  • if all 4 speakers are 8 ohms and the cab is 8 ohm mono what is the ohms if you want to plug in stereo ?

  • Another helpful video. Thanks!

The only thing I did not hear that needs to said is always "tighten the speaker in an X or star pattern to prevent warpage of the speaker basket-especially if you just happened to get them to tight (not reccomended!)..

  • @tourkalvanosporos Marshall does use V-30's still to date on certain cabs and mixing speakers can produce a wicked tone that will make your toes curl.

  • @FenrirLupus playing shows will do tht to ya hahahaha

  • im 15 and just blew a speaker in my 4x12, if you have one of those celestions laying around you should send me one lol :)

  • Thanks for the video Tone King! I just did the swap routine with my 1936 cab and went with an Eminence Governor and a Wizard. The cab now sounds way better and your video made the install a breeze. Thanks again!

  • @ tourkalvanosporos

Dude, you can use any speakers with any amp, rating/impedance permitting. There is no "Marshall speaker" that you *must* use.

It will not sound "bad" from frequencies getting "mixed up" using different speaker/amp combinations.

  • 1:50 "EEEERRRRRRAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

  • i wuld of liked to hear a before and after to see and hear the difference on what just changing the 12 inch speakers can do

  • Not all v30's are imported, I have 1 that states right on the speaker Leads,Great Britian Made in U.K. and it is much more valuable than the import's. I don't know why somebody would assume that it's made in england unless it state's it on the speaker. My greenback clearlyl state's made in China. Good Tip I guess for the Youngsters

  • @glassbottleblues Celestion moved production to China in 2003 for the sake of the almighty dollar and yes quality has suffered. Anything made before that date is UK heaven. Nothing wrong with a good ol Eminence now a day

  • VERY GENTILLY!!!!!!!! XDD

  • those new speakers look awesome

  • You can take the handles off and push the back right off.

  • gen-tal-e

  • I'd love to hear how it sounds!

  • Awesome Tutorial. Thanks!

  • My tone is awesome at low volumes, but when I crank it, the quality of tone goes away very quickly. Do you think this is because of the speakers in my cab? I know its not my amp head or guitar.

  • ToneKing, I agree with NewOscarGuy! I'm VERY curious about the difference in tone! Could you do it once more but with a before/after comparisson? I have a cab similar to this and was thinking about Gouverner to put in it.

  • wish I had a marshall cab floating around. :P

  • used to have that same drill! it died on me last year though :(

  • Hi TTK!!!, what do you think about the governor/wizard mix for a 2x12 cab, with a Randall RH150G3 Plus?, Thanks!

  • Holy crap! Is that a ninja turtle blanket???

  • @GuitarBrotha haha ... yes it is. It belongs to one of the tone kids ;-)

  • @lmsjr Tone king are you rich?

  • Wait - wrong one

  • Hey that cab looks familiar-I could swear I've seen it somewhere before!! LOL

  • i find this very helpful. i just bought an engl head but i can't afford a decent cabinet so i'll be building my own cab enclosure and put eminence speakers in. this clarified everything i wasn't sure of. thanks man.

  • very well done video very imformative as well great vid rock on ttk

  • Awesome video, as usual, TK!

Now lemme take those "old" speakers off your hands! LOL

    Take care, bro! \m/

  • Great video!!!

Maybe you could add to it? like a before and after comparison just so everyone could hear the difference in tone. You should also try a Governor with the Classic Lead 80, I have a Eminence Redfang paired with a Classic Lead 80 and it sounds great.

  • ive replaced speakers in many different amps and i must say ive never seen such a great walkthrough of how to do it. i think your going to put me out of a job!

really great video and 5 stars

  • I wonder what a 2x12 cab would sound like with 1 bass speaker and 1 guitar speaker. probably awful.

  • Good job on the tutorial. I am a big fan of the Texas Heat speakers.

  • It's always good to plug in a head and a guitar and play a few notes before you put the back on again. It's really sucks to get everything all screwed in and then find out something is wired wrong, or broken, etc. (Sometimes it's not even your fault. I've had speakers that were messed up right out of the box.)

Just a tip from a very frustrated technician.

    lol

  • Good tutorial! I'm currently refinishing a cheap old EMC 2x10 cabinet that I picked up at Daddy's Junky Music for $75. I had no idea what the resistance or power ratings were for the original speakers, and the tolex was torn up anyway, so I picked it up as a project. I've got two Eminence Legend 10516 speakers wired in parallel for an 8-ohm load. If I can get hold of a video camera, I may post a couple of videos on impedance matching and tolexing.

  • Changing out speakers is fun. I swapped out 4 eminence legends with two vin 30's and two g12-65's from 1980. in an x pattern. mixing speakers sounds killer.

  • ive got a Fender FM212, and i'm thinking about using it for a cab.

it seems like a fun project, buy some new speakers for it, i dont know if i should make it closed or not though.

got any tips on where to find some info about this stuff?

