ashamed that I never heard of Elliot before seeing Cross Continental, but shit! by far one of the greatest songs I've heard. just downloaded like 10 of his songs. skateboarding and goodass music go hand in hand <3
@bubsadoozy Because skateboarders generally have really good tastes in music. Skateboarding introduced me to Elliott Smith a few years back in a video I saw, and Im so glad I discovered him when I did, his music helped me through a lot of shit. Just glad Elliott's being recognized in skateboarding which is also an art, as opposed to little kids playing guitar hero
"A stick man flashing a fine-lined smile/Junk bond trader trying to sell a sucker a style/Rich man in a poor man's clothes/The permanent installment of the daily dose."
Found this by mistake when someone on youtube was accusing "Broken Bells" of ripping this off for their song "October" (which is ridiculous, both very original, awesome songs) So glad I decided to find out for myself. This song has been on repeat for a week!
@ModifiedEvelyn ROFL! epic fail. i had no idea he was dead. what had happened on the 15th was actually a concert in his honor or whatever, idk. didnt go. cuz i found out he was dead.
To me this is one of the best songs ever written; truely amazing hooks and melody with a darker vibe. It will always remind me of 2010 which is the first time I ever heard this song. So tragic he ended his life because he truely got what being a song-smith is all about. What a great piece of music. - Dannyjoe
@Nathanial317 stab wounds to the chest...whether it was a suicide or not is still widely debated. off the top of my head it was Oct 21, 2003...that sounds right, but i'm not 100%
hearing this song, i feel there is not point playing music. nothing could ever match his ability to create great melodys that you can listen to again and again and again
hearing this song, i feel there is not point playing music. nothing could ever match his ability to create great melodys that you can listen to again and again and again
Hey Elliott respect and peace my man, I covered your song Angel In The Snow the past two open mics, your songs are the only I'll ever really cover since your an influence on me and my upcoming third album.
i wish he hadnt left out the lyrics from the early version that went, " and you tell people that they're to paranoid, when really its you they should avoid" always thought that was a really cool lyric
@peacelovemusic2461 - Agreed. Really, the essence of the whole song is summed up in those lines, so probably not one of Elliott's better decisions to omit them. Still, a tremendous song regardless.
pretty much a shame that my local hmv only sells an introduction, no other music shops in the area too. I just hate it when I have to buy things over the internet.
@musicofthesoul85 Elliot Smith was an amazing artist. My jazz band at school plays this song for fun, sometimes throws it into a our live sets as well, and even at school jazz festivals we get a great crowd response for this song :)
Lucky!!! Everyone in my jazz band plays Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA" when we don't have enough songs to fill a set. I wish my bandmates weren't so dumb and uncultured :P
@alisonlikethesong oh man i hate miley cyrus.. well at least i never saw anyone comenting about justi bieber in elliott smith vids :p.. oh wait a minute justr done it -__-
what a great line "im the hithch-hiker youll recognise passing, on your way to some everlasting" is he talking about astral travel? he was definately an empathetic person.. i like the way he adds youll recognise into the line.. as for the source of the song.. i would say it was his genius
haha i heard this song in a grocery store in charlotte nc on a sunday morning. def a weird place to hear it but i was like damn this song is dope i havent heard it in forever
The echoed/wailing guitar riffs, especially just before the second bridge - just f'n epic. He learned well from George Harrison. One generations genious passing his craft off to the next generations genious. Just unmatched. RIP, you were an incredible artist.
@28danimal You're calling ME a retard? Really? Grow up. I'm surprised you can even spell retard right. Good job. Yes, he would definitely feel more affinity with an ignorant young person on youtube who obviously knows nothing about him over someone like me. I apologize.
When i'm really stoned, i have these visions (trippy) visions.. into other peoples minds, and they tell me that i am fucking ripped off my face! All while this song is slightly playing in the background, trippy. Hrmm..
When I'm really sleepy, I have weird (potential) insights into songs. It just occurred to me that this song might be about being perceived as cliche because of pressure to make your lyrics somehow relatable rather than purely comprehensible to you and you alone in their totality. The bridge could be a list of cliches, rather than literal. By the song's end, he isn't a fully realized person you know anymore, but a character you by necessity can't really know. A stickman if you will. Hmmm.
@xxpolishkid Not in my case, unfortunately. I have very, very sensitive lungs and bad allergies, and any form of particulate matter and smoke triggers severe allergic and asthmatic reactions in my mucous membranes including within my lungs. I can't even be around someone smoking pot without starting to wheeze. I know a lot of people with asthma that have benefited from it, but I'm the exception sadly.
I'm not going to disrespect Conor oberst; however, i do not think he holds a candle to Elliott he was the greatest song writer ever to live ...and die. R.i.p elliott i miss you brother always will
