I am from Exeter and I do not have a Devonshire accent. My accent is not regionally specific, it is quite a generic English accent.
My parents do not speak with a Devonshire accent but my brother does. He grew up in the same house as me. My grandparents had strong accents, my Dad doesn't but his brother does.
Your accent is not usually influenced by your family but by the people you listen to most - be they friends, colleagues, people at school or even on television and radio etc
You talk like a fake posh bird, ofcourse there is a Devon accent, you talk in the generic students accent, the same as they do here in Bristol and the nation all over.It is fake wankers that are ashamed of their own accent with aspirations of middle class. If you are posher talking than your parents then it is fake. You are part of the reason that all local accents are dying out.
You need to meet my grand parents, they have true devonshire accents and it is sometimes hard to understand them. Your accent is nothing like the true Devon accent at all. I find it offensive that you are trying to tell people that we do not have true, harsh accents, because we do!
@ArwenPendragon Yes, but surely you have a Devonshire accent rather than a Devon accent? I don't know. I live in Plymouth and some of the accents you hear are awful. heehee. Really some people DO sound rather like a pirate!
Im from Okehampton, yeh im a farmer, but devonshire accents doesnt mean its an farmers accent, to be honest, devonshire farmers have less of an actual devonshire accent then devonshire people living in say exeter! .
you been watching too much tele methinks... you talk, like, like, like, like, like, like... south westerners have a lovely rolling R... best in England...
People mesh the Bristolian accent with the various South West accents, it forms an ugly mix that I've never heard any real people speak. I think it's called Mummerset.
Maybe it's because I'm American, but I love a more "country" sounding English accent. I don't mind the London accent, but to me it's so proper that it's almost like it has less personality. As for the being called a farmer, it's the same thing here in the US if you're from the south. Don't be annoyed, embrace having a "thick" accent, even if others think it's quirky. I think it's beautiful!
@Redden08 If you are saying a London accent sounds proper, I put it to you that you have never heard a London accent. You are possibly referring to the accent known as RP
(Received Pronunciation). These are fairly standard Londonaccents: youtube.com/watch?v=Zbku1li9Ark
I'm from Devon also, I was born in Plymouth. xD Its true the accents they are teaching people are awful, sadly I picked up my parents accent, so I sound like I'm from Nottingham. xD Alas, I do still understand "heavy Devonshire" accents.
we dont sound like farmers! i have the same accent as this girl and so does everyone i know from all around devon, bristol accent is the one that sounds like pirates!
Babe, I'm from Plymouth, everyone has an accent. Saying we sound like Pirates or Farmers is a stereotype. The majority of people really really do sound like farmers, and saying that we say stuff like 'wa-er' etc, just proves the accent. It also depends on who you hang around, not everyone has a strong accent. A stereotypical Devonshire accent, originating from yonks ago, is pretty much a farmer.
To be honest, you wouldn't know if you sounded like a farmer or not because, you are so use to hearing the accent, like you probably wouldn't take any notice of the english accent unless they were talking to someone with an american accent. And you do pronounce your t's. I live in somerset and quite frankly I love my accent when it comes through.
@Standintherain94 im from plymouth, and i hear my accent on myself all the time, i hate it, janner is the worst! but i still think that people make it out to be worse then it is
finally somebody who has sense. i live in frome which is in the supposed county of excessive spelling mistakes (somerset). people at school talk like you. we dont talk like farmers and sound thick. people in my family like the fake accent but it is one of my biggest peaves. it sounds quite uneducated as well. although ok some people still have the strong accent but they are a minority.
I disagree with you about Devonians having a silent "T" this is just a lazy way of speaking that most young people all over england use, probably from watching too much T.V. Traditionally in Devon "T's" are pronounced as "D's" e.g. "butter" would be "Budder" and Peter would be "Peder", what do you think yazoo8222?
HI. Fuck! I have to move to Plymouth... Cos house prices are soprohibitingly high here in London and the South East... Honestly. you sound like us! Thank God for that! I'm really worried about starting to speak like a tard after I've moved there... (Or being surrounded by people who speak like that!) Btw, woah! You're cute! So, basically, in Devon, people don't actually speak retarded (or like 'farmers') and the girls are cute ? That's ok then!
Yh, Im from Somerset and I talk like you. My friend from Kent thinks I have a wierd accent, and she says its like a farmer, but it isnt. I suppose only farmers sound like farmers, and pirates sound like pirates!! :P
@yazoo8222 devon has a proud celtic past....its dialect version of old welsh was spoken until 1500s in western devon
