Drew Carey should live in "Cleveland rocks" not LA. Also 16 miles from his job, move closer dude. If I was to invest in a private freeway, I would be very nervous about recouping my investment....I mean $550 bucks extra a month for tolls, I don't know how many people would knowingly pay that....thats way more than even a car payment+insurance.
IN BOSTON (I-93 Braintree to Chinatown exit) We have the 'extra lane' for free! It keeps flowing (even tho it's free) because you can't get off any other exits in between, so it's kinda like an express lane to Boston. So yeah it's just like the video, on one side there's bumper-bumper traffic, on the other, cars are passing right thru.
What if the government said okay company, we want you to design a subway system which gets the most people around quickly. You have this amount of money to build it, if the expenses are under you get to keep the money, if theyre higher, you have to pay for it yourself. And then of course lease the operations to private companies. Because roads are a finite resource, although, if all highways had fares like subways, I bet masstransit would look much better. Things to consider
I am ALL about free marketm but what Los Angeles needs is more high speed trains, expanded subway/metro system, an extensive network of commuter trains. Of course it's "socialism" but it will pay for itself, because people, like myself prefer this sort of transportation over driving, insurance, car payment, parking charges, tickets and lost time.
@RodrigueMoore Well, then we should let a private company do it. If it will pay for itself, then it's a good investment to make and someone will try it. That is, unless it's against Da Rulez, which I imagine it probably is.
the govt. should just fix the roads as opposed to having private companies basically gouge people for the right to not be screwed over on the road. If everyone used the toll roads then they'd be almost as bad as the regular roads. I'm usually a fan of Drew Carey's libertarian videos but holy crap this is just drawing a blatant line between rich and poor.
@guitarplayer4life666 You just said it, the federal government needs to leave us alone. The states need to have more say in laws than having the federal government running the show. This was the intent of the Constitution and our founding fathers.
But, but, but Drew. If traffic congestion gets solved by private initiate (aka market forces), whatever are the useless utopian schemers -- the politicians and bureaucrats -- going to do?
They did, it got dismantled in the 1950s and 60s to make way for cars... Of course, the freeway system only got half way to completion when the oil crisis hit, so they stopped building freeways to focus on public transportation -- except they did neither.
That would cost money, and building anything in America is time consuming and cost ineffective process.
There's Metro, but remember - this country ain't like Japan, where if you get off public transportation, you're reasonably close to home. Here when you get off, someone has to pick you up, and you're probably back on the freeway. Or you take the bus again.
Besides, I think Angelenos will tire of the hectic subway scene. We already pay 4 bucks for coffee, just build more private lanes.
Maybe the reason only the wealthy can afford the express lane is because the scarcity of the privately run roads creates high prices. If there were more private roads to compete with this one, lower prices and better quality would soon follow. And don't forget about ad revenue. This road could be profitable by selling ad space and even selling the naming rights to the road. The highest traveled roads would command the highest ad prices, making the consumer pay almost nothing.
Privatizing roads relieves the tax payer. Private highways are more efficient, and accidents are attended to faster. The upkeep is better. You pay a toll for each use instead of paying MORE via taxes for unlimited use. It also encourages people to bike to work.
Usage does NOT increase. If you build more roads, thousands more cars aren't going to appear out of no where. A lot of pollution comes from cars starting and stopping, and idling in traffic.
once everyone uses the express lane - it's not so express anymore. land mass is land mass, square mileage is square mileage, and populations keep growing - do the math. what drew carey is advocating isn't a solution to traffic problems - it's a tier system where the people with money get privilged use of roads. think of it as first class in air flight - it's great if you can afford it, but you can't. THAT'S WHY IT'S FIRST CLASS!!
No, there would be an incredible incentive to build accomodations for such traffic - there simply isn't as long as the government holds a monopoly on roads, because funding for roads (which benefit everybody) competes for social welfare and other wasteful spending.
That's cause you're slow.. ;) I have a 53 schwinn. Ok, my generalization doesn't cut it.. Give me an hour and I'll be there... I bet one way is downhill too..
I have TO say.. THANK YOU DREW CAREY for all these videos. I heard your doing 20 more.. One every 2 weeks or so. THANK YOU !!!! I SEEN YOU ON THE NEWS IN SAN DIEGO !!!!!
Drew is only supporting the very core of our freedom - the economic, it is what the founders had most in mind, a limited govt that only protected our rights instead of directing us and robbing us blind in the process, while fattening their own unproductive and destructive war-profiteering asses. Markets level, govt is non-uniform favoritism at best.

Just sounds like the federal government is in to much involvment. Let the state government deal with it or let the people drive motorcycles.

L.A. should have built an extensive public rail transport years ago. This is what happens when you depend on cars too much.

LA is too sparsly populated for the public rail system to be affective or even profitable

The government isn't entitled to the roads.
