Too bad this was done on oprah's show. oprah's voice makes me want to vomit, so does her face. Her real face without surgery and makeup is even more hideous!!
I think the original ending would have been more consistent with her character, but the second ending really satisfies as far as a climax is concerned. The latter is more effective. awesome film!
The ending almost ruined the movie for me, especially the shot where Close rears back up at Douglas from under water after having been drowned; it was incongruous to the rest of the film, and especially Close's character, to which it was almost an insult. Throughout the bulk film you could see the fascinating results of her talent, dedication and exhaustive research in this role...until the ridiculous ending.
i heard every actress in hollywood whanted this part and she just nocked it out of the park she is just so great in this movie I WONT BE IGONERD DAN best line in the movie
yeah, cher won that year for moonstruck or something. gimme a frickin break. glenn not getting the oscar for this role was like when metallica got beat by jethro tull. great movie!
@templedown Hey you might not like Cher winning. But "Moonstruck" was a great movie.
Had "Fatal Attraction" been a better movie than Close would have one. Glenn Close carried "Fatal Attraction" and thats why she's still bitter about the ending of the movie. Which turned her into Jason from Friday the 13th.
I agree with her, the producers of Fatal Attraction screwed her out of an Oscar.
A damn shame they changed the ending. Glenn Close is absolutely right about the changed ending turning a tragic figure with a severe borderline personality disorder into a "movie psycho". And Douglas is ignorant for telling her it was because she was "so good". I know he was trying to compliment her, but it's bs. Her character was much better drawn up until the final scene. I respected Ms Close for her reluctance to butcher the character in order to satisfy a mainstream audience seeking revenge.
@kp1406 His comment wasn't BS---it was meant to convey that the audiences watching her performance were so involved with it that they couldn't accept her killing herself..........the audience wanted revenge. And the studio caved. I personally prefer the original ending. But sometimes audiences aren't looking at the character's they're watching with the same eyes as the actors. Sadly audience polls have been around for so long in the movies and they've changed a lot of films over the years.
I really did not like this movie, it bothered me. It pretty much sums up in just under 2 hrs why our society holds women to a higher standard than men, and I don't mean that in a good way.
Glenn Close has the kind of talent that maybe 5 percent of Hollywood comes close to. If you can scare the crap out of your audience the way she does, then you know you're pretty darn amazing! She astounded me in this movie. She and Meryl Streep are the best of the best, I think.
Glenn should have won both for this and Dangerous Liasons... at least for one of them. I mean... seriously?? Cher for Moonstruck and Jodie Foster for The Accused? I really like Jodie but come on!!!!!
I gotta agree with Glenn on the ending. While the new ending is suspenseful and exciting, the original ending had a lot more punch in a way. It was very disturbing and is really, as Glenn said once in an interview, how someone like Alex usually ends. Alex was so damaged and obsessed that, in knowing she could never have Dan, would ultimately take her own life instead of becoming the typical slasher movie villain.
@DarkDreams420 Yes,absolutely. I found the ending boring - thrashing around in the bathroom and you know she will die. The original ending however...that would have been brilliant and it would have had so much more resonance because it would have smacked of realism. Pity.
@1stDramQueen The oscar that year went to Cher in Moonstruck and Glenn as alwyas took it in her stride...anyway she was two tonys, a golden globe and several other awards....an oscar will come, if not this year (Albert Nobbs) then next year maybe for the Musical version of Sunset Boulevard)
You know, i like Glenn's comment saying that Alex is not a villain because she breaks the stereotype that mentally ill people are all villains. They are people who need help and attention, plain and simple.