  • So, results of this transplantation satisfied you? :)

  • Would love to see a review of different speakers---I don't know much about how they sound different.

  • Really cool Video TTK \m/

Personally, I would have checked if both speakers actually work, before reinstalling the back.

If something's wrong, you dont have to unscrew the whole thing again to check whats the problem ;)+

Keep on the good work, I appreciate evey Video!

  • Thanks man this helped alot :)

  • thank you

  • no soldering?

  • fact: a speaker swap will make WAAAAY more difference in tone than any tube swap ever will. A different speaker can be like getting a new amp sometimes! The Eminence Wizard is a great speaker.

secret of life = we all have a purpose - find out what it is and DO IT and you'll be happy. Is that kid who cuts up a frog just a sadistic brat, or is he a future doctor or scientist? *Every man and every woman is a star.*

    *horns up TTK*

  • Very very helpful, I was just thinking about replacing the speakers in my Bugera cab, not it's a def yes. :D

  • Have you ever tried EV speakers?

  • hey tone king, just curious i've got a marshall mg, do you think it would be worth it to put new speakers into it?

  • @rgjmce666 - absolutely! find a guy here on youtube called dcooper830(a friend of mine) and he has a video of an MG halfstack with upgraded speakers - makes a BIG difference! (I have an MG halfstack too - it's a better amp than people think. Check my videos for settings for getting a kick-ass tone from the MG)

  • @tony93666 actually yeah i've watched loads of his videos and also was watching one yours today too. thanks i'll have a look at prices and see whats what.

  • QUESTION FOR YOU TTK: Is the number on the speaker (i.e. Vintage 30) the amount of wattage? Does a higher number mean louder? Or is it just a tone thing. And if I have a 100w head, do I need four speakers @ 25w (4x25=100). Just how does it all work? Sorry for the simpleton questions, I just don't understand. And finally, my friend told me that if my ohms for my head don't match the ohms on the speakers, that damage can occurr. Is that true? And finally, what is the secret of life?

  • @smacman68 Hey man. Vintage 30 is 60 watts. Don't get caught up in marketing names. Always check the spec on the speakers. Higher wattage speaker typically break up slower. Lower wattage speakers typically break up quicker. Depends on the kind of tone you're looking for.

  • @smacman68 As a general rule of thumb, it's always better to have speakers rated at, or above your amp. So, for 100w head, 100w worth of speakers should be your minimum. Ohms should also match. 8 ohm head to 8 ohm cab, etc. Secret of life? Wish I knew :-)

  • @smacman68 V30 is the size, not the wattage. V30s are about 60W ea, so 2 of those will handle your 100W head.

    Match impedance however.

Caveat to TK comment, re impedance ratings, running hi impedance into low impedence speakers will FRY your O/T as it will try to deliver double the wattage possible, however, running parity (desireable) or over impedance is quite safe. IF you run lower impedence into higher impedence speakers, your amp works less hard, halving the wattage. Volume is a bit less.

  • Good Job TTK! There are tons of cheap cabs out there, no need to spend big bucks when you don't have to. Thanks on the USA Eminence info. Rawk on! \m/

  • @trenticle Thanks! \m/

  • Thanks so much for the tutorial! I didn't know it'd be very easy to do.

  • @risingskater Thanks! \m/

  • You didn't start off with "one of those bad boys right there" =(

  • @joeshmoa7x haha ... sorry man. BUT, I did end with one :-)

  • Hey TTK, awesome tutorial! I was just expecting a before/after comparison, hah.

  • Very informative.

  • thats odd, you dont solder the wire to the speaker?

  • @Mo7Vsta you can. BUT, if there are 'disconnects', you can easily slide them on / off. In fact, you can get a crimp kit w/ disconnects - no solder necessary. There are pros / cons to both. Solder is best if it's done correctly (no solder joints, no stress on the wire, etc.). Disconnects make a very solid connection. Ideally, the best I have seen is wire soldered to disconnects, and disconnects firmly on the speaker posts. Thx man!!

  • Very cool simple and affordable way to change your tone, especially if you have a "cheaper" cabinet and you want to upgrade. Just get new speakers and follow TTK's instructions! Right on!

  • interesting... thanks Tone King!

  • nice change in video TK! i like this ,a lil different from the usual TK vid

  • Oh do be careful popping things into a speaker!

  • Nice demo! Both my amp combos came with Eminence speakers. The Eminence Red Fang with the alnico magnet is my favorite.

  • warehouse guitar speakers are good as well also made in the USA and have their own Vintage 30 copy.

  • yet another interesting, informative video dude. Thanks tone king :D

  • first view and first comment! great video it was very helpful for me if you have some spare time someday i would like to see a shoot out the bugera v5 vs the fender champ 600 and the epi valve jr combo using a les paul thanks

ps do you have plans on reviewing a tone king amp?

  • @drnapster Yeah, a shoot out with those amps would be real intresting :D
