  • Townsend still writes classics!

  • Roger Daltrey = Coolest Old Man EVER.

  • One of the great, recent Who songs. Dylanesque!

  • love this song!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Love your comment RE: half of the best rock band ever ect. Time for meaningful comments, rather than "Peart is better than Moon" & all that nonsense. Keith was Keith and he inspired so many drummers out there. Thanks Pete for the New material, even though we had a long wait. It was well worth it.Still untouchable, almost laughable are todays bands when they play live in comparison to The Who at their peak. The greatest rockn'roll band in the world. Long live The Who.

  • The funny part about this song is that it has accents of an Irish ballad. Rock-and-Roll all you want. These guys have heard sensible songs before.

  • Indeed a great pair. Like Jagger/Richards or the other duet even more celebrated in british rock history.

  • they are old, tired and still great.

  • @wrsawy "old and tired"? and yet they turn down more hot pussy in a day than you will get in your entire life, douchbagger.

  • This makes me feel like I should have been born in a different decade...

  • 4th cd. dint they hav e like 10?

  • @the47monkeys Hi, I heard the exact same thing, but I think Letterman mean "forthcoming" album. Just a guess and it makes more sense. Cheers.

  • Roger could call hogs & I would think it sounded fabulous.

  • This basically rakes th at hidden evilness of the priesthood over the coals, wtg Rog and Pete.

  • As a huge Who fan, I have always found it ineteresting that other bands, ie The Rolling Stones, could churn through so many band members, use as many backup singers and musicians as they choose, and never be condemned for it (nor should they)! The Who is still a true BAND in every sense of the word as long as Pete and Roger decide they want to keep it together. Together they are the creative poetic voice of great Rock. They have earned it!!

  • Greatest rock songwriter of all time - Pete Townsend.

  • @Ylviste I couldn't agree more, amazing

  • @Ylviste An outstanding genius and just glad he didn't die before he got old, he sure as hell tried!!

    LOL

  • the song is " A Man In a Purple Dress"

  • What Song Is This?? I am a huge fan and still don't know the name of this song

  • What song is this????????

  • tea and theatre you fuckin moron

  • If there ever was a god of music; Pete would have been one of his first angels.

  • beautiful

  • This makes my sad I'm 45 and I miss Keith, John, even Ollie Reed, now Pete & Roger the last two of a long lasting road. Good show fellas..

  • Hopefully, it's kids such as myself and my friends who will bring about the return of the golden age of rock, or at least a half assed attempt at it, for that still would be better than the shit we have right now.

  • @whatistheretotype count me in the half ass attempt hehe

  • Amen to that, even one Who member is better than Maroon 5, Nickelback and any other current band.

The like the name The Two.

  • @SuperWhofan1 Hell, if pete joined Nickelback, they would be the best band of the current era.

  • Half of the best rock band ever is still better than 99% of the lame ass shit that passes for rock these days.

  • you said it man, rock and music in general is in a really sad place right now. Hopefully we can change that soon enough.

  • @divider66 I 2nd that, well said mate,

  • @divider66 Its not bands fault that corporate wankers have told them that they have absoloutly no creative control and there core priority is to sell sell sell plus kids these days are to lazy to learn an instrument properly, they would rather use some crappy computer program to make some crappy beats!!

  • @divider66 Most of the crap being produced (with a few exceptions) today will be long forgotten thirty years from now, unlike the classic rock bands of the 60's and 70's.

  • wats this song

  • man in a purple dress

  • Love them still. Long Live Rock.

  • The Who is still the only rock band in history to get more populer as they get older that pete's genius in writing songs. If Moon and enthwhistle were alive

playing at the superbowl that would of been epic.

  • Still can't accept that "the who" is "the who" when half the band is dead.

  • Agreed.

The WHO is now The TWO.

  • don't get why people are giving you and bdiemert2 thumbs down, you are right!

  • @malabargold LOL! you've pissed off a lot of "fans" out there... some of them thank The Who for being alive and blah blah blah... what a bunch of MAROONS (as bugs bunny would have put it :))

  • GODS!

  • @LuiselPat DOGS! uoy gnikam nuf fo em????

  • Say what you want about the quality of their albums after Quadrophenia or even Who By Numbers but it takes BALLS to got on national tv with a vocal and acoustic guitar.

  • Yeah ,Istill love it.

