  • onkel! <3

  • copy&paste ---> google translator, stop with the swearing and be nice. What we're mainly saying is that this shit beats the living fuck outta faggish breakdancing fo'sho, cuz it has existed for over one thousand years.

  • Uf da! Let's not get all bent out of shape. The video should be in English subtitles so our Irish, English, Scottish, Canadian, and Australian freinds can enjoy it too. Besides Americans.

  • Things like this should be preserved and strongly defended by every nation.

A hundred colourful nations. Not one, colourless mass.

  • I can't read what you squareheads are writing.

  • @BILLBKLYN then learn Norwegian. Not everyone has to speak English, you squarehead.

    Debil.

  • @Mumrikken7 Uh yeah, a Squarehead is someone from Norway, not from America. Also since this is an American site at least put it in English so everyone else can read.

  • @BILLBKLYN Uh yeah, a squarehead can be whoever i call a squarehead. Also since this is a Norwegian video about a Norwegian dance and Norwegian tradition, you could at least show respect for it. 'everyone else' does not mean 'american', you know? :) LEARN ANOTHER LANGUAGE, then argue.

  • Det ser tungt ut!

  • It is a little known fact that the Hallingdans is the ancestral form of both breakdancing and moshpits. :-)

  • Kjempebra! Heia Norge!

  • 4 people can't dance. Haha

  • OMG! *__* You're my hero! Compliments!!

  • I wonder if I can get my norwegian BF to do this for me..... XD

  • Good balance, masculine presentation, superb!

  • Come to think of it, this is perhaps the closest we get to Norwegian martial arts! :p :D

*badam psj*

  • @R3dF0X Så utrolig morsom du er.. -_-

  • @2gzctr3 På steinerskolen er det folkedans

  • The real jumpstyle!

  • @12RemusLupin12 Men du skriver bedre svensk? :P Jeg forstår ikke helt hva du skriver XD

  • @Vikingskog jaaa... kan være. :)

  • roos want to marry you

  • Well... if you say so. I don't like getting dizzy, but if I can overcome that I would. :P

  • Well that's silly. :) This is way better than that horrible rap thing. hehe :) :D

  • OH! I really like it! tehe :D My name's Christopher and I'm from Puerto Rico. I was wondering if to learn how to dance like that really takes a lot of time. Though, it doesn't really matter, but... how do you deal without getting dizzy? tehe And the kicking was kinda funny, too. tehe :)))))

  • doesn't look that hard, thinking of presenting this dance on a cultural evening at the college I'm at =P

  • The unique things for Halling I suppose you would have to practice for yourself by watching youtube or actually taking a trip to Norway.

Since your in Puerto rico, I guess you could start with practicing Capoeria, that way you could learn most of the tricks, the kicking and the dizzyness from circular movement would go away ;D

Looks like "jota aragonesa", and basque folk

  • This is amazing! I would love to dance this!

  • Kjempe fint :0)

  • Can anybody indicate me any book (of demoanthropological "substance") about this dance? I'm an italian anthropology undergraduate and I'd really like to know more about Hallingdans(perhaps in the offing of an exhaustive research about it). Thanky you for reading -and sorry for my english-

  • naneo, I am an Italian ethnomusicology scholar interested in Nordic culture: I would be very interested in this, too!

  • Are you just trying to find information about the dance i.e technique ++, or are you looking for historical information? i.e it origin, and cultural background?

  • Vakkert.

  • Det er vanskelig, derfor gjør man det.

  • Man gjorde det for å imponere tjenane ;)

  • Det ser kult ut, +at jo høyere du sparker, jo mere attraktiv er du :P

  • This is really good!! Who is the dancer? Is he a professional hallingdanser?

  • The dancer is Sigbjørn Rua. He has been Norwegian national champion in this dance a number of times. He was one of the dancers dancing with Alexander Ryback in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest.

  • And I suppose the recent Eurovision competition has given the world a glimpse of the Hallindans so it will become more popular.

  • Don't think it was Eurovision - this dance was also put in Age of Conan :)

  • I from Russia and me seem style of dance is similar to Russian national dancings. Look dance of sailors "apple", in the basis it is pure folk, become by dance of seamen.

