Or, in short--he honestly cared about Rome and it's future, but his madness ultimately doomed his actions by proxy as he became more obsessed with art and song and culture than with real, honest affairs of state, such as cost, money, budget, state security in the military sense, and so on. It's a shame, becuase he really COULD have been something good for the Empire....had he not been INSANE.
By all accounts, the only objective conclusions that can be drawn about Nero is that he was clearly insane--even insane men can have redeeming moments of clarity and action. My personal guess, however, is that he already had some sort of mental disorder or three, and while he honestly did care about Rome and it's future, those disorders caused him to effectively focus on art and music as the lynchpins of culture and civilization to the degree that most madmen would probably take it.
Thanks for posting these series episodes! This DVD set is not available in region 1 U.S. format (I don't know why it's not but it should be) - thanks again.
Any decent Emperor could of helped the people in the fire as Nero did, and I respect Nero for that help. But Nero was a horrid Emperor, he was consumed in darkness and took it out on the Empire.
@117425yt There's one problem with your theory - who would finance creating this if they could't sell it and would give it away? What would be the incentive for the people who filmed that movie? Show your appreciation to knowledge by investing into it and buying the movies if you wish!
The story of the fiddle is ultimately irrelevant. How about the facts: he finally killed his mom on the 3rd attempt kicked his 2nd wife to death, but most importantly, especially in the times he lived: he did NOTHING to advance the empire! He as emperor appeared on a public stage! What FN OUTRAGEOUS! He never fought a battle! He made outrageous acquiescence’s to Rome's enemy for no apparent reason! He was a blithering idiot, a pervert 7 a failure beyond the scope history could ever record.
You know, I was raised in the hood in brooklyn. Where people get shot alot and gangs beat each other up. Yet, when i look at the history of rome and many other cultures, it makes the hood today look like a walk in the park. These people had guts. If anything, ancient cultures were more "hood" than those that claim to be "gangster" today.
Anyone who believes that Nero fiddled while Rome burned obvilously doesn't know their history! There is evidence that Nero did everything he could to put out the fires and save lives. I believe that it was the Senate who painted that Nero fiddling while Rome burned.
@Tcassa89 The study of Nero is problematic as some modern historians question the reliability of ancient sources when reporting on Nero's tyrannical acts.
I don't believe that Nero 'lost his mind'. He saw the reality of monarchy and he is said to have admired the Ptolemeys in Egypt and seen that kind of god-king that the people could live through was the way to go. What the Romans held against him is what now we see as mitigating - his artistic interests (he even performed on stage in Greek ) - and the sadism we condemn him for, Romans saw as mitigating that 'Greek effeminacy'.
@azula...what does money (Rome was wealthy and citizens heavily taxed) have to do with a burned city of 1 million? They needed a capitol in which to work asap. On the other hand it was rebuilt better than ever.
@azulalover97 The Roman aristocracy was incredibly rich, your right, but like today elites are they going to spend a dime of their money on something that won't make them more money? Roman aristocracy were only allowed to own farm lands so they wouldn't capitalize on building projects
@greekboy2k I know right! his life was like some sort of soap opera meets horror movie type shit. Some one needs to make a graphic novel style movie of his life.
I lvoe how history always remembers the bad and never truly higlights the good, It is rarely mentioned that Nero tried to help his people during the fire. personally I think His fiddling was his way of crying over the loss of his city.
@greekboy2k Yeah, but he didn't try to stop an army with opera. Like I said, I, personally, like Nero best. I think this is the part in which we're just going to have to agree to disagree.
@greekboy2k Nah, I just find Caligula creepy and insane. Nero, on the other hand, was more like a child with infinite power. Especially after he had Aggrippina killed.
even tho he was brutal i actually found respect for him when he wanted to save rome i remember getting f's for writign papers about him and praising him lol
Well the opening of this episode puts Nero in a much less sensationalistic light. At worst he is overly fond of anything to do with art or the dramatic, which was likely revised as some ancient historians as a sign of instability. I read years ago that Nero did changed the fire code and such a fire never happened again, apart from being sacked by barbarians centuries later.
@3baxcb what about the one in 80 AD during Titus's rain.about Nero's sanity he did kick his wife to death although one thing that annoys me in the "documentary" is that they show nero cutting the genitals off a slave as a sign of his insanity even though treating slaves like that was not unusual or even immoral by Roman standards
The first part has to be the best, i love the Praetorian Guard haha, the stories about the guards you read in books and see in movies are just as if not more important than the Emperors.
how many time have that actor, that plays nero's wife, appeared in this series?like at least 3,the emperor's sister in the fall of rome, and constantine's wife

