  • so nice this piece this was my dads favorite tune so reminds me of you r i p dad

  • so beautiful !

  • I'd love to know the secret of tuning a piano like this one ... To get it out of tune by precisely the right amount to capture that latin dance-hall feel. Gorgeous.

  • The ending flips me out, Go Flaco !

  • how does rolling stone put this ham in the top 10 best guitar players

  • @zackdevan Well, I guess I can only surmise it's because Rolling Stone acknowledges that he's had an extremely successful career spanning almost a half a century and has done great studio work with many of the greats. Methinks it's hard to judge his abilities from just listening to this song.

  • @Kilchattan7 Dons gone, Mums 78 ..and I was listening to some Sevillianas which I think you'll find elsewhere and tumbled back to this...strange. Luv big Cuz

  • My Dad heard Maria on the radio and picked up his Chromatic harmonica and played it. He didn't read music, but played by ear. He had an old Gibson that he played too. And he got a trumpet and other instruments. We were very poor, but we had music. Brings tears to my eyes now. Two brothers are guitarists, I played piano and wax paper comb (along with my Mother) my brother who died played drums and guitar. Both gone so young. Thanks for this.

  • @karenseattle Very nice post, karenseattle. I had a similar upbringing with father talented musician. We too, poor. I just love this video and return to it from time to time.

  • @pattywolford Thank you Patty for commenting. Music is so special, isn't it? I know my memories are sweet with it and I am made happy by reading your note and I'm feeling a bond. This tune is so eerily beautiful. When I heard my Dad play this it effected me deeply. He also was a whistler. I never could get the hang of that!

  • I love to see Ry swayin to the music:):)

    lovely

  • @Kilchattan7 Funny LaZ, was replaying the original too :-))))

  • Absolutely love it!

  • Original Supergroup .

  • No matter how lowdown and rotten one might feel... music and musicians such as these will bring you up again...

Too long since this was played... so I've listened three times already!!!

  • what an heartrendingly soulful piece of work

    absolutely sensual

if only we could capture the soulfulness and yearnings of love in our everyday life

  • @druifje999 You really nailed it. God bless these wonderful musicians.

  • That exchange of glances and appreciation at 1:40 is just priceless - respect and admiration!

    I love this song.

  • Simplemente ¡SOPER!, que versión tan bella, ¡que sentimiento de cada uno de ellos, ¡TODOS!, ¡bien mbroders!

  • hermosa interpretacion de maria elena, y solos que brindan un viaje musical.

  • aw come on....ry cooder is the best! it's so nice to listen to...relax and enjoy it!

  • SHIT

  • very original, also really nice. huichol53.......

  • @huichol53: It is very nice, but not original if you live in Latin America.

  • When I hear the name Maria Elena. I think of the late Buddy Holly's wife.

  • @jjj1951 Same here....

  • @LoveLick7482 unusual hobby- Remind me NEVER to kiss you!

  • I think that this is my favourite song of all time - what a total taleny Ry Cooder is!! Long May He Run!!!

  • A latin love song filled the air

  • A latinn love song filled in the air

  • I can't stop listening to this. And, BonitaVerde, it is indeed a smooshy song and you should be proud.

This whole band is amazing. Thanks Ry.

    Peace to all.

  • @monyetbilis No, fuck you. . . idiot!

    Huh?

  • Grande Flaco!!!

  • Greatest Guitarplayer ever. It´s so wonderfull

  • Flaco Jiménez, sólo él puede tocar así, VIVA FLACO!!!

    Great VIDEO! ^-^

  • B E A T y F OO L

  • My aunt suggested I be named Maria Elena after this song which was big in the '40s (from what I hear). I had never heard it until I found out that Buddy Holly's wife was also named Maria Elena. Now that I hear it for the first time it does sound beautiful.....I am Cuban and even though I believe this is a Mexican song....it sounds so great....has much emotion. Wish Buddy was still here with us and, Maria Elena Holly, God bless you...you were his love and inspiration. Love, Maria Elena Rodriguez

  • Intoxicating.

  • eso suena mas español que la ostia

  • This arangement is just Sick! (I mean this as a complement.)

  • Orale Flaco! Eres un Genuis man!

