  • Where did you get the sheet music for just isles part in the song? I really need it for an audition!

  • She's not bad at all. I miss Pritchard though :/ Her voice was so unique.

  • i love how these illegal vids have 11,000 vidds XD ahahahhahhahahh

  • I love her voice!!beautiful

  • Did I mention I love you for recording this??

  • she's amazing. her voice is beautiful.

Her performance always make me cry.

    Cant believe SA is ending!!!

  • Her voice is like a breath of fresh air to me. You have all of these harder folk-rock songs and then she comes in with this beautiful voice. I think she's great.

  • i saw her in this 2 days ago and she was abosolutly amazing, in this song and in every song and scene she was in, in purple summer she looked right at me and smiled, of course i smiled right back!! she was phenomanal!

  • I saw Spring Awakening back in July, and Emma as Ilse and Blake as Moritz where my two favorites. Emma was absolutely INCREDIBLE, not only was her voice beautiful but she was heartbreaking in her acting. She was literally almost sobbing when she left Moritz after this number.

  • she has the perfect voice. i saw her in NYC she was great!!! a great actress too!

  • Vocally yes, I agree that she is not as good. But her acting was by far the best of all the cast when I saw it, her performance was so moving.

  • emma was amazing. her voice gave me goosebumps when i saw her.

  • unfortunately, i liked lauren pritchard better. however, emma is still very good, and i did indeed like her in the role very much. i prefer pritchard simply because her voice is more organic and raw sounding, which i think works a little better for the show.

  • I tend to agree that Lauren was a much better Ilse. Most of the people at intermission said that Emma sounded more like she was singing on a high school stage than on a Broadway stage.

Lauren's voice was just more professional sounding--a beautiful quality. People were surprised that Emma was so overweight--I guess they expected more of a Lauren Pritchard look, and their body and hair types are quite diverse.

I think all body types should be accepted on stage.

  • Oh, that was so mean of the people to say.

Her voice is perfect for the show....beyond high school expectations.

She's not "so overweight". I don't see anything wrong with not being a stick figure (I'm not saying that Lauren is...she's not).

Emma and Lauren have voices of completely different tonal quality, that I find it hard to like one over the other.

  • I agree with the comment below. She breaks my heart every time. It's even more amazing in the theatre than in this recording. She also looks more like the ideal of beauty back in the 19th century than lauren Pritchard.

  • she is incredible. when i saw her live, her voice was positively flawless...

  • hahaha, i just listened to this AGAIN and when she says "sure, when it's autumn...", her "sure" sounds like phoebe's...HAHAHAHA

spring awakening and ALL ITS PERFORMERS = <3

  • gahhhd evveryone on broadway is amazing

  • she's amazing. props to casting agents =]

  • emma hunton takes my breath away. she is the only ilse that has ever made me cry. i went in thinking i would not like her because i was convinced that lauren was my favourite, but she blew me away.

  • With each sound that comes out of her mouth... she breaks my heart. Granted, Emma is the only Ilse I've seen (I've seen her 3 times)... each time, she takes my breath away, makes it hard for me to cope... she breaks my heart in the most beautiful way possible. This is such a beautiful role, and one of my dreams to perform one day. Go Emma!

  • in almost every song they use handheld/mic stand mics, except for a few, like word of your body. however, im pretty sure that even in the songs when they use handheld mics, they are actually using internal mics, and the handheld mics are just for show. they are using mic stands in this song, and they aren't singing it to eachother, they are on opposite sides of the stage.

  • i think that it was consistent enough.

  • b/c in WOYB (NOT the reprise), they are holding hands so it wouldn't work holding mics.

  • no it's internal. i'm thinking that it's not pleasing to the eye to see microphones in that scene...perhaps. besides if they were singing to each other, they would have taken action over their feelings a lot sooner.

  • i was at this performance!!! it was my first time seeing emma and she blew me away. she's outstanding. love her.

  • it's not really storytelling. the songs are just their way of channeling their thoughts and feelings.

  • well for most of the internal monologues like WOYB (and the reprise), DDS/BW they want to convey their feelings but it's either that they think that they shouldn't or they just don't know how to say it.

  • they aren't really conveying their thoughts to each other. it's just their inner thoughts that are being sung.

when I auditioned for spring awakening we were given a sheet that said they were looking for strong actors and singers...so yes you definitely need great actors. Even though SA is technically a musical, it's really presented as a play and a rock concert.

