I wish I could like melodic metal. Most of it I just can't stand--particularly the choruses that all sound the same: They invariably revolve around doing a major 3rd power chord movement, and I hear it OVER AND OVER again, including in this song (C# to A). It's so trite it makes me wanna vomit. I wish LaBrie had stayed away from this style.
We need a cure for cancer. The companies don't really show us actual ways that exist to cure and prevent it(and yes it's valid information). I wonder why.
@andyrockevo You're saying LaBrie was only good with Winter Rose. He sounds fantastic on this album, so you're wrong. Or at least, I think that's what you were implying that that jumble of words.
Although I agree that the cooperation between the parts here is phenomenal, I still prefer the complexity Dream Theater to this. There's a lot more to dissect, which is half the fun of listening imo. Despite that, this really does show James's strength.
@ermelynda93 no, I was meant to reply to the comment below but i forgot to click the reply button. He said he hates portnoys voice. I am fucking aware this is james labrie. sheesh
@zenriffer Good thing DT didn't break up and are just in need of a drummer :P Unless you've heard something I haven't. Then I retract my smartass remark haha.
@zenriffer WTF? DT haven't broke up, they've got a new drummer but can't announce it till this month sometime when the contract is finalised, they're also gonna start a new album and have been booked for festivals in the summer this year. How the hell is that, in any way, broken up?!
This is actually way more musical than DT. The fct is, none can write better for the voice than its owner. Vocal lines on DT most of the time just don't suit his voice - & he's got a really nice one- because they're written by others, with an instrumental (maybe guitar like) approach rather than a vocal approach. That's why some DT stuff seem to lack feeling, it's because of melody. And belive me, no one has a greater melodic sense than the singer, that's simply his role!
Gotta say this song blew my mind! James found a way to take Dream Theater to a new level. I love that he is still able to keep the music fresh with new ideas! Keep rocking!
Wow...this just kicked every scoffer who says James can't sing heavily right in the teeth, in my opinion. Ever since Octavarium I have been pleased with the way his voice has started sounding again (due to the unfortunate vocal cord accident), and this just shows that his voice is far from done. Very impressive track. I love what he and DT both are doing.
@Yakushii I agree. I'm anxious for Dream Theater's new album, because with Mike gone, I get to hear more of James, and less of Mike. Mike's voice pisses me off quite a bit, and he only sings so much 'cause he doesn't think James has a heavy enough voice. With the quality of James' voice on this album, and the Eden's Curse song "No Holy Man," I think James will really shine on the new album. Makes me very anxious :)
@Xallia621 Yeah, I just hope JP doesn't adopt Mike's obnoxious attitude. As a guitarist, I never really noticed James that much before. Now I'm glad I did, because Static Impulse shows that James is an amazing singer, and Sfogli does a better job than JP when it comes to cooperating with James.
@Yakushii I don't think John will adopt Mike's attitude. John's always seemed rather humble despite his time in the spotlight, I guess you could say. Not only Sfogli, but the entire band works better with James than Dream Theater does, due in entirety to it being shaped around his image. Dream Theater has that style that's like, "Make your vocals fit with the music, 'cause the music isn't changing." And James' solo stuff is more of the music working with the vocals, and he sounds better with it.
@Xallia621 i agree. I think they need to focus on having james's voice fit. I'm hoping Mangini helps bring them back to a more proggy direction, where his voice fits well (six degrees had a good sound i thought) but I doubt it, especially since mike has some fastest drummer record and used to play in annihilator
I really dont get you people, Yeah DT are pushing for a heavier sound these days, and I do wish they'd play like they used to. But saying James can't handle the heavier stuff is retarded, are you not listening to this video? Because it sure sounds like it suits him just fine!
@hanfsud your such an idiot....Bullet for my Valentine sucks ass and sounds nothing like this; they're a poser scremo band....this is a side project from Dream Theater; that any day kills any other band out there.
james labrie have a lot of talent and this album is freaking awsome from first to last track but DT is DT you cant compare at all . And sure Mike is the heart of the band BUT without Pettrucci ... and anyway every member are probably the bests in their discipline . So hail DT and I just hope that this solo experience will give a new breath to the band . I'd like to hear something new from Pettrucci also AND a solo album from Myung, 3 to 5 years solo and the band comes back together .
@y6o6g6i DT will be releasing albums, probably 2 without Portnoy all together. The upcoming one will be released in aug/sept next year, mark my words.