  • seamen :p

  • This dance is from before the vikings... So it is the Vikings that left the dance in some countries...

Sorry for my bad english... x3

  • Hvor I Norge lærer man dette? Valdres?

  • Ok, takk for informasjonen ;)

  • For those who don't read Norwegian: The guy dancing is Sigbjørn (not Sigmund) Rua from Jondalen (Numedal, Buskerud) Norway -- not far from Kongsberg. He dances with a group called Småjondolene. He is also a member of the FRIKAR dance company and was one of the backing dancers with Alexander Rybak in Norway's Melodi Grand Prix and, later, the Eurovision song contest. He is a "Class A" (Master class) dancer in Norway. He won 2nd place in the 2009 Norwegian national halling (laus) competition.

  • Sigbjørn*

  • Haha :D We had halling at school yesterday :D its extreamly fun hehe...its really great when u kick the cap haha...

  • Kick the hat :D

  • Damn...

  • That thing was like 10 feet in the air and you kicked it down with your FOOT. GOD.

  • The record is 2.53, i think, dont remember totaly, but the highest i have spectated was 2.30 in an contest :D

  • centi metres offc :P

  • Greetings from Hungary!

Speaking of promoting national culture:D: we also have this type of acrobatic man-solo in our folkdance. If you're interested, search for "kalotaszegi verbunk", "kalotaszegi legenyes" or "kalotaszegi táncok". Enjoy:)

  • Looks like a geat plyometric workout! Thanks, Vikingskog, for this and the other excellent videos you put up. Could you perhaps comment on the dance for the un-enlightened mainland European? I'd be interested in e.g. which time it dates from, which importance it had in the past and has in the present (taught in schools? Danced at weddings?), etc.

  • Hallingdans is pretty old, its atleast 400years old and pretty much havent changed anything during that time. The dance is also called 'Laus' (which meanse 'loose'(to dance alone)).

There are sources of that people have danced Laus here atleast since late viking-age/early middleage, one can say that hallingdans the 'Laus'dance they danced later turned into what we now know as hallingdans.

We'r not sure what the early types of 'Laus' looked like, but it was probably somewhat the same as this.

  • the main thing about the dance was that young men danced it, usually to show how good/athletic they were etc. and impress people/girls.

It was often danced before weddings but also at other events and sometimes just for fun.

the famouse type of hallingdans is only danced by men(Laus). As far as i remember there is also a pair-hallingdans where women can dance too but ive never seen it. And i guess its rather boring to look at compared to the regular hallingdans(laus).

  • I dont dance it myself yet by the way, but im planning on learning the basics in some years once im done at school. :)

  • ah forgot to add, its always danced with a person playing fiddle for the rythem etc.

The dance have become more and more popular recently, and its teached at many culture-schools, though not all over Norway, the traditions of it is strongest in the mountain/valley-towns in mid-south Norway.

  • Thanks for the info. I think it's always worthwhile promoting one's national traditions, and we indeed got a fascinating cultural heritage in Europe. I've been to Scotland lately, which made me aware of that even more. I definitely have to go to Scandinavia again...

So you're still at school? I'd say, if there's anything you should do afterwards besides learning hallingdans, it's studying Scandinavian literature and culture, but I take it you have your heart set on that already.

  • Please don't say it's "always danced with a person playing fiddle", because that's a lie ^^. I dance halling myself, and I often use a CD or just my iPod :P

  • Traditionally its danced with a fiddle player.

Some new people now might dance it with iPod music etc. yea.

  • Actually, it could also be danced to a jaw's harp, "torader" (when that came), plaing singing (tralling) or any other form of rythm instrument, it's just that the fiddle is most widely used the last 100 years :P

  • Lol, Han på ipoden din spiller vel fele? :P

Eller torader, trekkspil, munharpe, langeleik etc... ;P

  • We are gona have a schoolproject on this. How can you do that? omg liksom. This is amacing, its just like a sport and it is very difficult.

  • This danse is like a sport . (5*)

  • haha, how did u get that guy to agree to let u record him?