  • viva el flacoo viva san antonio y viva mexico chingaooo

  • gracias poor este video es un tesoro arriva san antoniooooooo

  • What a great bunch of musicians. Flaco Jimenez is undoubtedly one of the best "acordionistas" in the world.

  • Well, its been a year later since my last comment on this video. I watch it now an then and get a thrill each time I watch and hear it. That to me is a tribute to these musicians. Very fine musicians. Very much appreciated.

  • He fancies himself

  • omg this is soo amazing and i really love it

    cooder is so genius

  • My parents named my sister Maria Elena after this song also! By the way, the accordian player is Flaco Jimenez, one of the greatest accordian players around who has played with just about everyone in Country and Tex-Mex music.

  • nice

  • delicious. probably one of the best interpretations from this beatiful masterpiece.

  • Maria Elena is a mexican song from Lorenzo Barcelata...

  • From portugues to english: Maria Helena you are My inspiration Mary Ellen has Listen to my heart In my melody Echoing your voice The same full moon There waiting for us. Helena recalls The time spent Helena mine Love does not just The flowers that kept A dried Maria Helena You are the verbena That withered.
  • Maria Helena is a brazilian song: from Lorenzo Barcelata / Russel / Haroldo Barbosa Lyrics: Maria Helena és tu A minha inspiração Maria Helena vem Ouvir meu coração Na minha melodia Ecoa a tua voz A mesma lua cheia Há de esperar por nós. Maria Helena lembra O tempo que passou Maria Helena o meu Amor não se acabou Das flores que guardei Uma secou Maria Helena És a verbena Que murchou.
  • This band is the greatest line up I have seen in a long time, why can this recording not be bought anywhere? I first saw this on t.v. in the eighties and it still gives me a thrill!

  • @pigletized: Mothra believes BonitaVerde loves her parents very much, as clearly do you. She thinks the song is "smooshy": well, maybe that's a good thing. Mothra would love if you two met in the middle and maybe we could all dance to this gorgeous chune by one of our inarguably greatest artists. kiss kiss

  • Very nice number - as soon as the squeeze box comes in it makes me think of ice cream - not sure why - knickerbocker glories in Guadalajara... and the trombone reminds me of pie and peas in Brighouse. The magic of popular music knows no bounds.

  • It's not a saxophone. It is a big trumpet!

  • @sumljivi It's a trombone!

  • Love it!

  • Thank you for share!!! Amazing!!!!

  • #ry

  • Ry Cooder is a genius. He brought Flaco Jimenez, the Pahinui Brothers, Ali Farka Toure, the Buena Vista Social Club folks and countless others to us.

  • Love that saxophone!!

  • King of the Horse.

  • Accordian player is Flaco Jiminez. First appeared with Ry on the Chicken Skin Music album.

  • Love the guy on the accordian. Who is he

  • Bravo = Bellíssima apresentação = Excelente !

  • like he'd never heard the song before - better listen to the indios.. but in germany the original is vorbidden to watch in youtube - from sony - same like in china..

  • Cada vez que escucho esta cancion me acuerdo de Colombia, el lugar donde naci. La escuche por primera vez en la television, cuando era nina. Esta version de Ry Cooder me parece muy sentimental, tierna y me hace sonreir.

  • I was a waitress at the Catalyst during 79-81. What a place, what a time! This is beautiful. I wish I could have seen it live, but thanks to Les Blank & You Tube here it be, for all to behold.

  • Great ! Love you Ry !

  • this does not suck

  • Don't worry, AldoG, our party is intact. As always, Ry C, Flaco and the band are pure class.

  • I don't mean to upset the party but, but as far as the guitar work goes, this is a pretty ordinary interpretation by Cooder. I doubt he would want this included on the highlights reel.

  • Let us know when we can see some of your guitar work on YouTube - can't wait to compare it with Ry's !

  • When I see Ry! it reminds my of my father....After a week of hard working, sundays free with a botle of beer singing along with Ry Cooder. I love Ry!!

    Thanks

  • Love it!!!! Reminds me of my childhood in San Antonio.

  • Wonderful

  • Utterly fantastic instrumental version of this wonderful song, by 8 master musicians.

Straight into my favs...and many thanks for posting.

  • Music to make you smile from ear to ear. Class!

  • yo tambien sonhe contigo maria-elena , de eso ; more;! more!..... time ........ago!

  • Siempre sone con estar contigo Maria Elena!!!!!romantico potosino.

