You won't go wrong with a .357 revolver. It is probably the most versatile handgun in existence, as its power can vary from mild 38 Special target loads up to flame-throwing .357Mag hand loads capable of dropping large animals. I've never had a revolver fail to work in almost 40 years of shooting. Every autopistol I've owned will fail at times. A revolver clears a dud round with another stroke of the trigger. You'll die clearing a dud in an auto as the bad guy shoots you several times.