Well, for one, Nero kicking his wife to death over her comment about dropping a scepter. I can't find any mention of the couple ever arguing over that. Where is the account coming from -- what are the sources? How could she look well mummified later if her face was kicked bloody? It seems more likely that she died in childbirth. Also, supposedly Seneca was not an innocent old man in reality. Nero's madness seems Hollywood-ized and not realistic. Etc.
Nero killing her is one of the possibilities, and this is just dramatization. They just decided to kill her off that way, it doesn't really matter. If this really is Nero-smearing, you should be surprised they didn't accuse Nero for starting the fire.
@Flashstorm100 Where I disagree, is I see a difference between a dramatization and a documentary knowingly lying. Facts being played out, with the gaps filled in as best as possible, I can see. But knowingly making stuff up? And when it comes to whether a man murdered his pregnant wife or not, I think making up an awful story about it is a smear. I know Nero's controversial, but I don't think not blaming him for the fire means that the film is smear-free.
@Flashstorm100 I think they should of left Nero alone altogether who knows how much of his life was just christian propaganda smearing him. He could of been anywhere between a Saint and Satan, we just don't know.
Nero was doing good until that fire, but Rome was built in wood and it was he who rebuilt it in stone. A mad man with a vision that couldn't be supported by the empire (yet). Michael Sheen... made me love a psycho.
@tanlin222 The reconstruction makes sense in our understanding. However - assuming this dramatisation is correct - then flagrancy and extravagance at the expense of proper housing, sanitation and infrastructure was the cause of Nero's downfall.
That is of course giving it a modern perspective and Nero would not have seen it from this angle.
bs, its proven that nero wasnt mad, neither that bad. Roman aristocrats and senate later presented him like this to justify his deposement, the real reason was neros tax policy favored the poor and him spending tremendus money for building theatres, hippodromes, temples and many more.
It took me all of 15 seconds to search the title of this video and get directed to a wiki page of 'a 2006 BBC One docudrama series, with each episode looking at a different key turning point in the history of the Roman Empire.' All this time you spent bleeding self righteousness over a harmless comment has been wasted. You act as if I insulted your dead mum or something. I only thought I could chide you into some self-reliance, but your blinders seem to be firmly in place. A thousand pardons.
@HogwartsCastle Well it's been five days and I'm the best you've got so far so your google defense is rubbish. A few keystrokes would have sufficed. Next, it's a history program so clearly it's educational on some level. "Is this like...educational?" doesn't get more adolescent than that. 'Adolescent-style' denotes mentality not age, so your ageism claim is also in the bin. I failed to be humorous because your tissue paper skin is unable to deflect a minor jab of sarcasm.
@HogwartsCastle Well then, I'm sure someone as well versed and resourceful as yourself would have had no trouble doing a light google search to answer all queries on the matter. Rather than rely on ambiguous adolescent-style questions that pin a bullseye on your back. Besides, I was trying to be humorous not insulting, I contend that you're being hyper-defensive.
@HogwartsCastle No it's a soap opera from the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Time to start spending less time on the quidditch pitch, and a bit more in the library.
Because that's what Fox News tells you, because they want to get back into power so they can steal more wealth from middle class people and give it to their rich friends.
@HoundofOdin That few days ago when I kept explaining and explaining and explaining to you how bad Nero was, and then I found out that all I'm doing is helping you fined out how to top my argument whith a superior answere.
@HoundofOdin Lets say you're bugs bunny and I am daffy duck and we are competeing in a theatre. I spring in first, do a tap dance, cartwheel, backflip, juggle some expensive china, dive into a glass of water, and then slide in front of the stage and pose to the audiance. The result, crickets. You come along and the audiance applauds to you before you even start eating you're carrot. That's why you win.
@HoundofOdin =O......how DARE you insult your MASTER, you're SAVIOR, you're DICKTATOR!!!!! JEZUZ WILL SEE YOU IN HELL FOR THAT!!!! YOU WILL BE TIED UP, FLOGGED, RAPED WITH A CACTUS HEAD, CASTRATED BY MAD DOGS, AND SERVED ALIVE AS DINNER FOR HITLER IN HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You think that's bad? You haven't heard half the shit I have said about that dead Jewish cultist bastard. I would rip out his heart, take a bite, spit it in his face, and then shove it so far up his as he would find out what his shit tastes like.
I had a four way with Jesus's corpse, Satan, and the "Virgin" Mary. Jokes on the Christians, that is one freaky bitch. Satan's dick is three feet long and covered in venomous spines that shoot acid and she took the whole thing. In her ass.
@HoundofOdin you know what? This is starting to become a Nostalgic critic vs Angry video game nerd rip-off what we are doing here. I'm sorry for starting these negative comments on you. We both have opinions, even though you're better at arguing and that you're opinion on Nero is correct. We have different opinions.
Tony Blair just as bad a Nero and he is roaming around when he should be in prison. Making sheds loads of money whilst the soldiers he sent into combat fight and die for NOTHING!! for what? a medievil bunch of muslims who do not want our help! I hate Bliar!! So so much now.
sorry if I took this too seriously, I just think Nero is the Antichrist. I am also not blaiming the Italians, I think they are an improvement to their Roman ansestors, and I am not a big fan of the Asterix & Obelix comics since they take plase before the birth of Jesus.
@TheHinn180 You mean joke as in emperor Nero is actually a nice guy as oppose to what I said ealier? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! And what I mean about asterix and obelix tacking plase before the birth of Christ is that they are too early to butcher the #### out of Nero! I'm not angry about you asking me, but I am not joking around, Nero IS the son of the devil.
Whatever... Hail Adolf Hitler for wiping out those putrid Jews, yippie! Bless Mao for starving his people, horray! Hail Stalin for sacrificing millions, bravo! Hail Bin Laden for blowing up the world trade center, congradulations! Shall I go on?...
Nero was a great man. Poet, artist, ruler, foe of all things Christian. You need to take that dead Jewish cult leader's dick out of your ass and think for yourself.
@HoundofOdin I was being sarcastic... If Nero is a wonderfull person, all including Satan are wonderfull people. I hate Hitler and loved seeing him get shot down in inglorious bastards, so you get that skeletilysed Christian raping tyrant's tentikles out of your blood vessels and kick that Nero moron in the balls.
@Dleifrag100 If it wasn't for the anchient Romans, Christianity would not go manipulating everyone. I am greatfull that everyone has their own beleif, I'm ok even with satanists, if they beleive they are going to hell when they die, I ask any one why you should blame them, they think hell is good, I can not complain.
@Dleifrag100 Nero has no religion (I am also just fine with people who don't have a religion, no joke, alot of my friends arn't Christian) and he sticks the finger at the Greek gods, saying that he and only he is god him self. That means that he would do the exact same tourterous thing to all other religeons, just for fun.
@HoundofOdin That was the only good thing about him, had he succeeded in eradicating the Christian plague then the Library of Alexandria would have survived and we would be further along in civilization today.
before Nero, Christians were peasefull people and it was after Nero's death the Romans decided to join christianety and wreck it up into their own thilth.
So as a conclusion, DAMN ANCHIENT ROMANS TO THE ABYSS!!!!!!!!!!!
Nero IS the 1st plase most horrid monster ever. Hitler put him self and his familie out of their misery in the end of the war and Stalin starved his people to death because of no other choice. Nero, on the other hand,... #### it, HE'S 666, ANTICHRIST, DEVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ahh, well, we get to the crux of the situation. Your agenda and your colors are flying high. I have no further questions. We could have had an intelligent, two-way conversation but you just outed yourself and your athiest agenda, thus, the attempt to make the monster Nero a misunderstood, truly nice guy. Bu-bye.
Next thing you know there will be films trying to glamorize what Hitler did, and trying to endear him to us. I don't mind watching this just for the sheer entertainment value of it, but it is far from the truth. Nero was the of the 3 most evil characters in history. Modern film won't change that.
And THAT'S why monarchy fails ladies and gentlemen

