I love my 85 RZ 500 would never part with it! They don't make bikes like this anymore ,The Comment the 86Gamma guy wrote i don't know what he's smokin up there in Canada he thinks it's ugly has he looked at the overpriced Gamma he drives it looks like a square box with that rear end !! LOL! Lots of the older bikes were not perfect like my 75 H2 no brakes to speak of but still an awesome bike for it's year! I'll take my RZ 500 to my grave!!
@yamrz500 Overpriced Gamma? Dude I've owned all three replicas and can tell you first hand that the Yamaha was the worst! As for being overpriced, its all relative. What would you pay for the "best in class 2 stroke"? Now as far as your H2 is concerned, what bike was faster when it was released? That's one of the things that makes it desireable. Looks are subjective..if you don't like it that's ok not everyone agees on the same things.
@yamrz500 if ever you get a chance to look at an RG500 up close and in detail, I think your opinion would change. Especially if you look at it from a performance point of view.
It was very close to the GP bikes in design. Do yourself a favour and attend one of Rick Lance's Gamma gatherings ( open to RZ's as well) He'll let you ride one of his RGs. After 1 ride I'll guarantee you wish you had never bought the RZ500.
Best thing you did selling that bike. I know I was relieved when someone actually bought my RZ500. Not only was it an ugly bike, but one of the worst handling bikes I've ever been on. It was a flop from the first day it was released. Any old racing footage will confirm this. You almost never saw the RZ/RD500 being raced in any club racing. It was too heavy slow and terrible brakes. It was the ultimate poser bike.
@86GAMMA it was built as the street version of the racing bike duh its a no brainer why they don't perform as well. Honda and suzuki kept their bikes more like the gp ones when they sold them. but for look's out of the 3 main 2 stroke gp based sellers i would have to go rz/rd/nsr/rg. The rg just dosn't cut it despite having the better specs.
@tolikechicken Steet version of the racing bike duh? The RG Gamma was what? The full blown GP bike? They were all street bikes, the difference was that Yamaha was the least faithful to its roots. There was nothing about it that was like the bike it was supposed to emulate. I will give it its due for being the first bike to be released with a full fairing, but that is it. An Rz350 would run circles around that bike! Im not bashing Yamaha, my first bike was an 82 RD350lc and it was FANTASTIC!
@86GAMMA you obviously didn't read my comment to well. and of course a 350 does handle better but the 500 would obviously win around the track due to having more power quicker.
@tolikechicken I read your comment well . Whats the misunderstanding? The RZ500 does have a little bit more power but not much more and not enough to make up the weight advantage that the RZ350 has. The RZ350 would eat an RZ500 on a track.
type this in and watch both parts 1 and 2 and then tell me why there are no RZ500s on the track .Gary Cowan -Yamaha 250- Sunflower trophy 1989 ( part 1 ) And remember its 1989! Look at the entire field of 750s and ask yourself where the RZ/RD500s are.
@tolikechicken Yes the RG500 wins the race but more to the point. No RZ500s were being fielded. There is good reason why. It was a pathetic bike to begin with. Note the TZ250 ( Yamaha ) Half the cc's and finishing 3rd ( very respectable considering engine size). At this point in time the RG500 is already a 4 year old bike and not only is it competing, it WINS.
funny thing is, that bike or an rd400 will smoke your shitty gsxr any day of the week, especially on a track. too bad your stupid squid ass will never make it there.
oh great, a fucking fanboy AND a squid; the username spells it all out.
time to give you an education.
on a track, your bike stands no chance against an rd. a track has straights and GET THIS, corners! the bikes that win do not got fast in the straights, no, they handle well and go fast in the corners. power and speed isn't everything.
the RG500 lacks the refinement and technology that Yamaha's bike has. take a look at motogp and the wins that yamaha has vs suzuki. tells a lot.
@7c3c72602f7054696b I think you need the education, you trying to compare a rd and gamma to a gp bike you dumb f * * *k My 08 gsxr 1000 will live you in the dust on just about any track, stock bikes any day
@7c3c72602f7054696b The RG500 lacks the refinement and technology? Are you serious? The RZ500 was a pathetic replica that was nothing at all like the GP bike. The fairngs is where it ended. An RG500 is light years ahead of the RZ500 in ALL aspects.
Watch old club racing footage from the late 80's. Note not 1 RZ500 in the field and yet RG500 not only racing, but winning in 1989! 4 years after the bike was released! Try that today with a 4 year old bike. Its a known fact that the RG was greater.
This bike is wonderful, the sound of its 4 tailpipes, make me feel momentary happiness. I love it.
