on this day we were staying at a campsite on the south coast and had gone to visit friends and go to the castle at Tintagel, but beforehand we considered going to Boscastle. We didn't even know about it till a few days later on the radio.
No - the rain from this cloud was intensely localised (and geographically in the worst possible place). My Mum was driving home along the A39 between Wadebridge and Camelford that afternoon and - like most locals - saw the evil cloud and thought "Some unlucky village is really in for it" but there was no rainfall in the surrounding areas at all. No overcast or rain-heavy clouds, just this monster cloud. Its called the Brown Willy Effect (see wikipedia).
the weird thing is, polzeath is no more than 20 miles away from boscastle! i know this because i live about 5 miles away from boscastle, and i can get to polzeath in about 20 minutes easily. don't know the exact mileage, to be fair, but its probably only about 10. just goes to show how not only does cornwall have a different climate to the rest of england, but it has different climates in each town and village!
We were sitting, having lunch at the Atlantic House when that happened, thought we might have to go into the bar coz I wasnt gunna let my burger get wet! Best Cheeseburgers ever there!
i was riding shergar with my mate Lord Lucan through the streets that very day. Or was it the day before? Anyway it rained a bit, i know that........'cause me pasty got damp!
I was also on that beach that day and remember that big black cloud. What a shock we had when we got back to digs and saw the news.Even met a family in the pub who were rescued from their home!
i got stuck in the bakers in rock for about 10 minutes coz the rain was coming down so hard...lucky rock wasnt flooded as well.....i then had luch on polzeath and watched the cloud go past us...it was way darker than it appears on the film...
