Yeah, the slide trick stopped working after OS 3.0. I have the 2nd gen (16GB).

Try holding down the home button first and while you're holding it press the sleep button and let go of both at the same time. Then your screen should flash white and you can see your snapshot in your Photo app.

Well, I have never heard of that, what I do know is that there is an application on the App Store called iCall. With this app you can actually make free calls using an iPod Touch with the Apple headphones with the mic and an internet connection.
