This is an impressive film, considering Lucas' age when made. Two things really stirke me about this video. 1- the boldness of shot selection and camera work. To go with a hood mount as a student filmmaker and a borrowed camera is pretty brave. 2nd- the social engineering that was necessary to pull this off. While the other boys at USC were probably getting boring shots of campus, Lucas went out and got a relatively high-profile race driver to star as the films hero. Pretty awesome stuff.
That's Pete Brock, not Peter Brock. Peter Brock was an Australian racing legend. I'm sure Pete Brock is a very good driver etc, but it's not the same person.
Pete Brock designed the Corvette stingray and the Shelby Daytona Coupe. He is a legend as a designer and team owner, not as a driver. Paul Newman drove for him, He's a legend, right? Won SCCA championships driving Datsuns against Porsches and Jags. Pretty legendary... and he's stil around. Now who's this Peter Brock chap you mentioned?
The ground breaking contrast of cutting between perfectly composed shots and hand held footage - plus the twin cam Lotus sound track (not to mention the tweating birds!!) and you have one of the most subtley gorgeous short films of all time! 10 /10
His compositions have graphical strictness and his images are nearly abstract. Pure Lucas. Anyone else catch his swift editing, that was 20 years ahead of its time? Awesome.
R.I.P Peter Brock Ausrtralian racing legend, died what he loved doing the best way to go in a american car to. won bathurst 1000 9 times australia's hardest endurence race, loved holdens and holden fans, a true champ!!!!!!
ha ha. i always wondered why there was a racing scene in the first new star wars movie. i never made the connection that george has this thing for racing. and yellow vehicles!
Classic! What is interesting is that Ole Olson is credited as special effects man, although he was part of the Coventry Motors/ Alan Grant racing team which ran a Shelby Cobra 289, the paint scheme of which was designed by Lucas...coincidently it was yellow with black stripes! Brock of course worked as an instructor & designer at Shelby American. (very beardy I know!)
It's like this desert place might had been an inspiration for Tatooine and with the adition of the John Williams music would be just like Star Wars, except for the lack of the unique rocky formations canyons, besides the usual hi-tech stuff from the galaxy.
Vodcars, awesome bringing back the vintage...this is what a new car enthusiast needs to see in order to truly understand the source of racing. awesome post guys.
Dammit Lucas can't you make something that doesn't have me wanting my money back at the end of it? I Really can't see how some enjoyed this garbage passed off as a short film. really people c'mon you can't love movie just because there's a nice car and a slick driver in it. Anyway Lucas im coming for my $4.75 that you stole from me for the 4th indy movie in a TRILOGY. Tell Spielberg im going to hit him up next for the other $4.75.

At first the screen ratio was pinched, now it's a little wide.
The "gauge" is the racing rear view mirror. It's glass should be perfectly ROUND....
I've spent some time looking back in one....
Quantum Formula S / DKW 1000 F-C car 1972.... at PBIR and on Ft. Lauderdale taxi ways....

Lucas had a FIAT Abarth 600 while in school.
His all time favorite racing car is the Maserati "Birdcage"
Anakin's pod racer is the front and rear of a Tipo-61 minus the engine bay.

That's the Peter Brock of the BRE Datsun Trans-Am team. not the Aussie. He's alive and well and living in Seattle I think.

That dosen't sound like a Ford Twin Cam.
I'd guess either an Abarth or OSCA mill.....c.1.5 litres
Am I right??

Never mind .. it's Willow Springs. There's a quick one-frame flash of a billboard at around 4:49 that identifies it.

Looks like it was meant to have a narrative... Maybe an unfinished project?
Or maybe George is just waiting to do a re-make with the big budget special effects he really wanted when he filmed it.....
