@202699e My friend look at the history of that instrument and you will se that its call Cuatro cuz in the beginings of that instrument it use to have 4 double strings. But it had an evolution to five and they decide to not chanche the name because of the history. The guitar has only 6 strings, and if you put it double strings is a 12 string guitar but its still call guitar dosent it. Brasilian guitar has 7 string and its call Violao man but stil call guitar.

@202699e First, I'm not Boricua, I'm Cuban. Second, it's called a "cuatro" because it had 4 strings originally. It then evolved to 8 strings and finally to 10 strings like the one shown here. Third, the point is that it is difficult to articulate an instrument that is so short with double strings on it and this one is being played so well by an old guy. Finally, I'm glad you like the Tres Cubano. I take the Cuatro Boricua over it any day of the week.

Quick reference notes for those who don't know what's happening here:

1. The player is 76 y/o and still going strong

2. The instrument, called a "Cuatro" has 4 sets of 2 strings each. If you've ever tried to play lead on a 12 string guitar, you know how hard that can be.

3. As already noted, it's strung right handed and played by a lefty (a la Jimmy Hendrix)

4. Once again, all that talent comes from the tiny, 90 x 30 mile island of Puerto Rico. Simply amazing.

i just noticed he plays a right handed cuatro upside down. He must have learned this way, i guess when he learned as a kid he didn't have his own and practiced on other peoples instruments who were right handed. Interesting.