  • now that was the objective of all of the songs in the show. each song is an internal monologue except for the major group numbers. nobody truly sings to each other in the show.

  • Usually songs have something to do with wanting but in Don't Do Sadness, Moritz say that he doesn't care in the song. i think that she's making an analysis based on her reminiscence of their childhood after realizing how much they changed.

  • well it does relate to her reminiscence of them playing pirates as kids and then realizing how they've grown and changed.

  • i think that "blue wind" represents all of the characters's youth.

  • honestly i think that Blue Wind is the only song that truly speaks for the whole show. If you think about it, Blue Wind speaks for the whole show. "Spring (Adolescence) and Summer (Adulthood)/every other day (we are still young but we are slowly maturing)".

  • the off-broadway clip is on Youtube. i'd prefer you check it out yourself.

i felt that her acting was less forced and more natural.

  • i said that her acting was really good when the production was off-broadway.

  • I like her as Ilse...while I liked Lauren sooooo much, emma's good...they wouldn't have put her on broadway if they didn't think she fit the character that they wanted

i actually really like the way that Emma holds out her notes...it makes me feel like she wants something...more than what she has...

I LIKE!!...and really, stop hating, everyone...

  • I like her, I just don't like how she ends her words sometimes. I know it that sounds weird, but sometimes the way she says things sound weird. but I DO lik her.

  • I saw her and I'm definitely not a fan of her acting.

  • hmmmm she is on Broadway and you are on youtube.....hmmmm interesting.

  • Sorry this comment was meant for leaderslove.

  • Are you saying that every person on broadway is absolutely amazing? I'm allowed to have an opinion on which person I prefer in a role, thank you very much.

  • Originally, I wasn't really a fan of Hunton. But I came to adore Phoebe's performance as Ilse. And she brought a smoother, richer voice to the character. And that really helped the transiion from Lauren to Emma, for me. Now I really appreciate this vocal.

  • i like her and lauren. i think they both bring something different to the charater of Ilse

  • her voice doesn't have the depth that lauren's voice has.

the show is largely based on creating emotion through voice.

  • not necessarily. the LYRICS are so key to the show and Emma is so expressive with the words. B/c of that, it's so much easier to understand what the song is actually about. lauren's a great singer but she didn't act the song so i wasn't completely touched by her.

  • I went to see it on that day/time!!

I hadn't heard about this musical before til I was being woken up at 6AM to go get in the front of the line for the student rush tickets. I was visiting a friend for Spring break!

  • I keep coming back to this hoping that it will be better. She completely sucks. I don't understand how she got this part. I am astounded.

  • Astounded? Don't you mean.....Jealous?????

  • In what way does she suck? In the fact that she's different from Lauren Pritchard? Emma's voice is very controlled and pure. Her voice is beautiful, I don't see how you can say otherwise!

  • different, but I love it =) it's hard not to

I will be seeing a completely different cast when I see it anyway, seeing as I am an English kid =) So I will be seeing an English cast when it finally comes over here! so they'll all be different, but amazing in their own right, just like Emma

  • she sounds good but nothing will compare to lauren! EVER! she stole that show when i saw it in august and now i dont know who will ever be able to compare to her.

  • def! i love lauren. emma bugs me. alot.

  • i love love loveee her. i saw her on sunday and i thought she was soooo fantastic. as much as i amdire lauren, i think she did a really good job of making the part her own.

  • well her voice is definetly different than lauren's-

but i feel that they do the song justice in their own ways.

  • Wow! There are some that seem a bit obsessed with her "vowels" but whatevs. hahaha. Care ought to be taken not to analyze things to such a degree or many things in life will disappoint. Sometimes it's just a vowel.... :\

  • there's a different quality in emma's voice. she has captivating aura in her performance.

  • I liek her...different from Lauren but a beautiful voice none the less. I can't wait to see the show again so I can see her in it.

  • i think she's okay...i do prefer lauren pritchard's voice but everyone is different.

i am kind of weirded out by her hair though.

  • she's good. no, she's great, but lauren was AMAZING. it's just her voice is soo.. different than laurens

  • OMG I can't believe the boo hooing going on here. Clearly they liked Emma enough to give her the job. Sounds like bitter grapes to me. I guess a Pulitzer winning producer doesn't know what he is doing by hiring her. Get over yourselves. Maybe community theatre is better suited for you.

