This causeway has been there since before I was born seven decades ago (this concrete one is much more modern than the wooden ones I used to cross on many years ago. It roughly parallels the old US 11 bridge and The I-10 twin spans.
FYI, the track was picked up and dumped into the lake by the surge from Hurricane Katrina. N-S repaired it very shortly thereafter.
The partial destruction of the I-10 spans and what happened to this one essentially cut New Orleans off.
at dixiedragon thats what i was told sumwhere between 24 and 27 but i think thats in the middle where the highway is i guess the train goes across a smaller part
I was on this a few years ago. I thought the bridge would be higher but much to my surprise...then on the way back it was night and windy and I could see white caps right outside my window!!
Reminiscent of the Florida East Coast through the Keys?

I always thought it was 27ish miles across Pontchartrain - is the passenger bridge 27 and the rail bridge shorter?
