I'm so used to the stoic figure of Lou Reed from his Velvet Underground days and his later years, seeing him bleached out and shimmying, channeling Bowie in his glam rock phase is a total trip. I've seen photos of this Lou but have never seen video. I love it!!! And Dave Grohl pretty much said it at the Grammy's this year. All that computer processing steals the soul out of music. I love some pop music and dance and all that, but there's nothin' like Lou and the VU.
This song first appeared on Velvet Underground's album Loaded in 1970. The song is 40+ years old and still light years cooler than any of the auto-tuned syntho-pop ear pablum currently being fobbed off as the latest, greatest thing.
Lou is the King of "f*ck of all u frustrated music journalists", doin' his own thing. Metal Machine Music is Lou's GREAT MIDDLE FINGER addressed to them who didn't see the obvious, namely that BERLIN was an all time masterpiece.

@nimatek667 Yeah, I guess so--but his lean look is what I try to look like, but without drugs. Lou is 5'5" like me--but he looks a lot taller on stage because of his lean, muscular look--totally awesome!
You are absolutely wrong men this is not Steve Hunter on guitar, its Danny Weiss former member of Rhinoceros and Iron Butterfly. This is the sally can't dance tour from 1974.

You are INCORRECT! I was on tours just prior to that run and know all those guys. That is "Dangerous" Danny Weiss guitar, Prakash John bass, Pentti "Whitey" Glan drums, Michael Fonfara from Rhinoceros on keys, Danny Weiss and Michael Fonfara were both in that band. Go listen to some Rhinoceros and you'll hear that funky, chicken-picken style. Take my word for it. Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner were both on the "RocknRoll Animal" and "Lou Reed Live" records recorded at Howard Steins Academy NYC.

@raychoban in retronspect, 7 months ago i didn't mean to be rude, but fairs fair. let's be honest the state of international mainstream music is absolutely horrific. long live lou 74' - his best live year in a style :)
I like this funky guitar version :-)) and Lou Reed's phrasing. We covered 'Rock 'n' Roll' recently for a young arts student audience and they loved it ! It's on my channel.
FreakHamilton... Any fool can condemn, criticize and complain... An most fools do. I like the RnR Animal version a lot more than this one..Lou changed his arrangments up quite often The great musician you label a hack here is Denny Weis... Wagner and Hunter are probably the most acclaimed melodic rock guitarist of their era. They can play with anyone, anytime. They would have no problem upholding that today. Loud and wrong is no way to go thru life
OK, so is this Steve Hunter or Danny Weis on guitar? I was in 4th grade at the time, so damn if I know - still, Lou had a great band - one of the top 5 live albums ever.
Yeah, Steve Hunter. Words can't do justice to the greatness of R&R Animals. I was so happy to find this clip. It was a time and place, and this is one of the best live bands ever, if only for a short time.
This is probably the only song from that VU album that I like. I honestly don't even consider the two latter VU albums 'true' VU products, that is with the lineup changing so drastically; most people would argue that it doesn't matter, or that a little change-up is no big deal, but the Underground's sound lost a lot of its power after Cale, and later on after Tucker left. 'VU with Nico' and 'White Light White Heat' are among my very favorite albums.
Sorry you're wrong. The guitarist here is the fantastic Danny Weis, Bass Prakash John, Keys Michael Fonfara, Drums Whitey Glans. I had the joy of being FOH engineer for this tour and all the following Sally Can't Dance tours. I do have a great CD but Lou forbids me to release it. Maybe one day
I alwys thought the Velverts made the Beatles look like Herman's Hermats, and Reed made Lennon look like Mike Batt - this is one of his greatest songs - totally love it.
@edmondcarrefour Thanks, I didn't read your comment until a few days ago, but yea, your right about the whole "Firbank" hoax. i love lou reed, but i also like good music, and this rocks my socks off. but its all in the band. rock and roll animal is one of the greatest albums of all time not because its a lou reed album but because of the band. and what a band it is, not to downgrade lou's awesomeness or anything. but jeez, even the most static vocalist like lou can sound great wiith that band behind them

i love lou reed, but i also like good music, and this rocks my socks off. but its all in the band. rock and roll animal is one of the greatest albums of all time not because its a lou reed album but because of the band. and what a band it is, not to downgrade lou's awesomeness or anything. but jeez, even the most static vocalist like lou can sound great wiith that band behind them
