i just ordered a 2nd gen ipod touch from amazon and then i seen a reivew saying the archos is better i almost had a heart attack....scrambling to cancel my order but now i seen this and im relevied look how long it takes just to load something and then you see the hour glass to zoom in on it...
so the archos comes in 160Gb instead of the ipod with 32Gb at the highest. Ipod touch is a money burner they are still like 300 bucks i bought an archos today for 150 buck free shipping from future shop and besides screw apps most are pointless. but the iphone does have some cool apps
ipod touch is better cause the archos is much heavier, why the heck will you have a large heavy mp3 player in your pocket. Ipod touch is portable and has hundreds of apps and more comin. Just think, how big the archos is its just to big and the touch has a better look
I just got my iPod touch 2g it's way better then archos. Built in iTunes store app store better internet responsive touch screen and much more. multi touch accelerometer I couldn't name as much with the archos
firstly i bought an archos 605/160, the larger screen is really cool, and 160 gigs of hhd was awesome, but the usability was horrorific and not really accurate, especially the browser.
its not my aim to encourage raised archos tempers and I guess my expectations were too high. but i brought it back after all and i bought an ipod touch 32gb.
in the end; keept the ipod touch for a number of good and many reasons.
Without those features, the Archo's is worth it even just for the highest resolution, greater colour range, larger screen, and greater storage capacity. Then you start throwing in all the extras, net surfing, wifi, recording television straight from your tv, granted you need an add-on for that, but it's worth the price.
i just think that the archos attracts consumers with concepts that just appeal to the enthusiasts but totally unnecessary to the majority of possible users, i mean all it takes to transfer files is to physically connect to the pc, it isn't that difficult nor challenging. Register movies from tv? who would purposely feel the need to do that? just because the concept's cool doesn't mean it's practical
i personally would sacrifice all those for the portability of the touch and the user interface

It can easily fit inside my suit pocket, functions are very different : could you registrer movies from your TV with your iPod Touch ? Could you buy, download and view some movies on streaming from differents web portals woth your iPod ? Could you directly transfer files from your PC, Camera, USB key or external HDD with your iPod ? Could iPod be compatible with divx, wmv or mpeg2 ?

Ive owned 2 Archos MP4 Players (AV400 80GB) and now own a 605 WIFI 160GB. I Also have the docking station,can record TV through my set top box (DIGITAL QUALITY) and record my DVD's directy on to it. Apple's crappy Ipod touch cant do this, and is way more expensive in Australia ($600 for 32GB) as compared to around $700 for a 160GB Archos.....why the F would you get an apple......FUK ! With archos products, no conversion is needed : you just have to put your video on your player through windows explorer (for example) and play !
You don't need iTunes or other boring softwares and - probably the most important - copy process from PC to player is 3 or 4 times quicker than with your iPhone or iPod Touch...

well, i highly highly highly recommend the ipod touch, as you can see in the video, the response is smooth, fast, and satisfying. the 605, however was slow and unresponsive. if ur looking for a computer like experience, it depends if you like a fast or a slow one (lol). anyway, i have an ipod touch, and i couldn't be happier.
On the surface iPod touch has that "cool" factor, but for day to day operations archos is simply better value with more features. 90%+ of content downloaded via file sharing is playable on archos (DIVX/XVID) whereas iPod requires transcoding which takes hours per movie. This demo here is entirely misleading as, if you notice, it BARELY zooms in on the iPod so its smooth whereas with archos it actually zooms, therefor the jerkiness. My comp does that too when I zoom.
While a touch screen IS really "cool", and the iPod's IS better (archos had it first though), do really want to be putting your greasy hands all over your screen? Do you want to scratch it to hell? Do you want to touch your comp's LCD screen? Hell no. Touch screen is a novelty that SHOULD be avoided. Archos actually has buttons that you will be very glad to have.

