Dr. 1 was a rip of a captured Sopwith Tripe, from what I read, but the rip came out looking much more beautiful from what it was copied from. BTW, in a dogfight you don't give a rat's ass about a stable aircraft that always needs controling, because you never want to fly straight and level. Fly straight and level for any period of time, and you are dead. A motorcycle you have to control it constantly as well, but this also gives instant flickablity, and keeps you integrated with machine
It always amazes me how we continue to just repeat what others have said in books, videos and articles as if those comments were the absolute truth. Most of these so called "experts" on the triplane have never even flown one, let alone been next to one.
I have recently gotten the Fokker dr-1 bug. Awhile ago in New Hampshire, I bought an old oil painting of the Red Baron's airplane at a flea market. I tried selling it but no one bought it. Now because of my interest in the Red Baron and his Fokker dr-1, I will never sell my painting!
320 DR-I's were manufactured ... so those "handful" of pilots were very busy. The Red Barron got most of his victories in an Albatross, yet died in this aircraft. His head injuries from a previous encounter were likely the cause of his reduced flying ability.
it said that the 3rd wing allowed to climb higher and fly faster, 1:06 climb higher yes, fly faster no, infact the extra wing added drag wich slowed it down, but it was a sacrifice well made for its extreem rate of turn and climb.
Yes, maybe the D VII was better. The Dr I was plagued with engine troubles. The Camel had a more reliable engine(Le Rhone Gnome) the Goeble Goe and Oberursels overheated and would burst castor oil. Fokker tried to remedy this with synthetic oils though.
I'd rank it third on overall combined qualities. I think the Fokker DVII and Sopwith Camel edged out the triplane simply because they were more durable. The triplane was recalled several times because of structural imperfections in the top wing. Nothing would ruin your day more than to have a strut break off in a steep dive. The camel and DvII could handle those stresses.
This plane still had more air to air kills then the british spotwith. As for (structual deficiencies in the wings). This planes two 37degree wings on each side (top and bottom) allowed for the middle at a changable 30 to 45degree angle to rapidly catch updrafts that just slowed allied planes. In some cases the Dr1 climbed around 300 to 500 feet in just seconds keeping it safe from the .303 bullets blazing past their heads. Thats another thing those .303's were haevy and did not fly like the 8mm.
Which Sopwith are you talking about? The Sopwith Tabloid? The Sopwith *Camel* was the #1 scoring plane of the war for either side.
It's a better plane than the Albatros D.V, which was in service to the end of the war, but it wasn't in service that long, and there weren't that many of them. Unless you watch Flyboys, where EVERY German plane is a Dr.I.
I guess i didnt see the movie where the racist white man gets smacked by the righteous black man and the yuppy white man shares his parents white peoples alcohol with the righteous black man and the evil Germans try to shoot the woman at the farm and the dickhead faggot fuckface named BobLarrabee gives his useless unwanted opinion to someone alot more well read than he is....
I'm not the one who said it was racist. You're getting so excited you're not thinking straight. Calm down, take a deep breath, and let's get back to fundamentals. First of all, do you know when World War I was fought? I've always believed that people who devolve into obscenities for no obvious reason do it to try to cover their ignorance. But you're among friends. I can help make you less ignorant.
Good action movie but historically very inaccurate. For example, the movie portrayed dozens and dozens of Fokker triplanes with red coloring which was simply not true. In fact, only a handful of pilots from the Flying Circus flew the Dr1 because it was that tricky to fly.
That's certainly true. I think they did that so that the average viewer who knew nothing about the war would know "These are Germans" (as if the Maltese Crosses wouldn't have been enough). It was a breezy summer movie, to be sure.
It was slow and it could not dive at all. also had structural deficiencies in the wings, they were obsolete by 1918 when the d-7 came in which was one of the best.
in battle that was easy to hot

Despite they are even more agile than modern fighter planes still triplane and biplane design has very very serious problem.
It limits maximum speed a lot.
In WW2 fighters won against biplanes easily by using much better speeds of monoplane.

The third wing prohibited higher speeds. It did give higher climb rate though. Hate it when narrators get it wrong.

i hardly think that adding a third wing amde the plane simple.

It maybe wasn't the best in terms of speed but in maneuverbility it was the best in WW1 I believe :).

@gmccord1970 Se5a was better than the DR.1 also. DR.1 was pretty average, really.

@Spartiatai300 Nope. Not even close.

Even though it was a great plane, not many pilots could fly it that well. That thing was terribly hard to fly.

it says the baron got most of his victories in the dr-1, however, only 20 of his 80 kills were actually made in it.
just pointing that out
