  • I am a lifeguard too and this is a joke

  • I am a lifeguard / Leisure Manager / RLSS Trainer Assessor.

Suspected spinal injuries and exactly what they are known as - SUSPECTED.

If someone's head is underwater, they are NOT BREATHING.

Priorities for treatment are as follows:

    1. Breathing

    2. Suspected Spinal Injury

    3. Bleeding

    4. Bones/Burns

Naturally if you have an arterial bleed, it pushes up in the priorities, but generally the above is right.

Choose life over death - Breathing over spinal.

  • Critics of this clip should check out the real life rescue in "Bondi Beach rescue." In that clip there are REAL lifeguards put under REAL pressure, and making some pretty dreadful mistakes with an unconscious, non-breathing casualty with no pulse. But here's the rub - they save the boy's life. Go figure.

  • 1337tiful - not only did they SEE what happened, they videod it. Clearly no spinal.

  • WTF..?

Why would you even pull him out of the water?!

  • ale akcja ratownicza, patrzeć nie mogę..............

  • aww, I was hoping this would be funny.

  • yes let put his head in the water and turn on an AED lol this fail

  • I kinda like this video! :P Its accualty puts down a real situation. I mean your at a beach, you have lifeguards and First Aid, Drunk guy enters water, lifeguard saves, drunk guy goes uncouncious non-breathing, CPR done..!!

    I like, Real-Life scneraio..

  • Fake lol..

"All units we have a rescue"? lmao!

  • @GhostShell2007 lmfaoo!

  • @GhostShell2007 Yes, it was staged for a video.. as the description states >.> However, what is wrong with that statement? In a park with more than just lifeguards, aka park rangers and others staff that needs to be informed of a rescue, what else would be a proper statement? "All [park name] units, we have a [activity] off of [stand]" Seems logical to me.

  • in my experience its a lot easier to sit back watch a video and comment on lifeguard flaws than to do the work your self. many people would be amazed with how many things they get wrong in any scenario. We all have our own protocol and our own reasons behind it. Criticism seems to come far to easy some times.

  • ya lots of stuff wrong with this vid

  • can anybody says how much time a victim can survive underwater even waters can enter in there total body

  • @ashishkumarsingh007 The current widely-accepted standard is that the search for a victim who has been submerged for less than an hour is considered a rescue; after an hour, it is considered a recovery. The longest documented time someone has been submerged and lived is 46 minutes.

  • wow these lifeguards have done so many things wrong lol

  • Paaa!!!

  • FAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The guy write on comments that:

"This was made in summer 06, It was for a final in my mass media class. we had to tell a story with 1 shot... FUN :D "

And you say it's fake???? What do you want pal, to drown people for you to give exams with real victims???

  • I hate the wrong information!! In this case the author MUST write on description this :

    LIFEGUARD SIMULATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hahahaha thats entertaining :D

  • I went to atlantic city. This jerk kept going too far and the lifeguards took there boat out twice. it was sunny and the waves were huge; Then a big wave hit the boat and the lifeguards started drowning. Then 10 lifeguards came and rescued those 2 and the boy LOL.

  • jajaja.. es cualquiera !! ..

no pueden cuidar ni un charquito de agua.

  • You always suspect and take procedures of a spinal injury if you did not see what happened

  • correct!

  • @1337tiful You and the six people that "thumbed" this comment up are incorrect. I am a lifeguard... LIFE or LIMB. What is protecting the spine going to do if the person ends up dead. I am assuming you are/were Red Cross certified. People have died from procedures in your comment.

  • @1337tiful They saw what happened.

  • um no thats not true

u NEVER suspect a spinal injury, LIFE oover LIMBS

  • if they are unconscious and you didnt see it happen, then you have to. Only in an unsafe situation do you risk life over limb

  • @capsound123 sooooo wrong. You always suspect spinal. Only if it becomes unsafe for the victim or yourself do you resort to life over limb. Until then, you want to keep their limbs.

  • That lifeguard sucks at butterfly stroke.

  • shes dolphining, its a rescue procedure used in shallow water faster than swimming......

  • mannn

    I tough it was real!

  • wow this is an insulting joke....

  • That "drunk" guy made it pretty far out

  • from my understanding this is a recreation for a school project where accuracy of lifesaving procedures is not needed but exaggerated for dramatic effect. you can CPR is not actually administered thus the situation was simulated.

  • fake

  • LAME!

  • Wow, a lot of these lifeguard videos on youtube, even the serious ones, show very flawed procedures and numerous mistakes. This video is no exception.

  • wwoow. first of all you should have swam out with a starting butterfly stroke... you should have approached with a rear grip because when a guest is suspected to be under the influence they can get rowdy. second of all CPR should be performed 125 feet away from the water. not right next to the tide lines. backboard wasnt needed. and carrying out of water was careless. please dont work at my waterpark :X

  • These responses are stupid, you can't even tell if they checked for an obstructed airway...which they shouldn't have to to begin with if the first 2 rescue breaths went in. CPR has a higher than 1% of revival if done correctly..though it looked like you had an AED there? You don't need a backboard unless you're suspicious of head or neck injury. Yeah, it wasn't the most accurate video but for a bunch of kids messing around it wasn't bad, you probably shouldn't expect Red Cross quality cinema.

  • For open water and certain waterpark settings, depending on who you're certified under it is recommended that you use a back board to remove the guest even if you do not suspect a spinal. In such a situation you would not strap the guest to the board or use the head blocks though.

