  • Well done bud. I love the way a radical cam sounds in an inline engine. You did a great job. Love the red and the stance.

  • what sort of upgrades did you do to the engine?

  • This rig is alright. No speed to it but; thats not even an issue here. This 4 banger is about love.....All love man.Anyone know how this would fair against the 8 cyl flatty? (all stock) I know this has a bit of a cam and thought it should run fairly well against the 8 but would enjoy seeing it actually rotate along side one.

  • thats what a four cyl should sound like

  • It looks like the little brother of Jimmy Whites Coup and you are playing him driving on the streets ;-)

  • Do you ever give the engine any gas or are you in the Tuscon Hills Idling club?

  • This is great! This is a love of machines, not your typical bread & butter SB Chevy (nothing wrong with them, just nothing unique). I really enjoy watching/reading build ups of classic iron. Nice job :-)

  • Man, I love that sound. That's what's so great about the bangers, they cough and spit, they just sound bad ass. Nice car, I would love to have an A banger. Easy to see you put a lot of work into this, very cool.

  • If this were my car it would have about a 2" chop. Very bad "a" car none the less.

  • Where do you get your speed parts for an A-banger?

  • @indestructableforce check ebay under Model B ford. A lot of speed parts show up there. Also check online as a lot of people are repoping speed parts. There are a few publications for this hobby as well. "secrets of Speed"," Forever Four" and "FAST"

  • @Robkat3751 thank you. next year I hope to set enough money back to start on one.

  • Way cool

  • The car pulling out into the gravel paved ally looks old skool.

  • that is sweet what kinda power is that old 4 banger pushing out that time do u run the quarter ?????????????????????

  • Its hard to imagine its been almost a year since I last posted. I've spent most of this time hauling Model A's, Parts, Tools and equipment to my new shop in Oak Hills. I hope to post a video response soon. Are you going to be at the L.A. Roadsters show in June? I would enjoy meeting you and seeing your car.

  • Wow! it has been a long time! We hope we can go.... its questionable right now though. We are having problems with the transmission in my dads truck. Its a 7 hour drive for us and with pulling the car on a trailer might be a little much for his truck. If we can solve the problem we will be there (hopefully with the car). I will let you know as soon as we know if we can go or not.

  • that banger sounds insane!!

  • Hey guy:

With all the recent flooding and BAD weather through your area, how did you fair? No damage I hope!

  • Hey

Wow that was a WET week.. Its nice to have dry weather again! We survived... we only had one roof leak and some big branches down but nothing too bad. We were ready with sandbags, so that kept our house dry. Our neighbors lost part of their roof though. The Russo and Steele auction was hit HARD! Millions of dollars worth of cars destroyed!

  • Hi again Guy;

Saw latest videos. What times did you run in 1/4 and how was last hill climb. Thought I read someone broke. Not you I hope.

  • Hey!

This time we ran 1/8 mile at the nostalgia drags. We didn't push the car too hard, as it was our ride home, but we still ran low 11's. yeah, someone broke their transmission at the hill climb. We also blew up our transmission a week before the race! we ran slower this time but still won our class by 0.01sec! It was a good race!

  • Since you're able to get mail to me. I have

good info about new things in store for future.

  • Soudin' strong!

  • love it ! not chevy powered !

  • Knock my eyeballs back & my socks off; This car shines, it absolutely Defines

    C O O L .

    Props!

There ain't a single 350 chevy-equipped rod anywhere that can outshine this car.

    Carry On!

  • Love it :)

  • what ratio's you got in that quick change bud? i remember reading somewhere alot of hopped up 'bangers run pretty tall gears out back. either way, this rod just oodles class! its one of the only 2 4 cylinder motors id ever consider driving!

  • Thanks!

Right now I am running 3.33's for street use, but when I race at hill climbs I usually run 4.30's. I have gears from 2.70 up to 5.29. I've sold most of my really high/low gears. I used to have a set of 7.10's!

