  • Thank you. I wonder why DFD does not sing the second strophe. I know this song with Brigitte Fassbaender a very different interpretation. The second strophe says: "Wohl, wohl war es süß, was dort mich band", rather than " Fern, fern liegt der Schmerz, der dort mich band" in the first . That may be one of the reasons why I feel that with BF this song is more intimate and more tragic, although less dramatic.

  • @Mrpiazzetta

I wondered that too. I cannot imagine why he would not record the other verse. I haven't heard BF but I do have Holzmair singing the complete version and feel it is a better song that way. The glory of these songs it that they leave room for multiple interpretations.

  • Hallo Caren,

herzlichen Dank für dieses wunderschöne Video. Sie machen sich unglaublich viel Mühe mit Ihren Videos, die ich als unglaublich gelungen empfinde.

  • Also, I truly appreciate the beauty and creativity of your video production, which complements the beauty of the recording so well. A must-save to favorites.

  • Thank you so much!

  • DFD: A treasure, a musical legend firmly placed in the history of vocal music. And to think that we nearly lost him in WW II and the wolrd would not have known what they had missed.

  • DFD was the top lieder singer in Germany for many years.

  • A lovely song sung by a very fine singer!

  • Fischer-Dieskau is one of my favourite lieder singer. Thank you.

  • Thank you Karen for introducing me to this piece:) The song flows so gently like a river & its very releaxing:)

  • Thank you, Karen. I haven't heard this recording since the 1970s, when I had the LP set of Mendelssohn Lieder. I remember that I was attracted to this song in particular, which at the time seemed so different from all the others. One of my all time favourites.

  • Thanks, Helen. I can't believe that I wasn't really familiar with this song. I have the CD but hadn't listened to it that often. You know how it is. So much DFD, so little time, lol.

  • der englische Teil im Booklet zu dieser Aufnahme: "SCHEIDEND is in a more familiar vein but a song of great beauty and sensitiveness. There are various unexpected touches, such as the harmony at the word "Fluten", that convey a strange sense of distance, and its tenderly valedictory mood make it a fitting conclusion to this selecion of songs." (Philip Radcliffe, 1971)

  • Thank you for posting these notes. The song does stand apart from Mendelssohn's other songs, doesn't it.

  • I am so happy you are pleased with it, Monika. I really did not know this song very well so I am thankful for your suggesting it to me. It is wonderful!

  • Magical - and I concur entirely with the first commenter. Thank you so very much!

  • Thanks, Barb. It made a nice diversion from my ongoing Pfitzner project.

  • Simply wonderful!!!!!

(but what is not wonderful in your site?)

  • Thank you, Ferdinando. I must get over and view your latest. Did I see some Wolf? :)
