It's funny, I was working outside at 12:30am that night, anticipating this 'hoax' (because I know damn well that it is impossible for Mars to be that large in our sky), and sure enough, I saw nothing like the 'hoax' predicted. I saw mars "KIND OF" close to the moon, but it was just a little bigger than the size of an average star in the sky. Nothing spectacular, but definitely interesting to see the distant Mars behind the moon.
But that wasn't Mars you saw. The moon was nowhere near Mars in the sky on 8/27-8/28, 2010. You saw Jupiter, which was near opposition with the sun, at the closest it has been to Earth in about fifty years (this is true, unlike the Mars hoax). Jupiter was extremely bright at the time, and still is.
Mars was close to the sun in the sky throughout August, forming a triangle with Saturn and Venus earlier in August. Mars will be in conjunction with the sun one month from today.

The whole point I was trying to make was to prove (as if anyone would actually believe that hoax) that mars would not be 1/4 the size of the moon. If you see a bright star in the west in the evening, it is Venus. If you see it during the night to the east or south, it is Jupiter. (they're all planets, not stars).

Secondly, this actually happened on August 27th *2003,* only it wasn't even nearly as big as the full moon. The actual NASA article says looking through a telescope of Mars at 75X magnification during this time, would look as big as the moon without magnification.
With the naked eye on August 27 2003 Mars only looked like big bright red star.
If you got an email about this event, look closely. It says nothing about the year it happens

Mars will be at it's closest point in the new years - not August. This is obviously a hoax if you know the orbits of the planets. I have a program on my desktop that I can click on and it will show me exactly when and where the planets will be at any given date - past, present or future. If interested it's called: simsol20 By THEN we may see Mars bigger and brighter than before. But not yet... :)

it is a hoax but you can see it as big as a really bright star this month it is to the right of the moon and will be the biggest brightest star in the night sky but not as big as the moon

Mars will be at it's closest point in the new years - not August. This is obviously a hoax if you know the orbits of the planets. I have a program on my desktop that I can click on and it will show me exactly when and where the planets will be at any given date - past, present or future. If interested it's called: simsol20 By THEN we may see Mars bigger and brighter than before. But not yet... :)
