Wasn't this a part of a series of tests NASA did on jet fuel? They developed a fuel that didn't flash the way the fuel in this video did, and were able to show a dramatic increase in survival possibility.

Finally, someone with a brain. YES, this was a test involving a gel based jet fuel to help stop the fuel from just spilling out everywhere. In fact when I 1st saw this back when, this proved that this new fuel didn't work, (obviously), but at least somebody was/is trying to make air mishaps a little more survivable.

Actually, looking at this, seems the people inside were protected from the fire and shit outside like in a cocoon, except those poor fuckers at the front where the flames came in. This kind of crash looks quite survivable, if you can get out of the plane quickly after its come to a stop, your biggest worry should be the smoke suffocating you before you can make it out.

Hmm actually being eaten alive by another living creature would probably be the most frightening and primal ways you could die. IIRC, it was said at the time that this would have been a survivable crash if not for the fire. Even so, the survivors would have had the worst cases ever of whiplash. Even before seeing this again, I remembered how badly the crash test dummies were bounced around on impact.

This was supposed to be a controlled destructive test of a fuel additive which was supposed to gel the fuel to keep it from atomizing, and a test of internal passenger constraints, hence the interior cameras. The plane was remote controlled, all the passengers were dummies. The controls weren't robust enough; the plane crashed on one side during the landing. There were caltrops set to rip the wing tanks open; when they did, the fuel exploded magnificently, proving the additive didn't work.

2. Survivability of passenger safety equipment.
