He could have done well with this one had it been professionally recorded for release. In this version he is pretty much behind the harmonies, but there are hints of what he may have done with it.
JACKIE -THANKS again for letting us post your video for our ELVIS celebration! We were just listening to it again today. Elvis also recorded a song I wrote for him called THE DYING EMBER with the kids around. This was before Dorsey Burnette recorded it. It hasn't appeared yet on any Youtube videos though Dorsey's version was up for a while. Wes Bryan
We would like to post your video on WES BRYAN-MY LIFE IN MUSIC as a tribute to Elvis Presley who I was friends with for 20 years shortly, as we are dedicating this month to Elvis for his birthday. This song reminds me of the singing at Elvis' parties - so many voices singing along with Elvis. Elvis had a home recording studio at Graceland... Don't know if I can ID where this was recorded... THANK YOU Wes Bryan
what a beautiful song!...the sweet female voice you can hear, may quite possibly be kathy westmoreland......and that unmistakeable 'deep' bass voice belongs to j.d. sumner
Beautfiul- terrific job and georgeous photos!!! I lived 500 miles from Graceland..My first trip my friends and I had worked all night in the local Cotton Mill. We drove through rain that 500 miles, for the weekend to find out Elvis wasn't home!! It was like the gates of Heaven opened up when we walked onto his driveway, thanks to Cousin Harold.. This song is SO very special to me- thanks again for posting. Keep 'em coming
Fantastic post, many thanks. This is a great example of the fact that The King always wanted to be a Baritone singer, even from a very young age, though the irony is that this man could sing Any song and interpret it in a very unique way.
Man, what a voice he he had.
Although he was indeed Blessed in many, many ways. I'll never hear a voice quite like his in my life time, of that I am sure.
I also dont think that anyone person will influence and touch the world in quite the same way.
Hedy West, Bobby Bare, and Charlie Williams are also often cited together as songwriters. I like PP&M's version, as well as The Bros 4. But, as an Elvis fan, this home recording is especially precious and poignant.
And, what's more... this goes to show that the KING always kept his innate love for music - despite all the crappy movies in which he was starring at that time.
In other words: His incredible talent didn't die or evaporate during the sixties. It just lay dormant. His ambition to become a respected Hollywood star like his idol James Dean made him forget who he truly was: the one and only KING who could sing like no other.
so beautiful listening to his great voice and the back singers, but very sad at the same time too, what an artist he was, unbelievable he had to die so early, still miss him to this day when listening to music
@ultramanyudai who is the female voice at the back, it's just so beautiful all together, did listen to it over and over again. just think that the whole group is death by now, how very sad
This is a gospel song. Elvis isn't trying to be the "star". He's just singing and it's wonderful. If I had a breakfast place, this would be the song I would chose for Sunday morning. He's just a great gospel singer.
This is a home recording of Elvis from 1966; I am not sure if he is in Hollywood or at Graceland-I have seen both credited. I do not know who the woman is, but the man is probably Charlie Hodge, as he sang harmony with Elvis on many recordings in the 1960s and 1970s, and lived at Graceland. Elvis is singing the low part. This song is available on In A Private Moment.
@Jackiej61too I believe that one of the backup singers could be Charlie Hodges but I am certain the other two is J.D. Sumnter and Kathy Westmoreland.Like you I'm not sure either where this was recorded cause Elvis was always singing and recording informally with his band no matter where they was wether in LA or home at Graceland. Whenever he and they were together there was always a good times and lots of singing going on.
This is such a very beautiful song. The first ones to ever record this song were the folk group "The Journeymen" in the very early 1960's. "The Journeymen" had a major hit with this song. I'm so very glad that there's a recording of Elvis singing it. I've owned this Elvis home recorded performance on CD since 2000. I've always liked Elvis' home recorded performance of it a whole lot. This video was absolutely perfect in every way, 10 Stars as always Jackie.
He could have done well with this one had it been professionally recorded for release. In this version he is pretty much behind the harmonies, but there are hints of what he may have done with it.

The deep voice that sometimes comes to the fore sounds like Johnny Cash. He sometimes sounded as if he had a cold.

"500 Miles" is generally credited to folk singer Hedy West who adapted the song from an old folk song.
I never heard this version before. It's great!
The Bobby Bare song "500 Miles From Home" was written by Bare and only he knows whether it was based on this song. He said it wasn't.

Elvis was indeed blessed in many ways - his peerless voice being just one of them !
Shows his range nicely here, as he's singing Tenor I think (someone more knowing in these things will correct me if im wrong i'
feel certain of that !).
Quality.
