All CCD and CMOS are infrared sensitive, and that degrades the image quality because it causes glare and washed out colours. So most cameras have an IR-filter behind the main lens. It is just a coated piece of glass and you can see it because it often has a reddish or greenish reflection.
By the way, that filter can be removed and you can use IR leds as illumination for the camera.
