@Vovk3 There was no thing such as a native religion in ancient Rome during the imperial years (compared to an alien one)...the Romans adopted the Greek gods and during the time of their expansion foreign gods (such as the egyptian god of Isis or Zarathustra-the sun god or persia) were adopted in their Pantheon...about the matter of personal issues you refer to tell me one leader who doesn't use the power of religion on behalf of his own interests...
Buddy, you don't get it. The Roman religion was to worship gods they recognized as powerful. If there was an Etruscan god who was deemed worthy of worship by them, they'd make a place for it. A particular set of gods doesn't necessarily make a religion. How gods are viewed does make a religion.
A leader who doesn't use religion for his own interests? Where did I imply that here wasn't one?
@Vovk3 Surely not for Rome of the imperial years...but the Roman world in which Constantine lived was a world in decline economically in bad shape, military disorganized, with many civil wars and problems regarding the security of it's borders...what Constantine tried to do was to reorganize the empire by all means (military, trade etc) on a more homogenous base that thought it could be carried through a new thriving power which in his mind was christianity...anyway history proved him right...
@BLeedHem You believe in a magical invisable man, and anything that can't be explained must have come from god, your pathetic. lol and the devil, you really must be into to make belief fairy tales.

@Skirata95 No because of intolerant atheists who spread hate towards religious people they never even met. Look at almost any atheist video, you'll soon come to the same conclusion. They say religious people spread hate but it is quite apparent that these hypocrites are the first to tolerate intolerance by not giving any respect to people who believe in God. That's their idea of an 'enlightenment', mock religion and insult the believers until they reject God and join their hateful movement.
What a blow looking at Roman army during the late empire, its way of fighting is scandalous, nothing to do with previous formations and equipment...we praise Constantine 'cause of his exploit but not much time later all is gone to hell, of course!
the Roman army at this point had largely slowed down on the discipline and fixed formations, the armor is different aswell. The metal tunica the legionaries were equipped with had been replaed with leather or mail beacuse it was too expensive, the armies consisted in large parts of Barbarians, Mercenaries and Germans who served Rome, as such. Their armies fought much like as they did, this made it easier and cheaper to recruit bigger armies
You are probably right, but i dont believe the praetorian cohort would be equipped like that, its just like they are missing some aspects of the army, there seems to be no tactic at all
The Praetorian Guard had 2 sets of Uniforms, 1 for ceremonial and guard duty, and a Military field uniform. But the Guard rarely saw combat during their existence except during Otho, Probus and under Maxentius reign.
Regarding their uniforms, the ceremonial ones were very similar to the typichal Roman Centurion, except that the Head plume was pointer straight backwards.
Their field uniform was very much the same as the normal legionaries, but their shields had a scorpion or a moon as symbol
And I who thought they were the emperors and the citys bodyguard...
Nevertheless i still find it kinda hard to believe that the core of the roman army would abandon the traditional shield (im not talking about the auxillaries here). And the army are just charging ahead with no apparent tactic or formation, not really that kind of descendants i would believe Caesar, Scipio, Sulla and Pompey would have created..
no you were totally right, they were the emperors personal guard, but an unreliable sort indeed. Regarding the tactics they used in the movie, well at this point like I said. The Roman army had been increased in size, it had lost alot of quality as you can see in the equipment compared to the former units. Aswell as the tactics, their former training was very tough and required discipline. To drill mass armies, the discipline and training was relaxed, and cheaper equipment was used.
actually by this time in history most emperors had seen the political power of the praetorian guard and had it disbanded. Also this was about the time when Lorica Segmentata went out of use and chain and scale mail took over. This documentary is surprisingly accurate like how the Comitatenses (constantines new GI unit since the Legionaire) had iron darts on their shields that they could throw.
There is one thing in your comment I don't understand. Why did the Lorica Segmentata go out of use? Rust, maintenance issues, lack of sufficient metal? What?
the barbarians were afraid of magical signs of power..the X and P used by the roman catholic church even today are actually ancient RUNE symbols the X is gefu means gift the P is wunjo the J and N are silent its pronouced phonetically WOOOOOOOOOO like the howl of a wolf animal joy
they actually mean sex the gift of joy
however together superimposed they from the CALC symbol an upside down fork the sign OF DEATH
Learn history, it is not the same army, tactics or uniforms in the Republican Rome than in the late Imperial Rome. They changed. This BBC documentary was supported and approved by historians experts on this period of the Roman Empire.
@carlosepech And here i was thikning that the first europeans to have edge cutting swords were the franks, i pictured more of an impaling contest than a head/limbs cutting spree...
of course not man i don tknow why its shown in this way, but i think this documental had to be made in Latin or at least in italiana, not in a barabaric language like english
@2436st English is part of the Anglo-Saxon languages, or Germanic; It is most closley related to Dutch, German and slightly to it's Scandanavian relatives. However, as English evolved, it began to encorporate words from Latin, which is why the average English-Speaker will find himself understanding many words and phrases in French, Spanish and Italian.
