence. Allegedly any fool can do it. As witnessed by the comments here. And, the countless lives lost to bad driving.
I enjoy biking in all weather. Especially as I ride along the bike path next to a line of 300 cars waiting to get into the downtown core. It's all about being prepared for the weather and dressing/riding carefully.
To think our familes, grandfathers and great grandfathers went to war for our countries, and gave everything they had, and died doing it. Yet there's a majority of 'entitled' north american motorists, who think riding a bike is 'gay', or too hard, or dangerous, or crazy , " in the rain ". I have to wonder what most people consider a 'challenge' nowadays ?
@Exadeful lol......Toronto has an annual snowfall of 52 inches and drops to temperatures of around - 35C in the winter. Its hard enough to get about on foot.
@MediaMocker lol Yeah the comparisons here on who is tougher gets more stupid every day. I use my bike to get around town. If it means I ride in 80F weather or -20f so be it. I am not trying to impress anyone. Just getting to my destination.
i live across the lake in cleveland the pot holes and bad rodes here call for some one who can actually build you wheels..im talking 36x(4) cross...the drivers here dont give a F about cyclist..i tried it one year and thought to myself to hell with this..ill ride my trainer and work out at the gym but im not going to take myself out of this world and my kids world to ride to work..its too dangerous..there is no respect in cleveland for riders..
Cycling in Toronto winters is like cycling on a cold autumn day. I am an year-round cyclist and i live in Montreal. Try that if you want to brag about cycling during winter-time. Toronto winters!! HAH!! They're nothing like Montreal winters.
I know several people who cycle year round to work in Cleveland, OH. I would like to do it but I don't know what they wear and how they make it through the deep snow and black ice.
I would like to see a documentary on this to see how it is done.
If I was in control, elevated pushbike freeways would get cyclists safe&dry across town NON STOP.
Wouldn't that be a great incentive for people to exercise?
Hanging above traffic these tubes are ventilated with fresh air as well, and being transparent, serve as a lighting fixture for the motorway below. Heck, you can even make the ventilation push the bikes ahead on long stretches!
Of course strictly push bikes; all others will be crushed :-) Keep on dreaming, I know...
@Nomasain I like the way you think. You remind me of myself. We could have the answer to all of the world's major problems, but no, no one will do it.
In my country around 1 or 2 million people daily use their bike from on to work. It's nothing special. Even with 30 cm snow on the road I used my bike this winter.
Ironically, it's not the weather that will stop you front commuting by bike in Toronto. It's your own mayor, Rob Ford. If he had his way, he would simply run us all over. I will stay in Vancouver safely tucked away in my bike lane, thanks.
Dude, there are people in Alaska that bike year round. I don't want to say me because some people think that would be bragging (even though it isn't. It's just a fun way to get from point A to point B).
I was looking up on youtube how to make snow tires but they shouldnt be allowed there or on roads whicgh us poor car drivers have to pay for in road tax. No Pay No Say

jesus christ i cycle to my school every fucking day with a shitty bike

It is a good idea to cycle to your work. I live in the Netherlands and almost everyone goes with the bike to school, but not many people got to work with it. I always feal a lot fitter when I cycled in the morning, it wakes you up a little.
@doomboy829 Tough? Ride the Tourlemet uphill, 2 days in row, then go on and win the TDF. Then, you can call yourself tough. I would consider commuting year round in any city in Canada a true badge of toughness.
Here in the Netherlands its the only way, many millions cycle year-round. Its the only way to get around town. Busride takes me up to 4 times as much time, by car almost double.
I am a year round rider in Winnipeg, -40, blizzards, iced roads from December through April. To me Toronto winter riding looks like a tropical vacation. LOL
Good for you, but I know some people (bike messengers mostly) who do it in Montreal year 'round. Even in blizzards... So biking in T.O. winters, no big deal...

you need a good tires... probably some designed for mud would fit.
i was riding this winter with continental explorers on front and back and it was ok, when there was a fresh snow i was changing front tire to continental vertical.
boy-barbie, this might be more than your overly teased head can handle, but if we lived in a world where bicycles were considered tough, your hair band heroes might have traded in their motorcycles and not bloated into sacks of crappuccino playing cheesy vegas hotels dry humping the memory of a career that ended once they weren't skinny and pretty anymore. kid, any glam rocker worth their weight in glitter knows you can never be too fucking skinny.