Why all the bashing on Mike. He left the band because he wasn't really enjoying it anymore, needed a break, and felt extremely uninspired, the other guys said they'd just go without him vs taking a break. I agree Portnoy was going for the metal thing but seeing how both Systematic Chaos and Black Clouds have more writing credit to Petrucci it would seem that he wanted the harder sound. I don't think it was all Portnoy's doing and I think his leaving is the worst thing to happen since Falling.
@VitaiLampada Which in turn made Portnoy leave. He's no longer a member of Dream Theater therefore he left. He wanted a break the others said no and they'd do it without him so Portnoy decided it would just be best if he left.
Portnoy hit midlife crisis. Clearly enjoys touring with medicore, younger bands like Avenged Sevenfold. It's good that he left, it'll allow for all the members ideas to shine, as he was clearly opressing all of theirs before. Don't get me wrong, he wrote some good songs and was an amazing drummer, but I think this might be just what DT needed.
@MetalMaple Everyone in the band agreed the rules for lyrics should be actual lyrics vs what Myung wrote, the band left all the other work to Portnoy because he was more organized. And just cause someone enjoys touring with a band who's drummer passed not to mention looked up to Portnoy isn't a bad thing. Plus if these ideas on LaBrie's new album (something the other members are excited for) prove anything it's that DT and LaBrie prefer mainstream metal cause that's all this is.
If the rest of the album is anywhere near this, It's definetely a contender for album of the year. I absolutely love this. Brutal, Inspiring and Labrie KILLS on these songs. The contrasts of nu-metal screams, brutal music and Labrie's extraordinar melodies makes up for a five star performance. At least that's what I think.
in his solo projects James is "the creative mind" in DT is just a part of it, so, this sounds awesome, now without Mike I hope the rest of the guys give more of themselves
James LaBrie should leave Dream Theater and make this his full time band, his voice has ALWAYS sounded 10 times better on his solo albums. That, and Marco Sfogli is a badamon.
Wow! I love "Elements Of Persuasion" to no end (listen to it constantly), but this is MIND-BLOWING! I love the mix of the clean vocals and the death metal screaming. This is some seriously heavy-ass shit.
Man, this song sounds great! I'm am really looking forward to this upcoming album. I hope, that with Mike leaving DT (although I am simultaneously sad), DT will allow more input from James and the other band members. DT is my favorite band, but lately, their songs are not as inspired or fresh. This song proves, that there are still ideas to be had and they must incorporate them into their next album. I'm definitely buying this!
The other vocalist doesn't do it for me... I loved Elements of Persuasion and love Labrie's singing on his solos more than in DT, so it's a shame to have thrown that nu-metal-sounding guy in. Also, the music is stellar.
I wish DT did used James's voice like this instead of trying to sound like modern hard metal bands and throwing his voice away. This melodic alternative metal style would be way better for him. Honestly, sometimes I've been wishing for James to leave but now I see the problem is not Labrie, its their musical direction.
@chrishynes01 But it looks like Portnoy himself left because he wasn't having much fun. As much as I like Petrucci, I suspect he's the one causing this but I hope I'm wrong.
@darfunkelidas DT definitely needs a new direction (or perhaps a reverting to their old direction...I'd love to hear the Images and Words style again), but LaBrie really can't cut it anymore. Live he ranges from passable to atrocious.
If Portnoy wanted to go mainstream he would play easier music. Portnoy has always cared about the music first and nothing else. You can hear that on every album he has ever been apart of. Also, DT has been gaining more and more fans, so if he wanted to be popular he probably should have stayed. BCSL debuted at No 6 on the billboards and their next album would've done even better. He left because he needed a break. Btw, Labrie's new band sounds much more mainstream than DT ever did.
@XXblacktoothgrinXX Thank you someone is finally talking sense here. Everyone keeps saying that Portnoy was leading the band into a mainstream metal direction and that LaBrie's new CD proves there's still originality left but if anything this just sounds like Killswitch had LaBrie as a guest vocalist. If this is any indication of where DT is heading then my favorite band is now dead.
I guess some people just don't understand music. Mark my words DT WILL struggle with out Mike. He is the heart of DT and handled everything from the set list, media, producing, the fans, and oh yeah DRUMMING!! Mike has always been so good to the fans, I just can't believe how so many have just turned their backs on him. Mike has always made all of us feel like we were in the recording studio or backstage with him, have some respect and support his decisions. Nice to see someone support him.
@XXblacktoothgrinXX Without Portnoy DT wouldn't have been who they were. Apparently the guys are trying to do what Portnoy did but it just seems like a bad fill in. Plus if Portnoy wanted the metal sound like everyone says he wouldn't want a break so the band can come back and be inspired again. And if he controlled everything he would have just attempted to split the band up rather than leave so the guys could still do what they want. I support Portnoy all the way.
