@berkelusa My 6 year-old wants me to paint it gold :) But with all of the body work this baby needs, it'll be a long time before we need to choose a color!
@weldon0m No disrespect taken :) I guess it's just a matter of taste. I bought my first VW when I was 12 years old and loved them ever since. I have long since lost count of how many air-cooled VWs I've owned. Call me crazy, but I think the Karmann Ghia coupe is one of the best-looking cars ever made. The body is an Italian design, originally destined to be a Chrysler front-engine car. Chrysler passed, and VW later adapted the Ghia design to the Beetle chassis. They're fun to drive, too :)
how can I tell the year of one of these? I found one in some woods that has some good parts on it. windows, wind shield, speed o meter, tail lights etc.
@shanegalang2 The best way is to get the VIN number and look it up on the web. Lift up the back seat, and in the center of the chassis, you'll see a hump that houses the shift linkage. The top surface of that hump will be stamped with the VIN. Clean it enough to be sure you can see all the numbers, because depending on how old your car is, the VIN will vary between 6 and 10 digits. Then all you have to do is look up you VIN on thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdatingkg.php .
@pbroenen thank you. I will have to first dig dirt and leaves out, lol, this thing is nearly buried. It has been there for a long long time. The tail light did show 63, so I am assuming thats the year. And it looked like pix of the 1963 that I found online. Thanks for the info.
@shanegalang2 Ha, sounds like the condition I got this car in. It had been sitting for years in an old out-building on a farm. The roof eventually caved in and dropped wood shingles and other debris down onto the car, through its rotting convertible top, and into the interior. Made a nice home for small critters for many years. I spent a most of one day clearing out the shingles and other crap.
@1250am No, I'm not familiar with Ruff Cut. This car was sitting in a broken down out-building for many, many years on a farm near Saint Cloud, Minnesota. The farm house burned down, and the owner sold the land. The new owner wanted the car out, so I bought it. It went straight from the old farm to my place. It was on a trailer for only a few hours in-transit.
Might want to check inside the doors, It looks like it might have had the window rubber destroyed, resulting in water accumulation and rust damage inside your door. depending on where it's been sitting
Had one many years ago.. Painted it "Mercede's Creme Pearl White" It came out beautiful.. Somebody wanted it more than me.. SOLD!

Check out the Part II video. The nose was grafted from another Ghia and has some shallow dents.
