  • By the way the two recordings played here, sounded all right, what with surface noise, lo fidelity, and all that. I can only hope that my hearing problems aren't masking the speed issues you are all grousing about.

  • Mose Tapiero was a good ocarina soloist. He cut "Carnival of Venice" for Victor Records. This reminded me of him. I take good care of my Victor, Columbia and other vintage disks because stores are not selling these.

  • you could at least crank it up a little bit?

  • Wow. This is the mechanism in old Bebe Jumeu talking dolls!! This is absolutely amazing, what was the guy saying in the beginning?

  • I have around 48 Edison 1/4" records that use to belong to my husband's grandmother who grew up during the era these records were produced. There are a few that have the label on them, but most do not have (writing is etched onto them). If someone is interested in these records, please send me a message.

  • @langtoronto

My email is tony@olm1.com let me know.

  • Please fix the governer

  • still sounds better than an ipod.

  • sound kinda creepy at the begining of every song

  • creepy

  • the sound quality isnt as good as it could be, i think the wapring sound could be in your motoror on your actual records

  • I like this MP3 player a lot !

  • ouch the slowing down and speeding up is aweful!

I'm sure you can find some parts to make this stop playing like that.

  • you need a new belt now the phonograph sould not sound like this! also check you spring barleal and speed control

  • Could the springs have lost tension over time?

  • If those are wax cylinders, I wouldn't be playing them so much, especially at that age. I'd be finding a way to transfer it over to digital, keeping the cylinders as well as the player, and RARELY playing them unless it was for proof the thing works! Speed is a problem, but at 100 yrs, did they know, with this new technology, that it was a problem?

  • WoW that's great. The speed is a problem, but it's still interesting. That music is over 100 years old. My grandmother had a big gramophone with a large horn that played flat 78 RPM records and the thing was stolen in 1973.

  • Sounds like an easy fix to get the speed correct. My grandfather was supposedly Edison's taylor in New Jersey and he actually gave my grandfather one of these units in exchange for a suit! With the big horn and everything! It was passed on to my Father but (unbelievably) he had to sell it to pay bills back in the 80s. Now I wish we still had it in our family... good luck.

  • @margaretsville Let's be thankfull that he manged to find a way to pay back his bills! (hard life!)

  • It sounds like it need a new belt. If the belt is too loose it will slip and I thing that is what is happening here. Also you should make shure the belt tension pulley is on the belt.

  • Sweat Man. I would kill for one of those.

  • My grandfather had one of these when I was about 5. His dad bought it in 1907. I was 5 in 1989 but it's long gone now.

  • the speed could not stay at one speed

  • That is cool!! I wish I had one of those. :)

  • yeah, I was gonna say... sounds like a belt is slipping. very cool to see an operational cylinder player, though.

  • Your machine needs lubing and/or the governor and/or the drive belt is not working correctly. Use light oil on the governor felt pads. Check to see that your drive belt tensioning wheel spins freely. Replace your drive belt if it is too loose or saturated with oil.

  • I have an Edison phonograph that needs a belt - Model C 2min player, How do I find one?

  • You can get new leather belts from APSCO, Wyatt's Musical Americana, or other parts dealers on the Internet. Just Google. They only cost a few bucks. You cut them to length, sand down the ends, and glue them together with Elmer's glue. After it dries, slip it on the pullies and you're done.

  • You can buy a belt on ebay for a low price! I bought one for my home but these belts are just a strip of leather so you have to measure the length to get it to fit right on the phonograph and then glue the ends together and let it dry for about 24 hours. (look for belt replacing instructions)