@XXblacktoothgrinXX he's as much said he just needed to take a break. I think he'll be back in a couple of years. They seem to still be friends from the interview on the radio show eddy trunk show...I hope he'll be back
??? Because u know their ''musical direction'' better than them ? Dude the point of music and specialy DT is to be CREATIVE and not always have the big COMMERCIAL SOUND thing ! It's their own style and I think they got 100 % the right to do what they whant and what they feel ! Specialy when u are a virtuose in music and you are theses guys with such a big music background
@mistersam666 I know Scenes From A Memory sounded way more inspired than Systematic Chaos and Black Clouds... and it just suited Labrie's voice a lot better.
@DMCMaster550 I never said this doesn't sound modern. But DT's latest albums sound like they are trying to sound like a hard alternative metal band, and Labrie's voice just doesn't fit. Both styles are modern but if you're going to choose between two modern styles, this one is more melodic and it fits Labrie a lot more than the style DT has been using lately. If it were up to me they would go all the way back to playing music without wondering if it sounds "modern" enough.
@darfunkelidas But they never wondered that if they wanted their music to sound modern they wouldn't write commercially inappropriate songs. I agree I'd prefer if they let go of a lot of the heavier riffs and the writing of 16 minute long tracks about non-fatal car accidents. I think LaBrie fits the style DT uses vs this screamo stuff here. Personally LaBrie was best on Elements. I still don't get the blame on Portnoy though, Petrucci is just as guilty of the modern metal antics.
@DMCMaster550 I agree. I don't see why people keep saying it was Portnoy's fault, if anything it looks like he wasn't happy with what was going on with DT. In any case, Black Clouds felt like they were on the right track, still some modern metal parts but on the right track. Its a shame that Portnoy left. I hope that their next album is good.
@darfunkelidas Exactly. I can agree with what you said about Black Clouds, a little modern and they needed some inspiration for Petrucci's lyrics. Same here. Apparently though there's a possibility he'll come back after he's had a break.
@darfunkelidas As much as I agree with what you're saying, Dream Theater is a completely different outfit to this. It's not that I don't think it's a good idea, it's just different musicians that mold together create different sounds, and as much as I'd love to hear Dream Theater do something along the lines of this, it's ultimately up to them and where they want to go. Even though I'm sure we all have our varying opinions on music, I think it's fair to say that DT is following what they want.
@darfunkelidas I see what you're getting at, but also keep in mind that Mike probably had a lot to do with that. And now that he's gone, ( not to rip on Mike, he's one of my favorite drummers) they might be able to graciously move into more stuff like this.
@darfunkelidas I disagree, Black Clouds and Silver Linings had some of my favorite vocal parts for me. I also really enjoyed his vocal work on Octavarium.
@Deathmethod702 same, some moments from Nightmare to Remember and Count of Tuscany are my favourite vocal lines. "In peaceful sedation I lay half awake..." - gives me chills every time.
@EpsilonX Well, this is heavier than DT and I think it is much more suited to his voice. It doesn't matter what genre it is, just how well the vocal passages and the accompaniment are written. A lot of DT's stuff is written with the instruments in mind, where as this feels much more organic, and more vocal oriented, which makes sense since LaBrie co-wrote all the songs. The only thing i'd want for DT is for LaBrie to take Portnoy's place in the writing process.
@GuardianOfFate12 this is more melodic though, and stuff like constant motion i don't think is meant to be as melodic. This and the earlier stuff like images and words just felt more natural for him. I'd love for them to return to the more prog side of their sound. And for some better lyrics.
All of Dream theater's and James's solo album songs are great and unique in there own way (Im gonna cut out 'Falling into infinity' Because that isnt Dream theater xD ) Im really looking foward to his album release O_O Deffo gonna buy it :) <3
@ProjectBurncan I agree, but Falling is so far away from any other Dream Theater cd, it's as if it was done by another band, but Hell's Kitchen is very good
@XRasenX LMAO im not saying FII is shit im just saying its there worst album... im a massive DT fan... Even they hate the album... Anna Lee is amazing? ;)
@japeto1 Yes they are all individually outstanding, but true fans know it will never be the same without Mike...Still a depressing time. Still looking forward to all these great sideprojects.
@BillyJimmyBobbyTimmy , well i agree it won't be the same without mike but that's not a bad thing. Dream theater WILL make a GREAT album without him, i will miss hearing mikes playing, but i'm sure it will be just fine. I have been a fan for 15 years bro :) DT did the right thing by going on !
That's prety good, but it suffers from the same production issues the first three albums did. The only time you can really hear Matt is his part of the solo. Still; it's better than anything you're likely to hear on the radio.
nice song good job labrie.....

