Skateboarding introduced me to Elliott Smith a few years back in a video I saw, and Im so glad I discovered him when I did, his music helped me through a lot of shit. It just occurred to me that this song might be about being perceived as cliche because of pressure to make your lyrics somehow relatable rather than purely comprehensible to you and you alone in their totality. The bridge could be a list of cliches, rather than literal. By the song's end, he isn't a fully realized person you know anymore, but a character you by necessity can't really know. A stickman if you will. Hmmm.
