Yeah, wouldn't it be nice if someone had taped the mid-to-late 1970's sign-offs of WPIX, with the inimitable Bill Biery's V/O . . . especially 'PIX's particular "SSB" film with the U.S. Army Band's version accompanying a loop of a flag flying in the breeze . . .
Must have been during a period when WPIX was off the air for "transmitter maintenance", as they were completely 24-7-365 by then (and had been for several years).
I remember those times . . . after that explanation, they would play the prerecorded sign-on as voiced then by Bill Biery (who, sadly, died in '87, though his sign-on would be heard for a few more years afterward on Ch. 11). More specifically, I was witness to such a "transmitter maintenance" sign-off one overnight in 1984.
I'd say possibly '86 but I seem to think it was from '87. It was not uncommon for some stations to use both types, the same year, or even the same night. WBZ and WSBK surely did...
I see what you mean . . . back when KQWC in Davenport, IA was still WOC-TV, in the 1980's, they used both the standard EIA color bars and the "old-fashioned" Indian head-design test pattern (only with the calls, city and channel in place of the Indian head). Perhaps, so did WNBC-TV as of '87 . . .
Bars and Tones was one of the most well known shows ever. My favorite episode was the Magenta Bar Incident. ;-)

I presume the older "circular" color test pattern of WPIX's was from 1986? (Just curious . . . )
