@cantbeatanime17 if piston rings are worn they not are flexible and if you make test put piston to the cylinder and with intact piston rings its not go to the cylinder easily but you need mediate piston rings before piston to go the cylinder. worn rings do not put versus but piston goes to the cylinder easily as if piston rings do not be at all. And if you have 4 stroke and oil ring is worn it can burn oil and can exhaust come blue smoke. Ps. not worry me answer these questions with pleasure:)

how do i know if the valve needs to be replaced?

@cantbeatanime17 if the cylinderhead is out of engine put crc or gasoline to exhaust hole / intake if liquid comes to combustion chamber valve at between it leak and need to do something. If valve is crooked it need change or if valve is only worn a seal surface it can be condense again with it meant liquid used for valves to sealing . valve inner boundary is glossy if it is okay and not leak assuming that valve is not crooked. Sorry my bad english hope you understand something :D
