One of the BEST lessons i have seen yet on youtube! I love this guy! Its great that he does these clinics because hes such a natural teacher and due to his career, teaching is probably not on his radar screen at all. You can just sesnse his pure love for the instrument in these videos. Would be great to have a one on one lesson/jam with him.
paul! you got me out of said rut! :D never thought it would end. although half the licks were racer x riffs n such so you kind of put me there to begin with. damn you and your great song writing and guitar skills. also thank you and your great song writing and guitar skills
Paul. You are modest, dominant, one of the best, and everytime i watch you i'm inspired. Everything you play is golden and I wish I knew 1/20th of what you know. Thank you Paul for everything you do :) ps.......i love you... LOL
It's quite astonishing if not moderately horrifying to hear someone giving a lesson on the concept of applying rhythm to music. Surely exiting rhythms are elementary to captivating music? Music is supposed to have a good rhythm in the first place. Or does he and his audience only understand Neanderthal ROCK patterns with continuous BIG GUITARS monotonously plodding along. It's like rhythm and blues, funk and jazz never existed.
i have watched a thousand videos of paul gilbert and always thought(knew) that he was a robot but he makes a mistake so hes humans its possible for humans to play like paul gilbert.. this gives me one hell of a lot of hope for the future
This proves that everything in music is a inspired variation of something else. Creativity is being able to make something of your own out a inspiration from something that was done by someone else before you.
That was really quite helpful and certainly made me think about my playing in a very different way thanks man... So obvious and relatively simple way to rethink your playing style...
5.17 the moment paul says "drummers" look at the drummers face! aww he caught the smile before he went un rocknroll but we saw it! must feel great having Paul Gilbert refer to you as a "master" ; )
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Paul, you're playing a freekin' enharmonic instrument. Pay more attention to the notes you're playing and stop trying to copy rhythms. Retarded lesson.
at around 5:14 the drummer appears to get bored and starts playing with his hi-hat, then paul calls him up and starts to come alive. haha! great session.
its unreal how active Paul is... still shredding & making tons of videos for us. its like he's making sure we are fed and getting a good night sleep with happy guitar thoughts. To me he is a firewalker / spiritual guide, legend and guru, elder of wisdom.
this is what makes paul such an awesome guitar player and teacher. Some of the things he talks about are so simple but so effective, and he explains them in such a way that any guitar player with any amount of ability can use them. F*cking legend.
Yes and no. I think he wanted people to get used to the idea of internalizing rhythms (being your own metronome) as opposed to playing to a rhythm track.
having a strong pulse (left leg in video) helps so much for rhythm, regardless of the instrument/style.

why does he say phrase when 99% of pepole say riff
leonituscof2 10 months ago
@leonituscof2 Because he's God. PERIOD.
LLLGuitar 9 months ago
@leonituscof2 Because when he says phrase, he means phrase. A riff is an accompaniment figure. Phrase refers more to lead lines - in short.
WeWillShareAnecdotes 9 months ago
@leonituscof2 Riff = Chords, lick=single notes maybe double stops and phrase can be either both.