  • cool 4 bangers!

  • I am about to finish my Banger setup and was wondering where you got you exhaust header setup at?...been admiring your rod for awhile now.

    let me know...thanks

  • I got the header at the San Diego swap meet 4 or 5 years ago. Then I made the turnouts and baffles. The header was also homemade by someone.

  • I think the sync'ed A-trannys would work really well. The rods from H&H should be ok, but if you are going to have any machine work done, I would suggest looking else where. We went with H&H and the motor was rough and blew up after a few months. This time we went with Phil Andrews and the motor is incredibly smooth running. We haven't run it yet in a 1/4 because a couple issues we had to work, out but we will be racing again soon.

  • we will be going to a couple hill climbs in CA soon and then hopefully the antique nationals next year, so if we don't get to run on a 1/4 mile before then, then we will hopefully get the in 16's then!

  • You mentioned T-5 trans and I thought about Stang T-10's. I found sync'ed A-trannys w/15% higher 2nd & 3rd also 2spd for close drive. H&H has H-beam rods, also have 1.75 intakes w/1.5 or 1.56 exhst valves. Got info on B/blocks, A block is stronger. Good call on B/crank & rods. Amazed at how much avail. for bangers. Someone asked about torq. If 40HP then 80 ft torq, etc. Flatties are torq monsters. Did you get your 16sec 1/4 mi. slip yet? You took 1st in class for coupes at climb right?

  • thanks for the video and all the great comments. next time I go to my parents house I'll be going though the stockpile of A parts, except for body and speedparts I should have everything else. this will be a rod my dad might approve of (he was a purist).

  • What a beautiful car. I love that engine, makes a change from all the V8s. The exhuasts look cool too.

  • Thanks again for the video. I went out to the garage, backyard, storage sheds and realized I wasnt going to get anything done because I have no room to work. In 2 weeks I move into my new 3600 Sq. ft. shop and can finally get busy. I will post a video when Im set up, probably 3 to 6 months from now and show you the progress. By the way, in my collection I own the car I came home in when born, the first car I ever drove, the first car I ever bought (30 coupe) and the first gas oump I ever used.

  • Way cool - I have a pretty much stock banger in my '29 A coupe - Love them bangers!!!

  • who ground the new cam? Which cam is it? 39 tranny? Rear end ratio is?

    Thanks

  • The cam is from American Racing Cams and it is the equivalent to a winfeild full race cam. Its a 39 box with lincoln gears. It has a model A quick change rear end so I can have whatever ratio I want for different driving conditions (I have 25 different combinations)

  • thank you so much for your response. What i want to do is have a street driven cruiser that can keep up with with my friends on the frwy when we are going to the shows. Most of all of them have 350chevys. I would love to have an 4 banger but being able to keep up with them doing 80-90mph and a little more if needed. At the same time dependable though. My engine is bone stock an runs great What size cam do you recomend heads, distributor, spak plugs, trans and rear end?

    thanks you

  • Well, your not going to be able to hold 80- 90 for very long on the highway. My car can hit 80-90's in the 1/4 mile and can do 100 , but with a banger motor you cant hold that speed for very long. At that speed the rpm would be high for a banger and it would not be reliable. You would break parts if you held that speed for very long. I cruise on the highway a 60-70, but i would not suggest holding a speed much higher than that. That speed is possible but the motor will not last very long.

  • You're using a 39 box w/Linc. gears. Anyone used a Zepher box? Didn't they have OD so you could run highway speeds a lower revs? Are you using a flat 8 clutch? On your hill climb t'was said in the back ground you're using a flat 8 water pump? For F.A.S.T. can I just Google. I love banger rods that are drivers and not $30K scared to drive paint jobs.

Had to sell '49 C&C'd & low Clb Coupe w/51 Merc. Hoping to do an A next as driver and am in favor of flat 4.