MICHAEL SHEEN!!!! OMG!! ARO VOLTURI!!
DaLittleHorror 1 year ago
bs, its proven that nero wasnt mad, neither that bad. Roman aristocrats and senate later presented him like this to justify his deposement, the real reason was neros tax policy favored the poor and him spending tremendus money for building theatres, hippodromes, temples and many more.
dimalex8 1 year ago
p.s. bad selection of actor Nero had light blond hair, light beard around his chin and weak blue eyes.

It were better to have had the advice of Ancient Historians
leopictor 1 year ago
@HogwartsCastle Well it's been five days and I'm the best you've got so far so your google defense is rubbish. A few keystrokes would have sufficed. Next, it's a history program so clearly it's educational on some level. "Is this like...educational?" doesn't get more adolescent than that. 'Adolescent-style' denotes mentality not age, so your ageism claim is also in the bin. I failed to be humorous because your tissue paper skin is unable to deflect a minor jab of sarcasm.
davi1614 1 year ago
@HogwartsCastle Well then, I'm sure someone as well versed and resourceful as yourself would have had no trouble doing a light google search to answer all queries on the matter. Rather than rely on ambiguous adolescent-style questions that pin a bullseye on your back. Besides, I was trying to be humorous not insulting, I contend that you're being hyper-defensive.
davi1614 1 year ago
@HogwartsCastle No it's a soap opera from the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Time to start spending less time on the quidditch pitch, and a bit more in the library.

Because that's what Fox News tells you, because they want to get back into power so they can steal more wealth from middle class people and give it to their rich friends.