I have a 605 and it runs pretty great. I chose mine over an iPod Touch b/c the Archos is just a better value. After looking at what each one had to offer, the Archos is way better. It has much more space, is flash-enabled (which means flash games), has a higher resolution screen, and costs less. No competition really.
Totally agree with you, I've got the expandible SD slot with a 8GB HCSD card and managed to fit 12 full lenght movies on it and against the Touch the 605 has a built in speaker so you don't have to buy attachment speaker dock.
If you look, you will see that the archos actually zoomed in whereas iPod barely did so. As you Should know, based upon google maps use on your comp, the "results" are cached, so prior zooming means it zooms it will zoom in faster on subsequent zooms at the same spot. The point is that this demo is of little value. If you are questioning archos wifi abilities, understand that the archos wifi provides for unfettered file system access on your computer: something that iPod will NEVER let you do
What do I like about iPod Touch? Again, the touch screen IS very impressive (better than archos, but just not very useful) and I do like the ample 8gb flash memory versus the higher capacity archos HD memory. Archos made a HUGE mistep by outfitting their new flash pvp with only 2gb (expandable via slot though). Image quality is debatable as even though archos IS higher res, many people (not most) prefer the iPod. Thing to note here is that archos has a truer image wheras iPod is filtered.

two reason's why the Archos 605 is slower when rescaling pictures:
1) Doesn't scale-down images like the iPod touch does, therefore, the 605 has to deal with a higher-resolution image which is more processor intensive and will result in slower performance

This measure has merit for archos because archos can actually play these movies immediately. iPod users, however, MUST transcode their videos, compressing them even further as they do, typically down to 300mb. I think I might know the reason why the 605 seems much slower in this video. I have neither an archos or an ipod touch, but I know that itunes scales down photo resolution to put on your ipod. I bet the archos doesn't scale down resolution, so its dealing with a lot more data when you zoom and move around.

the video quality is much better on archos...

man ipod touch rocks that thing looks like a danm portable tv i didnt even know it was a mp3 player only thing it has on the ipod is that the screen is bigger but ipod s will always rule that thing is big as hell it cant go in your pocket and its off brand i never heard of archos

you must live in a cave if you've never heard of archos, there are plenty of videos of people proving the archos fits in the pocket just fine. Plus archos comes in 30GB and 80GB, but I guess if you must have your ipod that holds 10 videos max over the archos's 30+ that's cool too

I was just trying to make a point, plus archos has a 160 GB as well. Thats 10 times the space of a 16GB touch. Sorry if I affended you how many movies DO you have on your touch?

The way it works is this: if you download a movie via file sharing the file size is typically 700mb. This would equate to roughly 10 movies on iPod touch. This measure has merit for archos because archos can actually play these movies immediately. iPod users, however, MUST transcode their videos, compressing them even further as they do, typically down to 300mb. So, you CAN fit more than 10, but you must compress, reducing quality and wasting your precious time. simple.

spoken like a true oblivious apple fiend. ur like the annoying ricer that is always talking about NOS not knowing its a brand rather than the actual product. before you go making those statements, how about you look up the facts. it has 10x the memory and its barely larger than the touch. archos is more popular in european countries. its not meant to look like a glossy bitch mp3... its for mass storage.

i dont care about the space 16 gb is enough for me and for most people, what I really care is the battery life, thats why i firstly bought the cowon d2 with 52 hours of durability :) but only 4gb and an sd expansion...

pple actually buy the itouch?? yes it's cute and pretty but only little girls care about that shit. I need functionality!! And 16gb? joke? What can you do with 16gb? people who buy the itouch don't really listen to music or or watch videos, they just buy so they can be like oohhh i have a shiny thingy or else they would know that it's insufficient. Itouch is a scam the only reason why i would buy it is so i could take a crap on it and post a video on youtube via my 605

Then you'll want to have a look at Archos' superior browser.
The touch's safari browser only plays youtube videos at full resolution.
The Opera browser in the Archos streams any flash video format to full screen.
Also, you may want to look into the fact that the Archos supports more audio and video codecs than the touch.
The Archos' screen is also a higher resolution than the touch's screen.
And again, 160 GB > 16 GB
All for a price lower than the touch.

iRiver definetely beats out the ipod in the sound quality and features department (iRiver clix2) plus it looks way better than the ipod touch design.

yep the resolution is higher. the only reason the touch looks better is because of its protective anti scratch screen. i hope they make a 6th gen so bad. by using the itouch as a model, they can make the 6th gen better by adding an easier zoom and better scrolling for the internet. other than that its perfect. and they should allow template plugins

iRiver makes some fantastic gear. I promise you that people in the know are aware of iRiver gear, similarily Cowon, which kills almost everything. To knock iRiver, whose clix was a market breakthrough, is just ignorant.

The archos can run higher res pictures and as you can see it is zooming in way closer than the ipod. so put little bit of thought into your response before you say ipod wins.

I think I might know the reason why the 605 seems much slower in this video. I have neither an archos or an ipod touch, but I know that itunes scales down photo resolution to put on your ipod. I bet the archos doesn't scale down resolution, so its dealing with a lot more data when you zoom and move around.
