If you base your thought process on avoiding any form of testing for your conclusions, the brain becomes so well trained to avoid introspection that it can not distinguish between fantasy and reality. I've seen it happen. Faith-heads I've known all my life become more demented as time passes. Some in their late 40's can rarely form cohesive statements. It's disturbing because I become more rational as I age and have to witness people I care about regress and suffer.

Many rationalistic Atheists are reported to be more familiar with the Bible than we are, but being able to memorise,cite and quote the Bible does not mean they can interpret the Bible correctly, when we try to interpret the Bible we are essentially trying to read the minds of its authors, which is very difficult since they died long ago.

True. If you base your thought process on avoiding any form of testing for your conclusions, the brain becomes so well trained to avoid introspection that it can not distinguish between fantasy and reality. I've seen it happen. Faith-heads I've known all my life become more demented as time passes. Some in their late 40's can rarely form cohesive statements. It's disturbing because I become more rational as I age and have to witness people I care about regress and suffer.

They are Highly intelligent and well knowledgeable on many things. When Mark Vonnegut heard voices, he knew it wasn't right. They were telling him his father (Kurt Vonnegut Jr.) was dead, when he knew that to be false. But they seemed very convincing. HOWEVER, because he did not ascribe that voice to God, he was able to retain enough sense to seek medical help. If he'd been a true believer, he would have had a ready explanation for the voice in his head. Religion may not cause mental illness, but it certainly fits comfortably into a framework of insanity.

I notice a lot of "either...or" sentences tend to be used in strawman arguments or statements setting up a false dichotomy, which is giving 2 possibilities (e.g. atoms acquiring intelligence vs ID) when in fact many possibilities exist. I did not think it would be worth it to re-attach the hand. Not only for being worthless at that point but the guy would probably just have another mental relapse and try to take it off again.