@JeffLamercy: Don't download it. Buy it on-line. Labrie deserves it.

Wow! I love "Elements Of Persuasion" to no end (listen to it constantly), but this is MIND-BLOWING! I love the mix of the clean vocals and the death metal screaming. This is some seriously heavy-ass shit.
sbrushfan 1 year ago
Man, this song sounds great! I'm am really looking forward to this upcoming album. I hope, that with Mike leaving DT (although I am simultaneously sad), DT will allow more input from James and the other band members. DT is my favorite band, but lately, their songs are not as inspired or fresh. This song proves, that there are still ideas to be had and they must incorporate them into their next album. I'm definitely buying this!
Proghead26 1 year ago
The other vocalist doesn't do it for me... I loved Elements of Persuasion and love Labrie's singing on his solos more than in DT, so it's a shame to have thrown that nu-metal-sounding guy in. Also, the music is stellar.

Yeees!!
Sfogli is THE man !!!
And to the Portnoy thing: Mike´s a good drummer but he pushed into strange musical direktions that´s for sure, too !
If I had a wish on this: Terry Bozzio, join Dream Theater ! :-)

Since Portnoy left, they will have to get a progressive styled drummer...like Travis Smith

@eerieinhabitants1 Portnoy is easily replaceable.

@eerieinhabitants1 No, Blake Richardson. But if that happened I think the world would implode from the combination of two overly awesome forces.

