I don't really see why the players got involved in the issue at all, the umpire must know whether he'd called 'over' or not. Still good to see such sporting behaviour though - you wouldn't get that in football.

Mind you, I do remember the Kiwis running out a Sri Lankan (?) for congratulating his team mate (Sangakkara ?) on a century when the ball was pretty much dead.

@ferrari5107 I agree - all these runouts are technically out - what we are discussing is the spirit of the game. Collingwood upholding the Elliot appeal was a disgrace (and I am a pom) - in this incident, Vettori showed Collingwood what it is to be a true sportsman.
Yes, the ball was not dead in the Murali incident but I think it is pretty poor form to run someone out when he/she is (1) not attempting a run and (2) congratulating a team mate on making a century.
