i have a few questions, i am upgrading to an i7 2600k, i bought a new motherboard 'Z68 XP-UD3' 1155 pin, i have a radeon hd 6950, 6GB of ddr3 1600mhz ram, antec 902 case, 24" BenQ screen, and a 650 watt Psu, and am contemplating buying the Coolermaster V8 CPU cooler. ( for overclocking )
Questions:
1# will a 650 watt Psu be enough to support all of this hardware?
2# will the Coolermaster V8 CPU cooler work with the Z68, 1155 pin motherboard, and i7 2600k CPU?
I just intalled mine on a Phenom II x6 chip. Pretty easy to do. The screws that seem to give everyone trouble were pre-installed on the bracket that attaches to the bottom of the heat sink. Took all of 5 minutes and that was going very slow, taking time to spread out thermal paste, lap the plate and processor and do the install.
legoman you are not 17 you are probably about 12 to make a stupid comment like that and have a name called legoman...actually you need to be 10 to have a name like that! you probably have a built pc but your daddy would of made it for you.
Thanks for the vid man. The people that complain don't understand what it means to have a good cooler. It takes less then 10 minutes to install this by yourself. You make me laugh man. Just a FYI: atleast for me, I prefer to put the thermal paste on the CPU itself instead of on the cooler. Spread it out on the CPU in a nice thin evenly spread and your good.
@jeffreyg1970 2 houses? ok haha if you say so, even though i recognized i posted that comment NINE FUCKING MONTHS AGO, you really have NO life, if you sit there and go threw pages of comments... really bro? your lame
@Legoman0323 Dude just take a hike... you are being a douche for no reason and only embarrasing yourself. You are a teen, and one with major attitude issues, this might account for your behaviour and I hope you get some manners become a man in a few years.
Been looking at this cpu cooler for awhile. I wonder though, since it's so big, does it flex the motherboard? I heard bending a motherboard can cause problems in the long run.
@ 5:08 u show which side your using. In the manual that side for the back plate is for AMD specifically. I used the other side for intel as shown in the manual.

Good call on the size, right on. You will need a full sized case. It may be able to be wrestled into a mid tower. If you're gonna do it, might as well go for it and get the Coolermaster Cosmos or an equal
cool, ive recently got this, got sum artic silver 5 also cos i heard the stock thermal paste sux with this cooler =/
since i got same case as u ill probs just use ur vid to help me install, did u say u installed it wrong way round? so the v8 faces opposite way to the way u put it?
Yes the Arctic Silver is a better quality paste, although the paste I used is fine. My computer never ever once crashed since it was built. No, I did not install it the wrong way. I know some mounting screws are reverse threaded (as they should be). The illustrations with the cooler show the cooler facing the wrong way 180 degrees. Good choice on the case BTW
He said it was last minute video decision. Anyway, the point was made that it was an easy install. Nice rig by the way, let me know if you are gonna build another with ddr3 and an I7, I think I'd like to buy this rig from you if the price is right.
It's actually better to put on a nice even layer. He put on WAY too much thermal paste. Granted, it'll squeeze most of the excess out, but less is more. Too much thermal paste will actually raise your temps. I can't say that enough...less is more. tjharlow has a great tutorial about how to apply arctic silver 5.
I certainly do not claim to know everything, as you are probably right about there beeing too much thermal grease, however, I clamped it snug and tight and there was no seepage from the sides and as far as putting it in beads, it may be somewhat better to spread, but there can be a waste and mess involved, and the pressure simply expands the grease anyway. Your imput is always appreciated. You probably have a kick-ass rig, Im about to check out your name to see what hardware I could imprve on.
To Twisted, I did mention about it filling the micro-holes in an earlier post. Does anyone know of an issue with Gigabyte ep45-ud3p and connectivity problems with ethernet controller and win7? I am running dual boot and still using Vista because of this. ( i already went to Giga website for driver updates and windows updates to no avail) I figured I'd throw that out there and take a shot that you guys may already be running win 7 premium. Later, peace
Not much to improve on there bud...I'm a stickler for cable management, but I'm just OCD I guess...I'm always looking for better ways to route my cables and whatnot.
I ordered a CM V8 and will be doing a comparison on that soon to see if it's any better than the TRUE in my setup. I'll have it tonight...we'll see!
Twisted's right though...applying a grain sized drop and spreading the thermal paste is a LOT more effective than having the heat sink spread it out in my experience.
Hornet....To answer your question, it probaby is written somewhere to apply to cpu instead of heatsink. Being a physics minor, I felt it would apply the same since both surfaces are machined pretty flat. The video probably appears that I placed too large of beads on the heat sink, but was maybe the angle and time I took to squeze it out that made it looked that way. So I do not agree that "He put WAY too much..." It didn't even seep out, it was just visible in the sandwich. Just bad video work.
LMAO this guy is so funny :p. Takes 2 or 3 people lol. were not sending rockets to the moon were my favorite. I love this guy. I have the same cooler and it rocks once you get it on lol.
cool vid...sometime soon im going to order my build off newegg and i was getting the CM cosmos+window side panel and the v8, so this gave me a good visualization. Also, nice idea using the water cooling slot for the fan control, im going to do that too when i get mine =) thx
The Cosmos+window side panel is a better choice than what I have, but the case I got was the only one at Fry's at the time. I may try to contact CM and see if I could just buy the window panel. It is a Cosmos so I assume everything is the exact same size) peace
the tolerence for flatness involved during the manufacturing of the cooler heat sink and cpu ensures both surfaces are pretty close to completely touching. The paste "smoothes" microscopic pits and deformities. Spreading is ok, but why chance making a mess when beading is more than adequate.
Hey man, Even though the video was choppy, I did appreciate the info. You have a nice rig, do you mind telling me what that cost you? I am still trying to decide between the v10 and v8
here is a list of the prices from what I can remember: mobo 140 gigabyte EP45-UD3P vid cards 250 sapphire HD4890 (2 of these) case 180 coolermaster cosmos cpu 190 Intel Core 2 quad Q8200 cpu fan 50 Coolermaster v8 ram 100 corsair 2 gig sticks psu 80 Rosewill RX850-S-B 850W 80Plus dvd player 60 HP lightscribe (walmart) hard drives 240 West. Digital 500 and 320gig SS hard drive 150 Wintec SSD 64gig speakers 120 Logitech 5.1 surround $1470
Sorry about the poor camera work. I decided last minute to record this. I just wanted to show how easy it is to install this cpu fan. If you have any questions about the hardware or a Saitek flight yoke or Saitek rudder pedals, leave a comment and I will answer you. Peace.
Will this fit in a Coolermaster 3 Case?

Would you recommend installing this without taking out the motherboard from a case that has a cutout? How difficult would it be?

How to tell how much paste to put on, and at where?
and also, for a beginner, is it more advisable to put them on the heat sink contact surface itself or on the CPU itself?
Thanks =)

Hornet85 2 years ago
Simple way to do it is this and it has worked on EVERY cooler but the S1283 (different kind)
Take a rice grain amount of the CPU...take a plastic bag and go North-South then East-West till its a nice thin coat on the CPU.
All thermal paste does is fill in small mico-holes so you have even content with a cooler.
A lapped CPU + heatsink can actually run without thermal paste but even lapped you still need thermal paste to get the most out of your cooling.