I wish DT did used James's voice like this instead of trying to sound like modern hard metal bands and throwing his voice away. This melodic alternative metal style would be way better for him. Honestly, sometimes I've been wishing for James to leave but now I see the problem is not Labrie, its their musical direction.
darfunkelidas 1 year ago 44
@darfunkelidas Portnoy is gone now, hopefully they'll switch gears and make better use of Labries talent.
chrishynes01 1 year ago
@chrishynes01 But it looks like Portnoy himself left because he wasn't having much fun. As much as I like Petrucci, I suspect he's the one causing this but I hope I'm wrong.
darfunkelidas 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas DT definitely needs a new direction (or perhaps a reverting to their old direction...I'd love to hear the Images and Words style again), but LaBrie really can't cut it anymore. Live he ranges from passable to atrocious.
breathingreflection 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas Do you know that it's not LaBrie on the grunts?
piebeforedawn 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas You have to remember that it was mainly portnoy pushing the band into the mainstream metal direction, and he's gone now
ArcaneLifeforce666 1 year ago 2
If Portnoy wanted to go mainstream he would play easier music. Portnoy has always cared about the music first and nothing else. You can hear that on every album he has ever been apart of. Also, DT has been gaining more and more fans, so if he wanted to be popular he probably should have stayed. BCSL debuted at No 6 on the billboards and their next album would've done even better. He left because he needed a break. Btw, Labrie's new band sounds much more mainstream than DT ever did.
XXblacktoothgrinXX 1 year ago
@XXblacktoothgrinXX Thank you someone is finally talking sense here. Everyone keeps saying that Portnoy was leading the band into a mainstream metal direction and that LaBrie's new CD proves there's still originality left but if anything this just sounds like Killswitch had LaBrie as a guest vocalist. If this is any indication of where DT is heading then my favorite band is now dead.
DMCMaster550 1 year ago
I guess some people just don't understand music. Mark my words DT WILL struggle with out Mike. He is the heart of DT and handled everything from the set list, media, producing, the fans, and oh yeah DRUMMING!! Mike has always been so good to the fans, I just can't believe how so many have just turned their backs on him. Mike has always made all of us feel like we were in the recording studio or backstage with him, have some respect and support his decisions. Nice to see someone support him.
XXblacktoothgrinXX 1 year ago
@XXblacktoothgrinXX Without Portnoy DT wouldn't have been who they were. Apparently the guys are trying to do what Portnoy did but it just seems like a bad fill in. Plus if Portnoy wanted the metal sound like everyone says he wouldn't want a break so the band can come back and be inspired again. And if he controlled everything he would have just attempted to split the band up rather than leave so the guys could still do what they want. I support Portnoy all the way.
DMCMaster550 1 year ago
@XXblacktoothgrinXX he's as much said he just needed to take a break. I think he'll be back in a couple of years. They seem to still be friends from the interview on the radio show eddy trunk show...I hope he'll be back
philmiller99 1 year ago
??? Because u know their ''musical direction'' better than them ? Dude the point of music and specialy DT is to be CREATIVE and not always have the big COMMERCIAL SOUND thing ! It's their own style and I think they got 100 % the right to do what they whant and what they feel ! Specialy when u are a virtuose in music and you are theses guys with such a big music background
mistersam666 1 year ago
@mistersam666 I know Scenes From A Memory sounded way more inspired than Systematic Chaos and Black Clouds... and it just suited Labrie's voice a lot better.
darfunkelidas 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas This sounds shit tons more modern than anything DT has done.
DMCMaster550 1 year ago
@DMCMaster550 I never said this doesn't sound modern. But DT's latest albums sound like they are trying to sound like a hard alternative metal band, and Labrie's voice just doesn't fit. Both styles are modern but if you're going to choose between two modern styles, this one is more melodic and it fits Labrie a lot more than the style DT has been using lately. If it were up to me they would go all the way back to playing music without wondering if it sounds "modern" enough.
darfunkelidas 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas But they never wondered that if they wanted their music to sound modern they wouldn't write commercially inappropriate songs. I agree I'd prefer if they let go of a lot of the heavier riffs and the writing of 16 minute long tracks about non-fatal car accidents. I think LaBrie fits the style DT uses vs this screamo stuff here. Personally LaBrie was best on Elements. I still don't get the blame on Portnoy though, Petrucci is just as guilty of the modern metal antics.
DMCMaster550 1 year ago
@DMCMaster550 I agree. I don't see why people keep saying it was Portnoy's fault, if anything it looks like he wasn't happy with what was going on with DT. In any case, Black Clouds felt like they were on the right track, still some modern metal parts but on the right track. Its a shame that Portnoy left. I hope that their next album is good.
darfunkelidas 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas Exactly. I can agree with what you said about Black Clouds, a little modern and they needed some inspiration for Petrucci's lyrics. Same here. Apparently though there's a possibility he'll come back after he's had a break.
DMCMaster550 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas As much as I agree with what you're saying, Dream Theater is a completely different outfit to this. It's not that I don't think it's a good idea, it's just different musicians that mold together create different sounds, and as much as I'd love to hear Dream Theater do something along the lines of this, it's ultimately up to them and where they want to go. Even though I'm sure we all have our varying opinions on music, I think it's fair to say that DT is following what they want.
SlunkLord57 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas in this track he actually sound more like modern hard metal xD
DonDrummer 1 year ago
@DonDrummer yup xDDD
Kaze123456 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas - with the exception of Rite of Passage, Black Clouds and Silver Linings sounded like very authentic Dream Theater.
CNorrisBiggestFan 1 year ago 11
@darfunkelidas I see what you're getting at, but also keep in mind that Mike probably had a lot to do with that. And now that he's gone, ( not to rip on Mike, he's one of my favorite drummers) they might be able to graciously move into more stuff like this.

