@corbean10 yes, my parents actually trained their newest one. not the quietest girl, but amazingly well-behaved off-leash and has never once tried to run, etc. i think they hired someone to do the training for that though
Any dog can be trained off leash. But only if the owner has half a brain. Your dog will get it only when you get it. If it isn't doing well off the leash, then it's you that need training. STOP BEING SO STUPID AND LEARN TO LOVE YOUR DOG. Learn what you dont know: It's you not your dog that needs training.
@TheSongsparrow if dogs dont need training how do they learn tricks they dont just fuckin now how to sit on command and stay with u when walking out side true it is possible but 4 some dogs its hard and a dog isnt as smart as humans it wont get algebra when u get it and love doesnt make it do what u want .oh i love u now play dead fly .thats how dumb u are
My little lady, Moose, was terrified of her squeaky platypus the first time she saw it, but a couple of weeks later she went to the closet where we'd stored it and barked until we got it out for her. It's been her buddy ever since. She also barks at the thermostat (I'm not kidding) if she thinks it's too hot! She's twelve years old now, and recently had an expensive misadventure with a box of chocolate($469.34, not counting the candy), but she remains great company.
I have but when people are around they tend to get distracted. train with a very long skinny rope in a wide area and keep calling her name until they listen and if she goes to run away just step on the roope, they like it when they have some freedom to explore and after awhile they will goahead of you but if u walk away they wil follow just let them know ur walking away, it only took our dog a weekend to learn!and she is a norwegian elkhound!~
@corbean10 Mines always been fine. I didn't actually really have to train him. I found with another dog that if you run with them they should run next to you and then if you slow down the pace until your walking they get used to it and just stick with you, worked for me anyway.
@corbean10 Somewhat. Lucky has had a TON of training as a therapy dog and is very obedient. She's OK off-leash if she's just going out to the car or out front to pee, but I have to watch her the whole time to make sure she doesn't go chase down a bird and run off or something.

i have a question for the norweigan elkhound owners: have any of you been able to train an elkhound off-leash?
corbean10 2 years ago
haha never bothered to try.. i live out in the country so she had a 4 acre plot to roam
BruggsBunny 2 years ago
Yes I had a girl by the name of valkyrie for 12 years and she easily went out side by herself without any problems until she died last october.
JDRhoads07 2 years ago
You shouldnt make it off-leash unless the dog is VERY obedient, its going to run away if it isnt.

@MonicaRidesMoto : That was my experience with my Elkhound. For walks he was always on leash. If not he'd chase down birds, rabbits, skunks!!!
