I'm gonna start watching all your vids. Not just becasue it has to do with whisky...but it's also a history lesson as well. I love it. thanks so much!
Look up Fastival Express 1970, a bunch of artists (Janis, grateful dead, buddy guy etc.) 6 days on a train across Canada, 3rd day; nothing left in the bar cart so… they raided a liquor store in Saskatoon were they bought a display bottle of Canadian Club… needless to say it was gone in one night.
Anyway keep these reviews coming, they are exceptionally good.
My father has 3 bottle's of Canadian Club whiskey from 1962, 1964 & 1972, and 2 bottle's of Crown Royal from 1968, and 4 bottle's of Seagram's V.O. 1972, I'd tried to get him to crack open at least one of the bottles, but he insists that he's saving them for a special occasion.
@ralfystuff I Definitely agree with you Ralfy, I got my parents a 25 y.o. Ben Nevis for their 25th wedding anniversary after seeing your great review, but I'm hoping my father crack open one of these 50 year old bottles to celebrate in October.
Having a dram of Canadian Club right now. Mmmmm...
Not as good as some other whiskies I've had, but a good solid blended. In fact, I'd say that the Canadians (and Irish) make FAR superior blended whiskey to the Scots. I'd definitely take Canadian Club over Chivas Regal or Johnnie Walker Black.
I absolutely love your whisky series. Keep them coming Ralfy! Thank you so very much for opening the horizon of almost endless possibilites ranking from smell, taste and other senses when it comes to the brilliant art of whisky!
i bought this. the label is different looking in australia. its not bad, light on flavour though. i prefer bourbons like makers mark. still nice, and you can drink it straight if you like and it tastes good
@Cadmium77 "Rye" is ofen associatd with "Canadian" whiskey but unfortunately that assesment is wrong. Most Canadian whiskeys are blends. If you don't like "Rye" i'm assuming you mean Canadian Whiskey. I suggest trying: "Forty Creek" (Any kind but especially Conferderate Oak) and I also suggest, if you can find any it's been discontinued to try: "Century Reserve lot 1525" (The 15yo not the 21yo. The 21 almost tastes watered down.) "Glen Breton 10yo" is also very nice! Cheers!!
I decided to give it a shot, and I have to agree with you. For the price, it really does stand up well. I do enjoy trying it along with you in these videos, your reviews and histories are invaluable.
With all due respect Ralfy, Jack Daniels' is a Tennessee whiskey, not a bourbon. It does share every step of its production with bourbon except one, Jack Daniels' is charcoal filtered for smoothness. Bourbon cannot have this step as per US law. (27 C.F.R. 5.22) Again nothing but respect.
.... and thank you for that minding, ... and I hold both hands up to my error here. It's good to receive comments like yours as it reminds me to stay sharp when recording !!!
Another thing worth mentioning about Jack Daniels: the charcoal they use is sugar maple - it not only smooths the whiskey, but, since it contains some residual sugars, it adds some sweetness.
Whats changed with the lighting, I thought you repainted since you came back from canada but I noticed the lighting is just different from the old videos.
How did you get these whisky's through the airport security? You must know that in the UK one CANNOT take much liquid ATALL through security these days. 100ml bottles of lotions and potions each (max) all put in a clear bag for inspection. You can however buy as much as you like on the otgher side and take it onto the plain (duty free? shops).
SSo how di doyou get these precious , loverly little gems all the way back to Glasgow?
Thank You Ralfy for your outstanding reviews. I have actually bought some whiskies you have recommended.. Very good purchases! Thanks for your hard work, we apreciate your willingness to share your wisdom on this excellent subject. :)
I used to feel that way about CC as well. I changed my tune somewhat after encountering CC variants other then the standard cheap 3 star. 12 Year CC for example is quite nice for $26.
i wish this was my job... getting hammered!

I just found an old C.C. just like the one you have there, but i don't know the age of it. Is there any easy way to tell?

@kevfromMA
best chance is e-mailing CC direct. It will probably be fairly young if it is a standard bottle.

for some, the 'special occasion' ends up being their funeral wake ! .... so crack open these bottles while the sun shines !

Canadian Club is likely my least favourite Canadian Whisky, or at least the "classic" and "reserve" options are.

@boby2112
... from my last taste, I found it a very 'mass production/generic' flavour.
I was not that impressed !

I'm Canadian and frankly rye whiskey is god awful. It's good for mixing with Coca Cola and ice and not much else. For desperate alkies only.

I visited Vancouver in 2007 and tried Canadian Club. It is by far the best whisky I have tried from North America.

A great value is Canadian Club Classic 12 year old. It has the richness and depth lacking in the standard 6 year old.

If you don't have it, Crown Reserve is pretty nice.
Crown Royal is a bit typical. But Crown Reserve takes on a smoother yet more matured note.

... I notice that given 30 minutes in a covered glass, a delicious dry-oak nature appears and the corn-sweetness recedes.
Interesting and engaging stuff ! ... the initial sweet simplicity is becoming more complex.
ralfystuff 2 years ago
Hard to believe that this standard CC actually equals the current Macallan 10yo... o.O
Tenkterian 2 years ago
CC is a 'blend' mark - 82
Macallan a 'malt' - 82, but sure, the Macallan should have been better, ... much better than it was.
Ultimately, the CC exceeded my expectations, the Macallan did (definitely) not !
ralfystuff 2 years ago
FWIW, i also was not impressed by 10 yr macallan. it was from trader joes, but still something was not right about it.