@Sonjuro197 I'm sorry for accidentally giving your comment thumb down,I agree with you :).
13guitard00d 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas: Yep, since a couple of albums ago, DT deliberately writes vocal lines that don't fit LaBrie.
progrockkeyboardist 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas I disagree, Black Clouds and Silver Linings had some of my favorite vocal parts for me. I also really enjoyed his vocal work on Octavarium.
Deathmethod702 1 year ago 2
@Deathmethod702 same, some moments from Nightmare to Remember and Count of Tuscany are my favourite vocal lines. "In peaceful sedation I lay half awake..." - gives me chills every time.
HumanLarva 1 year ago
I agree 100% ,the music From DT didn't suit James anymore .They pushed him to sing Heavier then his voice should of been used.
nemtall 1 year ago
@darfunkelidas with portnoy gone hopefully they shy away from the more metal sound and head back in a progressive direction more suited to his voice
EpsilonX 1 year ago
@EpsilonX Well, this is heavier than DT and I think it is much more suited to his voice. It doesn't matter what genre it is, just how well the vocal passages and the accompaniment are written. A lot of DT's stuff is written with the instruments in mind, where as this feels much more organic, and more vocal oriented, which makes sense since LaBrie co-wrote all the songs. The only thing i'd want for DT is for LaBrie to take Portnoy's place in the writing process.
GuardianOfFate12 1 year ago
@GuardianOfFate12 this is more melodic though, and stuff like constant motion i don't think is meant to be as melodic. This and the earlier stuff like images and words just felt more natural for him. I'd love for them to return to the more prog side of their sound. And for some better lyrics.
EpsilonX 1 year ago
@EpsilonX: In other words, DT needs a real producer. Now.
progrockkeyboardist 1 year ago
@progrockkeyboardist Basically.
EpsilonX 1 year ago
it'll probably be in 2012 when portnoy comes back... although DT getting a new drummer could probably spark some new inspiration for all of them
Asc3ndans3y 1 year ago
I have to admit, as much as I love Dream Theater, I think I actually like this song better than anything DT's done on the past 2 albums.

@iXiAmPLiFiieDiXi Falling Into Infinity is a great album. Not their absolute best or anything, but still great.

@ProjectBurncan I agree, but Falling is so far away from any other Dream Theater cd, it's as if it was done by another band, but Hell's Kitchen is very good

This is a fine example of why DT will be fine without Mike. James f-ing rocks.

@japeto1 Yes they are all individually outstanding, but true fans know it will never be the same without Mike...Still a depressing time. Still looking forward to all these great sideprojects.

@BillyJimmyBobbyTimmy yeah agree with oyu but side projects like Translatic is kind of boring...
metalmetal9 1 year ago
@BillyJimmyBobbyTimmy , well i agree it won't be the same without mike but that's not a bad thing. Dream theater WILL make a GREAT album without him, i will miss hearing mikes playing, but i'm sure it will be just fine. I have been a fan for 15 years bro :) DT did the right thing by going on !

That's prety good, but it suffers from the same production issues the first three albums did. The only time you can really hear Matt is his part of the solo. Still; it's better than anything you're likely to hear on the radio.