  • ugh,

    sooo jealous.

  • you so should have been the new ilse =]

im not saying that i dont like emma though...she's ok

  • I agree with yellaheartswicked, you Megan Pasley should of been Ilse. You seem to have that darkness of Ilse and you really look the part. I want to be Ilse after you play Ilse lol. :)

  • She has a pretty voice. As for her not being an Ilse. Thats up to interpretation of course, but thats dumb. Ilse is such an enigma that she can be anything the actor wants. She was only in the original play for two flippin scenes! Obviously she doesnt sound like Lauren but thats what makes her so good. She sounds younger than Lauren. May we not forget that Ilse is a 14 year old girl. The producers also didnt want a Lauren clone. And everyone in that show has sucky vowels. *caugh* JGalls*caugh*

  • I know Emma Hunton! She is one of my friends from Acting class!

  • T.T i miss lauren.

  • I saw Eryn Murman as Ilse. Lauren was still in the show at the time but she was absent. I love Emma, Eryn, and Lauren. They have great Voices.

  • Not bad...IDK, I prefer Lauren.

  • I'm sorry but she is not good at all. I am sure there were much better people out there that they could have chosen. Her vowels are horrible. She has a nice voice...but she is not an Ilse.

  • I agree. fully.

  • sorry that you feel that way.

I feel the producer haven't let us down yet with replacements.

    Same for you kaayla.

P.S. If she's not good, why is she on Broadway??? Just wondering.

  • I'm asking myself the same question. I went to the Chicago auditions, and I heard waaay better potential Ilse's. Everyone has their opinions.

  • So I'm trying to understand this vowel problem you have. How is she supposed to sing this song? She is saying the words correctly. Are you from America? Maybe this is a language barrier issue. I don't know. But to say "her vowels are horrible" actually made me laugh out loud. I have never heard that kind of criticism before. I sure hope no one hold you to the same impossible standards, I'm sure even you would fall short.

  • lauren's ilse was an american hippie cliche

Emma's ilse actually feels artistic and captivating

    she's brilliant

I personally think that she has a technically stronger voice than lauren.

and her acting is leaps, and bounds over laurens

those who say that ilse is all about her songs are sadly mistaken

her lines before, and after blue wind are very important to the show

and important in showing the contrast in her, and moritz lifestyles

  • i agree with you. she may not be the best, but she IS really good. that is why she is on Broadway

  • omg sorry guys, i wuz reffering to subwayxmyantidrug. emma is my new favorite isle.

still haven't got use to this whole commenting thing. soorrry.

  • I wish you would've spelled her name right... :(.

  • omg i am soooo sorry. i made a typo.

  • I completely agree with Meagan, one hundred percent. Her voice is tolerable(I guess...), but as for her being Ilse, I'm sorry... It's an absolute no. And her vowels... Sheesh. Please do not get me started. I also went to the Chicago auditions, and there were many, many more people to choose from, and I mean that. I will admit that I am jealous of her, but there were people there that are better than I am, and they are definitely better than her.

  • were you called back for Ilse, rnjt07?

  • have you seen her?

  • I have seen Emma and Lauren. I like them both. I think they each bring something of their own to the role. I think it is ridiculous to say her vowels are a mess or whatever. WTF does that even mean? I mean come on already. It feels like some are grasping at anything just to criticize. I don't get it. I admire those that have accomplished what I cannot. I don't presume to know better then they.

  • oh that wasn't directed to you lol

    I prefer Emma to lauren

I think she's strong in both acting, and singing

as opposed to lauren who GAVE IT with the vocals, but her line readings didn't capture me, or keep me invested at all

  • I loved Emma's performance. Her acting really grasped me.

  • DAY-UM!

    I love her!!!

  • ahaha me too!

  • Do you have this full show and is it up for trade?

  • i wish i did! but no, sorry!

i recorded this on my camera and i only had enough memory space left for stage door pics =[

  • that was gorgeous.

  • She sounds amazing!

  • though she is no lauren pritchard, she happens to be AMAZING. i like her voice

  • her voice really is beautiful

  • AMAZING!!!!!

  • shes taking to long to sing her word.

  • O":

  • i love her