English is a Germanic language. Almost all European languages have a great many elements of latin. It may be said it was based on latin (im not sure), but it is a germanic language and i would say based on the language of the ancient Germanic tribes much more then latin.
Spanish Portuguese, French and Italian etc. are latin languages.
@2436st English is, at it's core, a Germanic language based on the language of the Anglo-Saxons. The large amount of Latin vocabulary in English comes from the Norman and French ruling class of England from 1066 to the 1500s. They're essentially loanwords
@2436st English is not a romance/neo-latin language. It is a west germanic language with some influences of norman (which is a romance language). But it remains a germanic one.
The cycle of hatred continues...would be that you pursued the wisdom that Christ taught with the same fervor that you condemn those who choose to follow a different path.
If Cristianity is freedom from sin, then why God allowed mankind to live in sin for thousands of years? Why Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Persians lived in sin? Why not come to this earth and save our lives before that?
How could He be so cruel and condemn all these people to sin for so long?
I pay homage to all the gods, as my ancestors did. Christianity is slavery, paganism is knowledge and freedom. Constantine The Worst, is the biggest traitor that Rome ever had. Ego deos et deas amo. Ego id dixi.
wrong... that's what people has done, God has never supported these greedy causes of men. Christianity has done far more than you know for mankind. I am proud to say I am a christian and will be one even after I die. Just because some people do evil in the name of their version of God that won't make me turn from what Jesus truly taught in His Word.
Greco-Roman religions never lasted that long. The Greeks pretty much abandoned their religion after the Peloponnesian war, whose privations led the Greeks to abandon their religion. The Romans abandoned theirs sometime around the late republic. The Greco-Roman gods continued to be worshipped on an official level, but it ceased to be a viable religion standing on its own feet.
The Marxism of Political Correctness taught in our schools, the Media's conditioning of political correctness, and the push for broad unfettered multiculturalism has served to starve our sense of national identity and to fear speaking the truth lest we offend or evoke conflict. It's time to stand tall, strong, and reject the policies and politics of liberalism and defend our democracy.
Anyone notice the splendid military tactics of earlier Roman went out the window in the fight scenes in this vid. Seems they went backwards the more time went forward. Just a group of different Barbarians badly lead by desperate hypocrits like Constantine where desperate lives replaced sensible tactics and creative generals of old
Do take into account however that the classical legions were catered to fighting an enemy army that was deployed in battle formations (usually armies of the hellenistic kingdoms or the carthaginians). The barbarian forces would fight in much looser formations and wouldnt necessarily all deploy for a big decisive battle.
The later roman empire had to adapt, and more mobile armies and looser formations were partly a necessity. However i admit that discipline wasnt as high in late antiquity.
according to achilles... he would rather be a slave or servant on earth than be a king or lord of hell or hades (elysian fields.. really?)...
i respect any kind of religion but please don't compare religion.. they have their own structure, ritual and bases respectable to other points of view..
religion helps lighten up the soul and make things clear..
there's a big difference between religion and fanatic belief..
hitler's use of christianity and osama bin laden's fanatic belief for example
Well that quote is from the Odyssey which did not have the Elysian fields. In Homer the Underworld is just a dark depressing place, not really bad, but not good either.
remeber.. no empire will last forever.. sooner or later every empire regardless of how powerful and stable it is.. will just fall.. the only thing that is left is whats the empire's biggest contribution to the world that will make it immortal.. is it paganism like jupiter (???).. or its architecture, its beauty and political setting that some of our current government follow today..
if u worship mars, that means u like war and u always go to war.. zeus.. i like thunderbolt, plz shoot me...
the period where constantine live was very bloody period and killing and slicing someone else throat off is just normal.. (gladiator and collesium)..
sure any emperor or the boss incharge of as society always have an agenda, in a period like that, who blames them...
Constantine maybe a traitor in rome in the old world but he is a modern molder of our society today.. thing might have gone worse and u might never been born and things history just f**k up..
lets say lke this, God works in a mysterious way.. he even chose constantine (a greedy and ambitious emperor) to end the early christians suffering..
even in the fall of rome, the goths and visigoths were christians to and sometimes they dedicate their life to got.. the plundger the pagans more than the christians.. it was a bloody world and bloody period constantine live.. but like the early chinese emperor.. 1 empire, 1 stability, "all under heaven"..
i got a question... if constantine didn't conquer the east empire of rome.. then what would our world be like today??
would we reach the rennasaince period and give birth to intelligent people like galeleo or michael angelo.. or just a crap politic period.. paganism is unstable, undirect and have no foundation as strong as christianity.. islam on the other hand is becoming very strong, much that it can rival christianity..

