I love the sound as well, but especially the effect how the car like leans backwards when accelerating and then "nods" when gear is changed or the driver brakes. That looks remarkably spectacular on gravel.
I used to love watching these cars , the sound was superb , they reckon they could hit 200 mph on a straight and you had to fight it , no time to blink , I've had cosworths but I would love to annoy the neighbours with this beauty , cheers
but it aint a cossie now is it????????? its good, dont get me wrong but the cosworth won more shit than any other cars 40+ times in a row champion and still unbeaten!!!!!!!!!!! long live the RS
The motor in this isn't a group grup B spec motor. To be honest you wouldn't be able to get your hands on one. This it is still the 2.2t none the less. The rally spec motors were de-stroked to 2.1l meet the rally regulations
Well, you're not quite right.. Exactly this car is number 13 of the remaning 19 Audi S1 group B cars, and the engine is the originally group B spec engine it was fitted with, when it left the factory in 1986.. Here seen at one of the many Trackday in Norway...
@suzuki400boi i know this is old, but you're an idiot, your comment implies that every S1 had its drivetrain removed and replaced with something else. knowing specs and stats doesn't mean you have the basics of knowledge, commonsense. win.
A new VW and Audi showroom opened today just down the road from my house and they have as Quattro S1 in there. I looks amazing!! I think im gonna go down n take sum pics if theyll let me.
Yo...Know it all...It's not wastegate chatter although that's what it's commonly known as. It's called compressor stall. In simple terms, it's the pressurised air in the turbo battering back against the compressor (or turbo) blades. I know...I'm a motorsport engineer...look up 'RC Developments' on the internet.
As a motorsport engineer you should know that surging compressor would not last even one stage. This has been discussed in this very thread some posts ago, and even ex audi employee verified it is dump valve operating. It's not wastegate because S1 ain't have one. And of course it is not als.
Yes it is inn norway. i belive it is a guy named Leif Nilsen who is driving=) he drives the TAXI cars on Gatebil inn Norway.. check out Gatebil here on YouTube:) Awsome cars and drivers..
I believe "northernmonkeee" to be correct, it is pressurized air hitting the impeller-I don't think the cars were built with BOV's or re-circulation valves. With not much of an airbox on the S1 you could really hear the pressure backing up. If I understand correctly current WRC cars may have the same rule or set-up but smaller turbos and more complicated air boxes. Does anyone know for sure. See "Audi Quattro S1" posted by "yneris" for about 8" of this great sounding engine.
yea true about the gasses hitting the turbine wheels, but i think its when the throttle is lifted and wastgate closes, so the exhaust gas has to go through turbo and not the wastegate hitting the blades making the stall noise
That sounds feasible, I've heard that too,it is the air escaping back through the turbo. I was lucky enough to have a ride in an A2 with a full airbox and the sound was more chattery or fluttery and quite quiet, like some of the short Q's without the wings, the "S1 evo 1" I think. I do believe it to be a closed system though. Anybody know for sure?
The cars where fitted with recirculating bypass valves, the "twittering sound" is the noise made by the air pushing past the spring loaded rubber face of the valve.
Are u sure? Can you explain in more detail? I have a Forge 007 re-circ valve(15-23psi spring) and it squeaks/chirps when the throttle is closed under boost. Is this the same?
Yes, the valve used contained a diaphragm rather than a piston, when the throttle is closed the diaphragm is pushed off it's seat by the pressure difference. The twittering is the result of bounce caused by the springyness of the charge air. On production vehicles this was noted as a customer complaint in the service technical handbook as strange owl noises and several modifications where released to eliminate the "problem" i.e. rubber boost pipes in lieu of metal. (ex Audi reporting technician)
Thanks. Is that the same as the oem valve on my urS4? It use to flutter very quietly, barely audible. Where does the air escape from/to, the connection points? Sorry to belabor this but you are the only one that seems to know for sure about the S1. they didn't all make this noise.
From memory; the valve connected between the intercooler input pipe and the metal pipe to the compressor inlet. The valve on your s4 will be of the same design but measures have been taken to eliminate the noise (not everybody is a petrol head!) I myself like to hear things working.
The valve sits on branch lines from the MAF to compressor inlet and the comp. outlet to IC. I love this sound, but realize it may not always be the best on a street driven car. I would be keen to try this older type of valve as I can always switch back. Will it work and do you remember the type and/or part number? The car is about to get a larger turbo, exhaust man., intercooler and exhaust. It already has a ported head & MTM stage II ecu.
I don't remember the part number but I doubt it would sound the same as the whole induction system is designed to be quiet. Maybe a re-plumb with steel pipes and modified air box would give you the sound. Also don't forget that modern turbos have much less inertia.
I have just conversed with someone else who has a Lehmann built 10v and they have also indicated that ironically all that noise comes from the lack of a valve ie:compressed air hitting the turbine when the throttle is closed, it has nowhere to go unlike a re-circ or bov where some energy is released and or re-used. Are you 100% on this?
I installed a factory valve on my own 10 valve (long gone now) purely to aid throttle-down and part throttle power modulation behavior, not acceleration issues. The noise appeared after fittment.
Check out "1985 1000 Lakes Rally Finland-Audi Quattro S1 Only" and "Audi Quattro S1" drifting in snow. Both have great sound, the video in the snow is about 8" minutes of sound. "IMSA GTO sound" is another great one if you get a chance. I am in the midst of upgrading, I will try closing the system and see how it sounds.
Hey Doc, long time no hear. I owe you a so sorry dance, I think you were exactly right. I have done a lot of work, K27 turbo, big fmic, RS2 injectors, em, maf and ecu and no sound. I just recently put an open filter on it and switched back to the Bosch diaphram valve & there it was. Not as chirpy but very fluttery. Drop me a line.
i beleive the sound is wastegate chatter, its obviously an external wastegate, and when the wastegate opens its breaking a vacuum or sumthin like that, but im pretty sure it has nothing to do with the dv
The sound is pressurised air forcing back against the turbine blades creating a stall sound. Its nothing to do with a wastegate, however the S1 20vT engine ran dual external wastegates.
Very cool car, and shame they aren't seen more often at events.
Shame about the ban i think the last of the S1's had the Lancia S4 and the Pug T16's beat, Audi were on the way back to winning form, it lead the T16 by over 6 minutes in 1985 Sanremo. GREAT SOUND I WANT ONE
NOT, you obviously never heard too many group B cars or turbo engines have you? That is the blow off valve, and it`s just like any other Audi S1. Take a trip to a few " A day at the strip" and you`ll soon find out :)
I doubt its shuddering if that's what you mean. Turbo would not last a single stage if shuddering. Also its not bov. S1 uses air metering to settle the fueling. So there's no place for bov there. I am pretty sure it's the dump valve recirculating air. Normally you wouldn't here it. But once you go up to, or even above 2 bars of boots then that's exactly the sound I would expect.
I have noticed that all Quattro S1 have this sound. I guess when you are racing the boost pressure is up most of time and the air rushing back to compressor blades won't damage the turbo too much (if at all).
The wastegate noise you cannot hear but usually on highly modified, dard tune cars it will be like this high pitched electronic noise. The noise winds up as the turbo is spooling. In this video it's either the BOV or the intercooler.
That'll either be a dump valve or the sound of compressed air being forced back through the compressor housing of the turbo when the throttle closes aka compressor surge. The fact that it sounds 'chirrupy' makes me think it's the latter.
...but if that hippy in the black hadn't have thought he was rock hard getting in there to take a "snap" the donuts might have continued....what a c*nt :-)