However for the purposes of this video I'm going to assume accuracy was not their first priority, doing their school project was.

  • CPR has like a 1% chance or reviving the patron, all it does is attempt to continue pumping blood.

  • I heard it was 2%-5% and that's only if the patron has no pulse, in other words is clinically dead.

  • Not always. A major factor is the victims age. With an adult the chances of revival are slim to none. But for a child or infant, the chances of revival can actually be fair. Which is why for a child or infant 5 cycles (2 mins) of CPR should be preformed before calling 911 if you are alone and must leave the area. And it's not just about pumping blood. CPR keeps vital organs and the brain alive because of oxygenated blood, simply having blood flow wouldn't do much if its not oxygenated.

  • Finally a correct answer!

  • TIS SHIT WAS A HOT MESS

  • so may things wrong with this video! if your going to do it, make sure you do everything the RIGHT way...like checking for spontaneous breathing..and checking for an obstructed airway...and look like you know what your doing..

  • Guys It wasn't correct why did u put the victims head in the water after the rescue?

  • when you put the victim down for cpr it helps not to put their head in the water.

  • i remember watching the same video in media class when i was in high school. Bunch of my friends did vids.

  • dude CPR ratio now is 30:2 not 15:2

  • This video was done 2 years ago...

  • @dangins89 so wuz ur comment

  • @kibal4ish 15:2 is only for little kids

  • so this is an actual reality video. its not a set up? am i correct?

  • it is a set up.

if it was real they did a horrible job as the lifeguard.

  • Nawnawnaw,

lots of things wrong with this :/

Good for a high school class, though.

    I guess.

  • good although wheres the backboard?

  • for waterfront lifeguarding, there is no backboard used.

  • there...is no backboard.

    what are you talking about?

  • What?

  • @wowow545d For Red Cross Waterfront lifeguarding, the backboard would not be used in this situation. I know there's different agencies(Ellis, YMCA, etc.) that may have different techniques, but the reason why there isn't a backboard used is because there was not a spinal injury suspected. If there was, they would have had a group of guards go in and strap him in first.

  • Good video...just thought it was kind of funny how she was doing the butterfly to rescue the victim, lol.

  • maybe butterfly is her strongest stroke?

  • highschool but yeah :P

  • ok i just realized this was scripted for a college assignment. how disappointing. pretty decent acting though

  • So fake ... That guy would've been dead with their incredibly slow reaction time.

  • the reality is unless ur in a pool or a good swimmer in a rip current ur probs gonna be dead if u start drowning anyway and have to be recovered by a LG. I think the lifeguards did well in this educational video. You should remember that it isnt real life anyway so they wouldnt be totally belting it.

  • i hope these guys dont have to actually save anyone, the victim would be screwed

  • lol. no pulse recovery? only a 4% chance of that w/o an AED. try again.

  • Why did they put him right by the water?

  • its a fake lol

    its just a trainning

  • Also, you should bring the victim on to dry sand...if he is in full arrest the paramedics will need to hook up a monitor..they aren't going to do it so close to the water!

  • I wonder if this video is real...how come the secondary guards didn't take their cans? Why did the secondary swimmer wade out...has he never heard of "dolphining"? If the guy went unconscious it probably wasn't from drowning...

  • dude, dolphining is not used by any competent lifeguard!!

its a waste of power!! Kraul or breast stroke is the ting to do

  • since you guys are talking about this can anyone tell what kind swiming styles you need to know to become a lifeguard or anything at all i need to know or what kind of trainig to get i would apriciate any info.

  • Depends which country...

    Definitely Breaststroke and Crawl!

In Germany Backstroke without using the arms.

Butterfly is a waste of energy, as is crawl or breaststorke with head out of the water.

  • Thank you!

  • but crawl or breaststroke with head out of the water is essentially for the LG to see and reassure the casualty

  • the chest compressions are not deep enough and too fast. they dont look real.

  • oh yeah, so they should do real chest compressions on a live person should they? thatl help...

  • The victim seemed to be swimming strongly when the first lifeguard went out to "save" him. Weird.

  • whyyyyy would you lay his head near the water?? lol

  • Correction Colin RESCUES Mike

  • Have you guys seen the 'Colin Versus Mike' video on here? what do you think of it?

  • She was probably porpoising, correct me if i'm wrong guys.

  • Haha, it looks like the LG is swimming fly toward the start of her swim.

  • Speaking as a lifeguard, it's a nice training video. As a video maker, a one take, one scene story is tough.

  • yes dixynormous1 is correct, it was for a project. The person was not actually drunk. Also, cymbalhoss, the staff at this particular lake are very well trained and had other guards watching the water and maintaining the first-aid station :) so what do you guys think about the video its self, my assignment was to tell a story using a single shot

    -Dan

(also, any suggestions/requests for future videos?)

  • Yer mate just upload what you can it would be good to see some more decent raining vids on this site. :D Can I also suggest you try out:- [Pm me for site]there is forums on it and we have a few members from your side of the Atlantic aswell. (Sorry had to put spacesin it or im not allowed to post the comment

  • @dangins89 cool project

  • plus if al guards are on scene who is watching the kids playing marco polo

  • It's an inkling that you get, they probably smelt it too, don't forget they may ahve seen him staggering behind the camera. This looks like a setup anyway, like the guy said it was for his video project.

  • how did the life guards know if he had been drinking?

  • you learn to read peoples body laguage on the job
