Because before Alaska was put into the spotlight, before the environmentalists made a fuss, the Inuit just shot the wolves that encroached on their hunting grounds. The area that they are doing the aerial hunting are near remote and densely forested areas where a village is struggling to survive due to being overrun by wolves who are killing off the moose in the area. Google understanding predator management in Alaska. The program (aerial predator management) was started in 1971. A team of biologists came up with the idea. It is highly regulated by the Alaska DNR. They only do it every 2 - 6 years when necessary. Populations of predators (gray wolf, brown bear, black bear) are thriving in 2009, not declining. By the way, Sarah Palin was 7 years old in 1971. I don't mind if people hunt wolves, just not from airplanes. There's no pride in hunting from airplanes, whereas on the ground, the wolves have SOME chance.

If you know anything about politics, you would know that liberal policies do not create freedom, only more government regulation and control. A country like you are describing can be found overseas. Because before Alaska was put into the spotlight, before the environmentalists made a fuss, the Inuit just shot the wolves that encroached on their hunting grounds. Now, they go to jail and their families suffer if they tend to the land. There are areas OVERRUN by wolves because they have no natural predators since humans have been restricted from managing them. I'm not saying they should be slaughtered, just set a limit on how many a year, and if they should be left alone certain years. etc..

Try to do a little more research instead of personally attacking people. The area that they are doing the aerial hunting are near remote and densely forested areas where a village is struggling to survive due to being overrun by wolves who are killing off the moose in the area. You state the number killed as if the wolves are in danger of being hunted to extinction. These are controlled hunts! I don't like the method, I think its unfair, but the natives deserve a chance too.

There wasn't a problem for a long time, because the indigenious peoples would manage the wolf population themselves. Now that the government + environmentalists have decided that wolves are endangered (they aren't in AK) in the rest of the country, they are everywhere. So, the native people are at risk of being jailed and their families hurt for just doing what they always have. Now it has to be "regulated". They aren't "slaughtering" them. It is regulated.