@HoundofOdin to make it short, you win! I will leave you alone.
Dleifrag100 1 year ago
I win? We were competeing? When the fuck did that happen?
HoundofOdin 1 year ago
@HoundofOdin That few days ago when I kept explaining and explaining and explaining to you how bad Nero was, and then I found out that all I'm doing is helping you fined out how to top my argument whith a superior answere.
Dleifrag100 1 year ago
@HoundofOdin Lets say you're bugs bunny and I am daffy duck and we are competeing in a theatre. I spring in first, do a tap dance, cartwheel, backflip, juggle some expensive china, dive into a glass of water, and then slide in front of the stage and pose to the audiance. The result, crickets. You come along and the audiance applauds to you before you even start eating you're carrot. That's why you win.

XtremeDreamerX 1 year ago
You think that's bad? You haven't heard half the shit I have said about that dead Jewish cultist bastard. I would rip out his heart, take a bite, spit it in his face, and then shove it so far up his as he would find out what his shit tastes like.
HoundofOdin 1 year ago
@HoundofOdin I was on the edge of my seat and then disappointment. =\
XtremeDreamerX 1 year ago
I had a four way with Jesus's corpse, Satan, and the "Virgin" Mary. Jokes on the Christians, that is one freaky bitch. Satan's dick is three feet long and covered in venomous spines that shoot acid and she took the whole thing. In her ass.
HoundofOdin 1 year ago
@HoundofOdin you know what? This is starting to become a Nostalgic critic vs Angry video game nerd rip-off what we are doing here. I'm sorry for starting these negative comments on you. We both have opinions, even though you're better at arguing and that you're opinion on Nero is correct. We have different opinions.
Dleifrag100 1 year ago
They filmed this way too much like an action movie. This would be a lot less cheesy without the freeze shots.

Tony Blair just as bad a Nero and he is roaming around when he should be in prison. Making sheds loads of money whilst the soldiers he sent into combat fight and die for NOTHING!! for what? a medievil bunch of muslims who do not want our help! I hate Bliar!! So so much now.

HouseofOden;
sorry if I took this too seriously, I just think Nero is the Antichrist. I am also not blaiming the Italians, I think they are an improvement to their Roman ansestors, and I am not a big fan of the Asterix & Obelix comics since they take plase before the birth of Jesus.

TheHinn180 1 year ago
@TheHinn180 You mean joke as in emperor Nero is actually a nice guy as oppose to what I said ealier? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!! And what I mean about asterix and obelix tacking plase before the birth of Christ is that they are too early to butcher the #### out of Nero! I'm not angry about you asking me, but I am not joking around, Nero IS the son of the devil.

Nero fought against the Christian plague, so I think he needs a holiday. Hail Nero!

Nero was a great man. Poet, artist, ruler, foe of all things Christian. You need to take that dead Jewish cult leader's dick out of your ass and think for yourself.
HoundofOdin 1 year ago
@HoundofOdin I was being sarcastic... If Nero is a wonderfull person, all including Satan are wonderfull people. I hate Hitler and loved seeing him get shot down in inglorious bastards, so you get that skeletilysed Christian raping tyrant's tentikles out of your blood vessels and kick that Nero moron in the balls.
Dleifrag100 1 year ago
@Dleifrag100 If it wasn't for the anchient Romans, Christianity would not go manipulating everyone. I am greatfull that everyone has their own beleif, I'm ok even with satanists, if they beleive they are going to hell when they die, I ask any one why you should blame them, they think hell is good, I can not complain.
Dleifrag100 1 year ago
@Dleifrag100 Nero has no religion (I am also just fine with people who don't have a religion, no joke, alot of my friends arn't Christian) and he sticks the finger at the Greek gods, saying that he and only he is god him self. That means that he would do the exact same tourterous thing to all other religeons, just for fun.
Dleifrag100 1 year ago
@Dleifrag100 I just wish they made a god of war 4 when Kratos grindes Nero into diareeha.
Dleifrag100 1 year ago
@HoundofOdin That was the only good thing about him, had he succeeded in eradicating the Christian plague then the Library of Alexandria would have survived and we would be further along in civilization today.

"HoundofOden",
before Nero, Christians were peasefull people and it was after Nero's death the Romans decided to join christianety and wreck it up into their own thilth.

Dleifrag100 1 year ago

AlexOfMacedonAOMH 1 year ago
Ahh, well, we get to the crux of the situation. Your agenda and your colors are flying high. I have no further questions. We could have had an intelligent, two-way conversation but you just outed yourself and your athiest agenda, thus, the attempt to make the monster Nero a misunderstood, truly nice guy. Bu-bye.
Bombeni 1 year ago
Next thing you know there will be films trying to glamorize what Hitler did, and trying to endear him to us. I don't mind watching this just for the sheer entertainment value of it, but it is far from the truth. Nero was the of the 3 most evil characters in history. Modern film won't change that.