  • my name is maria elena. my parents named me after this smooshy song and believe it or not, they are still madly inlove at 81 and 84. It's disgusting. They just don't quit. God bless them!

  • @BonitaVerde

Wow! What a lovely story. You are very privileged to have such romantic parents who named you after such a beautiful song. Give them both a big hug and a kiss from me! Viva romance!

  • @BonitaVerde

I love this song very much, it sounds peaceful :)

  • @BonitaVerde

Aye Maria Elena, you are so blessed, may you have many more years of mad love to watch. Que Rico son.

  • @BonitaVerde This is a great song! Such talent is rare these days. How can you say something so terrible about your parents? Love like theirs is most beauttiful.

  • @pigletized that was sarcasm... like if you ever say your parents kissing... and made a little joke about it... you still know it's good they feel for each other, and know that it is good... i believe that is why she also put "God bless them!" after her little jibe at her parent's love.

  • @BonitaVerde That is a charming story Maria Elena, I would be proud to be named after such a great song....And I do hope you realise how blessed you are having both your parents still around at that age. The fact that they are still madly inlove gives us all hope.

  • @BonitaVerde - "God bless them"...indeed...reading your comment made my eyes 'sweat' (I'm 78!)

  • @BonitaVerde Good for Mom and Dad. There are few more romantic tunes than Senor Barcelata's. Plus there is Flaco.

  • @BonitaVerde God bless them, indeed...

  • @BonitaVerde Hey that's great.

Mine were married for 60 sixty years and carried on like kids.

Sadly both passed away this year

  • @lawlers69 in sorry to hear that.

god bless you and your parents

  • @lawlers69 im sorry to hear that.

god bless you and your parents

  • @BonitaVerde

My grandmother is Maria Elna, a beautiful name.

  • @BonitaVerde That's so funny so did my parents!

  • @BonitaVerde That's a blast! Good for them n you.

  • @BonitaVerde

Good for them and you, what a great example and name. I remember my grand parents in their 80"s getting up and dancing and holding hands..... after a few Rye's LOL

  • @BonitaVerde Get them to share their secret with the world, pretty green!

  • @Jigaboo123456 I don't think you want to know. @_@

  • @BonitaVerde God bless you

  • @BonitaVerde Hope yr parents are still kickin. I just celebrated my 70-10th; heard this song on a piano roll some time in 1940 and have been singing it w/ my ukulele as accompaniment.

  • I am not religious man, but hearing this I can see greatness in another dimension....so few man so gifted, so many of us made so happy by their genius

  • This tune is bringing tears to my eyes .. thanks for posting this.

  • Pure genius. Thank you, mbroders for posting this so we can be awed by amazing performance.

  • Truly amazing music can it be bought as a recording?

  • I think it is on his album, Boomers story

  • Indeed it is, and it's one of the finest Cooder albums from his early period.

  • In "The UFO has landed" (Ry's anthology 2008)

  • Thank you so much for this one by Ry Cooder....nice

  • Flaco Jimenez on accordion!! He's so happy and grinning/smiling for the love of playing Music. Chicken Skin/Goose bumps (?)

  • It flows :) wonderful, I love the accordion very much.

  • WOW ..FLACO

  • Simply Great ! And to know that this piece was written around the beginning of the previous century by the Mexican composer Lorenzo Barcelata....It is a True Evergreen !

  • It was, actually, written in 1932.

  • look at flaco,he knows a genius when he is playin with one and appreciates hs freedom to play, breathtakin and memorable.and flaco aint bin well lately.

  • GREAT!

  • no me gusto

  • Viva! Maria Elena!

    なんで、ピアノのおっちゃんは蝶ネクタイなんだ?

  • It's just because the man on the piano is Van Dyke Parks !

    ヴァン・ダイク・パークスだからだ!

  • One would be hard-pressed to think of someone who has generated so much awe from such paltry contribution as has Parks.

  • hermosa cancion ry cooder hizo bien en tocar esta cancion

    ¡VIVA MEXICO!

  • wonderful

  • Is that Flaco Jiminez on the squeezebox? This is wonderful stuff. We played the Boomer's Story version of this beautiful tune at my Father's wake. He was a huge fan of Ry Cooder, as is my entire family. The world is a better place for his presence. Thanks for the post.
