A person who does not wish to carry insurance is taxed 2.5% of some portion of their AGI, to cover the inevitability that they will incur some health care catastrophe and not be able to pay for it.

The US public is being hoodwinked by big corporations who care only about profits, they spend vast amounts telling you lies to protect their own pockets. They spend enourmous amounts on staff who process policies, assess claims and pay bills, which would go dirctly to healthcare if it was taken out of their hands. The US system is an inefficient way of delivering care to the people.
The US people are scared of being taxed, but in the end you would end up paying less than the insurance premium.

Maybe you are rich enough to pay for your health care, maybe you have insurance, but if you need some expensive long-term cancer treatment in the next 10 years you may find your insurance company trying to push you out the door, finding some excuse not to pay for your treatment.

Wor - Had to finish a work project. Let's do this one again. Yes, I have insurasnce. I started working when I was 14 and have earned a nice retirement - including health insurance.
However, I have family members who are in the Health Care Field, and they have indicated that no one gets turned away from their hospital if they have an emergency.

prostock, in the reading of the bill of rights it in the first nine amendments it specifically spells out and limits the scope of the feds. the tenth amendment gives the power to the states. now if a state wants to adopt say a single payer like oregon has they are within their power. i just think this issue belongs in the states,and let the people decide for themselves.

Actually the Cash for Clunkers program was a huge success -- bigger than they had anticipated. If a concert hall wanted to sell 50,000 tickets for a show and they sold out in 4 days, would you call it a failure just because it was out of tickets? The C4C program set out to help a number of people get more fuel efficient vehicles using XYZ amount of funds; the goal was simply accomplished earlier than expected.

wildwilly, thanks for your response. does the constitution have any provision for how we're to pay for the things it deems 'in the best interest of the nation'? what if (just as an example) that congress decided that in order to rescue the auto industry, every family was to receive a new car? approx cost $300B. how would we pay for that? print an additional $300B? i'm sure you realize this isn't the answer. i'm all for programs we can afford. let me repeat that. programs we can afford.

There is nothing in any of the health care bills under consideration which call for a national takeover of health care. Article I of the Constitution states Congress has the power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises and to provide for.the general welfare of the United States. The framers chose to give Congress a broad mandate to spend money in ways that promote the general welfare. Perhaps if Ms. Bachmann took the time to read the Constitution...

It does not say that. It says that new customers cannot be accepted into grandfathered plans, which may not provide acceptable coverage as defined in the act, but which are preserved to honor the promise, "If you like it, you keep it."
BTW, this has nothing to do with absence or presence of public option.

how can you say that when it is in the bill. also it means if you try to change policies you cant. if anything changes in your policy,deductible you cant. this is really a back door to a single payer, so says barney frank. obama himself on several occassions has come out in favor of single payer. so excuse me if i have my doubts.

jhamm, the main way those countries stave off bakruptcy aa long as they have is by rationing their health care services. sure, MRI's are free, but you may not get one for 188 months, in which time your tumor has grown to the point where it is inoperable. like you said, govt funded healthcare is not working in ANY COUNTRY IN WHICH IT HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED. if you have a policy when and if the option becomes law and the deductible changes or if you cancel you are forced to go option. if you choose as a individual to not have insurance you are subject to a 2.5% tax. i wonder why you trust a govt that has ruined medicare,medicaid soc.sec. going broke. are canceling the cash for clunkers because they cant run that to run the healthcare system.

No you're not. You're expected to pick up another plan that meets minimum requirements under the Act - one such plan would be the public option.

A person who does not wish to carry insurance is taxed 2.5% of some portion of their AGI, to cover the inevitability that they will incur some health care catastrophe and not be able to pay for it.
The end of private insurance as we know it? If you mean the end of the preexisting condition clause, dropped coverage for daring to make a claim and de fact content-free policies, then I guess I would have to say "Yes" - but I see that as a good thing.