  • Zepher boxes do have an overdrive and it would help with revs but you would have to make your own adapters to make it work. You can also get an adapter to put a t-5 in it. yeah It's flat 8 clutch. I used an adapter to run a v8 water pump. When you start making a lot of power with a banger the shaft in the stock pump will break, so switching to a v8 pump solves that problem.

  • Thanks for info! Yeah the T-5 would be the least expensive way to go too. Plenty of gutted Stangs around and you could close ratio it in the main 4 gears and keep stock OD. Can't find F.A.S.T. on net. Any links would help. Does your cam profile have duration. Most stock ones look like razor blades. W/Ross slugs, did you use stock rods. Donovans are nice but PRICEY. Are those carbs 79's?

  • thanks for the information it should be very helpful

  • I agree with Saltrat, F.A.S.T is a must! another good magazine is Secrets of Speed. I found most of my parts at swap meets. They are a great place to find parts cheep. I also found a lot of parts on ebay. Its a great place to look.

  • hello i was wondering where did you find the speed equipment ford your model a, is there a web site or a catalog thanks

  • A good place to start is the Ford A Speed Technology website and check out the advertisers. Membership in F.A.S.T is a must!! Im in my 50's and many of these guys were around racing and helping me 30 years ago. This group is an enormous wealth of information.

  • Wow!! That was sweet. I have a 31 model a coupe. Has the Orignal 4 banger.. my friend swhere telling me to pull it out and install a 350 chevy. but after seeing your detailed video. I am sticking wiht it now.. Thanks to you. Any tips on what to get. a simple breakdown would be greatly appreciated. i have always had old V8 chevys so this flat head stuff, is new too me.. I am out of Ontario Californa.. thanks

  • Thanks! Everyone has a 350. Stay with the banger! It depends on where you want to go with the car. Do you want to race it or just have a fun car to drive around? Two of the best things you can do are get a head with higher compression and a bigger cam. Compression makes a big difference in a banger motor. I am running a Weiand head and my motor has over double the stock compression. A cam will also make a big difference. Are you going to build a high performance motor or a fairly mild motor?

  • Sounds Great! Is this a Brierley Cam? Do you have inserts and full oil pressure. Are the cam journals larger for more lift or is the base circle smaller? Are you running a new style pistons. Who made the headers? I assume its got a counterbalanced crank. Is it one of the new ones or add-on weights. Thanks for pointing me back to the garage.

  • Thanks!

The cam is from American Racing Cams. Just rebuilt the motor after breaking the crank. It has inserts and full oil pressure. Just put in Ross pistons. The headers were from a swap meet. The crank is now a B with weights added.

  • Comment removed

  • Im actually from Phoenix, AZ. Phil Andrews did the machine work on the recent rebuild. He does incredible work! The machine work on the crank is just incredible.

  • Now thats a real hot rod.

  • now if that had a hood on it i would defintatly think that its a v8 a very big one lol nice rig man

  • Very cool. It's great to see people doing something different in cars like this then just the tired, boring old 350.

  • Back when 4 bangers where done right!

    the last american 4 cyl...

If they all sounded this wicked nobody would want V8s.

  • awsome rod dude and good idea hiddin it in the back

  • id rather pilot this than mommys honda with a big exhaust tip on it! fuckin wiked man!

  • I see from the fuel pump its a "B" engine also love the quickie. What is the transmission ?

  • The transmission is a 39 box with lincoln gears.

it is actually an "a" block. i think what your seeing is the block off for the oil return

  • I love it !! Nice ride man. Did you have to run a fuel pump to feed the down draft carbs or is it still gravity fed?

  • Thanks! we run a fuel pump. we have a T tank in the trunk.

  • Very nice old school! How much more power is that over stock?

  • Hey thanks!

Stock these motors make 40hp and we are putting out about 120hp

  • sweeet I love those old flatties

  • beautiful!

  • A 4 banger with a note of authority-sounds fantastic-flatheads forever

  • This is real "Old Skool" hot rodding. Very Nice.

  • hey nice model a
