Honestly I wasn't even remotely frightened during Vampire Bloodlines though. Thief was scary because you're just a normal dude with a stick and a dagger to protect yourself. I wasn't really afraid of the ghosts or even startled at that sudden appearance because I was a badass insane totally psychotic vampire that could tear things apart with his bare claws...

I'm going to be honest here and I know I may get hateful comments about this but - I thought the VTMB mansion wasn't that scary! It was mostly predictable if you're a horror fan of any kind. It had its moments don't get me wrong, but it wasn't the scariest thing Ive played.

@negativespace261 You're right, it wasn't the scariest thing in the world, but they did it well enough that it made you kind of freak out, even though you're playing as a freaking vampire! It also is an RPG, so most people weren't expecting a thriller quest like that, they were expecting things to attack and exp to gain. THAT'S what made it scary and memorable... at least IMO.

As a fan of both deadly shadows and bloodlines, I have to say, I agree entirely (though I haven't played most of the other games on the list). The cradle was so bad that, the first time I played the game, I didn't want to go back and finish after I'd stopped partway through. And I was 20. (That said, playing well made terror sequences while drunk and half asleep at 4am tends to be exceedingly terrifying.)

@conscript900 Eh, not so much. Pop out monsters get tiresome after a while, and that's most of what Dead Space does. Fun to dismember stuff, but not terrifying.

The Cradle gets really intense. "House with bad dreams," while somewhat melodramatic, is a very apt description of the place. By the end of the mission, I was saving every 5 minutes because I wasn't sure whether the little girl voice was a good ghost, or if it was trying to convince me to commit suicide.

I just finished thief:deadly shadows, and he actually shows the least scary part of that level. When you're trying to sneak around the cenobite lookalikes who are the only enemies in the game who can sneak up on you virtually without a sound, THAT's the scary part.

Also, I didn't find amnesia that scary. It was at first, but eventually you find out that most of the random sounds amount to nothing and you always get the sound cue when an enemy is nearby. They can't really sneak up on you.

I got Vampire bloodlines just for the hotel part...it was amazing. It was scary as nothing really was attacking you but the ambience and noise you hear, not to mention the images that can appear from nowhere sometimes, really made me sit on the edge of my seat.