Five Stars Great Series

I think Athena is an absolute babe...so I built a 20 foot statue of her to worship in my front garden.

according to achilles... he would rather be a slave or servant on earth than be a king or lord of hell or hades (elysian fields.. really?)...
i respect any kind of religion but please don't compare religion.. they have their own structure, ritual and bases respectable to other points of view..
religion helps lighten up the soul and make things clear..
there's a big difference between religion and fanatic belief..
hitler's use of christianity and osama bin laden's fanatic belief for example

Well that quote is from the Odyssey which did not have the Elysian fields. In Homer the Underworld is just a dark depressing place, not really bad, but not good either.

hey man.. its ok.. u pay homage to hades.. its ok unless ur joking..
but if u start to compare jupiter or hades to GOD.. man, its like moses and the pharoah wrath of GOD time..
people say this and that is more powerful than GOD except allah who is also contemporary name of GOD and buddha w/c symbolizes GOD's unending love..
in christian belief hades means hell.. cerberus is "leviathan" and charon is death.. achilles went to hades and he didn't like that place

remeber.. no empire will last forever.. sooner or later every empire regardless of how powerful and stable it is.. will just fall.. the only thing that is left is whats the empire's biggest contribution to the world that will make it immortal.. is it paganism like jupiter (???).. or its architecture, its beauty and political setting that some of our current government follow today..
if u worship mars, that means u like war and u always go to war.. zeus.. i like thunderbolt, plz shoot me...

the period where constantine live was very bloody period and killing and slicing someone else throat off is just normal..
Webnet123 3 years ago
lets say lke this, God works in a mysterious way.. he even chose constantine (a greedy and ambitious emperor) to end the early christians suffering..
even in the fall of rome, the goths and visigoths were christians to and sometimes they dedicate their life to got.. the plundger the pagans more than the christians.. it was a bloody world and bloody period constantine live.. but like the early chinese emperor.. 1 empire, 1 stability, "all under heaven"..
Webnet123 3 years ago
i got a question... if constantine didn't conquer the east empire of rome.. then what would our world be like today??
would we reach the rennasaince period and give birth to intelligent people like galeleo or michael angelo.. or just a crap politic period.. paganism is unstable, undirect and have no foundation as strong as christianity.. islam on the other hand is becoming very strong, much that it can rival christianity..

And what would Jesus do? Would he really want the message of God to be spread through warfare and blood shed?
