How does he achieve the variation in pitch on the large tabla? I know nothing about percussion instruments so I apologize if there is an obvious answer.
My son Shakur has just commented that Zakir Hussain's tabla playing sounded like a herd of wildebeest coming past. Thanks for your brilliance, maestro...
I had the pleasure of seeing/hearing! Zakir for the first time last night, along with the wonderful band of musicians and singer he had for the opening concert at "Celtic Connections" in Glasgow - exceptional experience!
Please view my tabla solo video in competition. Just search "Jibran Tabla," and my most recent one will be the second video.Comments are really appreciated, thanks a lot!
Zakir's mastery of time is so profound that he bends it to his will, probably because his hands move so close to relativistic light speeds. You can see him actually slip in and out of our time stream at 0:39-0:40. I want to be near him during the 2012 Eschaton. Ha ha ha.
He has good camand on chakardar, tirkit and dhir-dhir kit tak......it's tru that he is a great tabla player in the world now. he is doing good job.and keep playing..
What a amazing performance, it appears divine power is flowing through the fingers of this young player which is unheard of such rhythmic effect on listners.
In this SF Bay Area, since Alla Rakha's era, I've heard many tabla players but no one IMHO has come close to Zakirji's playing. His very being/soul is tabla / rhythm..no separation. Thanks for posting.
It's a pretty crappy video, but the sound is great. I saw him live once in 1985. He was incredible, and I was in a trance by the end of the night. It's pretty amazing that one person can make the sounds he makes.

he is very good solo tabla player....but the real test is when u play with some classical music ustad like ustad salamat ali khan or fateh ali khan...thats when ur skills are tested/challenged to the limit.....solo is in fact very easy as u don't need to follow some one....anyways....his solo skills r no doubt one of the best in the world.
have you heard him play with Hariharan, Pandit Jasraj, Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma or Pt hariprasad Chaurasia, or have you even heard him play with his own father? it is clear that you have not heard a single Jugalbandi piece of his.

hariprasad chaurasia, shiv kumar sharma, pt jasraj, ravi shankar, hariharan, john mclaughlin, beca fleck, jan garbarek are not maestros? is only keeping theka and making the artist enough for u? it is clear that you are not someone who has learnt tabla as you have no respect for the instrument.
@irfankhan69 Zakir bhai has played with more maestros than I can count. And as for solos, my friend, you can not make a comment like "solo is in fact is very easy as u don't need to follow some one". Since when was "following" desirable. In a solo, the artist can play compositions so much more complex than what he/she would plays in accompaniment. The entire essence of Tabla is exemplified during a solo. Accompaniment is good, but the true test in Tabla is when you perform a solo.
@KumarTabla . the true test in accompaniment. When you accompany you must play with such control that the other artist is not intimidated and at the same time you are not forgotten. There are very few artists who can do both...well. And mastery of accompaniment should not just be limited to classical arts... a good tabla player will be able to accompany many different genres with ease. From Rajasthani folk to ghazal, from khayal to thumri. A good tabla player will be able to play with all.
"just a master of tabla" ? anyone who masters the delicate complexities of the bols of tabla, in my opinion one of the most natural sounding percussion instruments out there, deserves more than "just a master of tabla". Also, the bols of the tabla are applicable to a whole world of hand percussion instruments; a master of tabla will have little trouble mastering the derbaki, congas, djembe, etc. though i haven't seen him on a marimba, the statement isn't really that big of a stretch.

You tell me it is not a real POWER instrument and I will show you someone who knows nothing of music. It is THE Power Drum - according to Mickey Hart and Marco Minnemann and countless others. You are funny.
Say what? As a percussionist who has played Congas, Bata and Kit for 30 years I have no idea wqhere tou are coming from with that statement. "It does not have the power of a real drum". Take the cotton out of your ears and put it in your mouth. I have done 2 shows w/ Zakir and have rarely met a more humble musician and warm human being.
The Benaras style is more powerful, and the Delhi style is more subtle and delicate, with other styles falling in between. So maybe you'd enjoy checking out the Benaras gharana players, or even pakhawaj / mridangam.
Also, you can't really compare tabla to a drum set. It is more comparable to a bass guitar, or some melodic instrument. A bass guitarist can play tabla repertoire more accurately than a drummer, who have no ringing bass notes and who can't play gamaki patterns.
And you sir? Why make that statement? He has actually taught drummers and Conga players and many percussionist that play something other than the tabla - I see you are jealous or else such an ignorant comment would not have come from your mind to your fingertips.

can anyone recommend any CD's with this style of music?

Hi ILove, some years ago I collected Cd´s where Zakir played tabla.
I would recommend the Album Making Music.
Of course there are lot´s of CD´s with Indian Ragas, but if you prefer some kind of fusion "Shakti" is also very good.