  • two giants

  • this album is so powerful and its unusual for a band to come out with a record this well constructed 20 years after their last album. i absolutly adore this album but i cant quite figure out why. its just something in the way the songs are done

  • I agree. A great album which could be compared to Quadrophenia. Its Hard was such a let down all those years ago. I didn't know what to expect. It seemed that Pete for a long time kept the great songs for his solo work. I hope the next album is just as good.

  • the still rock

  • kaeden douchebag its called life hopefully death wont touch you if it did you would realize how stupid your comment was

  • Daltreys voice is deeper and he doesn't have the range he used to but they can still Rock!

  • bAM ,BITCHIN,BEATIFUL ! THANKS

  • Endless Wire is an excellent album. I had reservations before hearing it, but it is absolutely brilliant.

  • this is a beautiful song---but whats it about?? Tell me plz....

  • man in a purple dress

  • This is about the scene in the film "the Passion of the Christ" where Jesus is questioned before the high council and sentenced to crucifixion.

  • No, this is about the custom of British judges to wear feminine clothing (dresses).

  • From the liner notes of "Endless Wire": A PURPLE DRESS 4'14

    (Pete Townshend)

Pete: "After watching Mel Gibson's harrowing 2004 film 'The Passion of the Christ,' I immediately wrote three songs. This was one of them. It is not so much a rail against the principles of justice through the ages, but a challenge to the vanity of the men who need to put on some kind of ridiculous outfit in order to pass sentence on one of their peers. • Thanks for that info..

But isnt it also a question to (attack on) ALL religious and political leaders?

"Sit in judgment of all wrong"

  • very right on there

  • The hypocrisy of Religion- man in a purple dress is a priest or bishop.

  • I love The Who, but I'm a bit old school in that I prefer them when Keith and John were alive. Having said that, I really like this song AND Tea and Theatre. Roger's voice has mellowed beautifully and Pete's guitar playing is as fantastic as ever. In my opinion, they're still a Truly Great Band and the incredible music they did with the original line-up will be with us forever. I for one, am really glad of that. What an amazing band!

  • They're the heart and soul of The Who forty plus years later. I am a fan who came thirty plus years ago and it's not the same, granted Keith and John are unreplaceable (both soul and skill), but dare I say Townshend has been the heart beat of the band. As long as he's involved there is The Who. Had he died in '78 it would have ended there. I absolutely marvel at Townshends lyrical depth. I admire his willingness to be honest and personal in an all too shallow genre.

  • I'm going to have to say that Zak Starkey is no where touchable to Keith, but he is the best possible replacement.

  • greatest song townsend has done in years.

roger sings these songs so well. they should do an entire acoustic album like this.

  • Rock and roll's Cyrano, Pete!

  • The most beautiful song of endless wire, thanx The Who for this!!!

  • should of said..."ladies and gentlemen....THE 2!!"...

  • This song could have fit on Who By Numbers. Pete's subject matter can sometimes be too weighty for some people. It's too often he writes songs that even the most die hard fan, like me,can't figure out. Most of his songs I haven't a clue what they're about. And I'm a superfan.

  • Does anyone have the chords to this amazing song??? I really really want... NEED them

  • I don't really like this song, but they still did an amazing job as usually.

  • Great album! And the concerts KICK ASS STILL!

  • Seeing them at the Nokia this Saturday. Can't wait!!

  • Pete is definitely in the top 3 songwriters of all time

  • oh my god, they're so great. we shoud simply be quiet. nothing more.

    thank god we got 'em.

  • Preach on brother Pete

  • fuck shit damn ! i love the who! still awesome after all the years

  • Either you like them or you don't. End of story...a Who fan or not...leave it alone...thanks

  • amen! As Roger said, being a Who fan is an aquriered taste you either hate them or love them, personally I love them, bloody epic band that has changed music forever!

  • Nice folksy sound. Roger sounds so good. Great lyrics, from Pete I assume, as usual.

  • I consider this song a more elegant version of "Who Are You"

  • got 6th row in October. knock on wood. i'll get to see my dad too!

  • It is amazing how much of a of a range they had. They were mod, blues, pop, hard rockers, psychedelic, and a kind of acoustic folk. But the lyrics by pete are always top notch. No doubt they are the greats.

  • great song great performance! still the best band in the world!

  • Amazing. I really love this song.

  • What??? A man in a purple dress? Really.

  • It's a song about the Papacy. For God's sake don't you people even bother to READ the liner notes when you listen to a Who album? That's the only way you understand what Pete's writing about

  • Great bitch slap the establishment song in typicall WHO fashion...

the best song on EWb IMHO is It's Not Enough...

  • Great song, maybe my favorite from the new album.

  • The whole album is incredible. I just hope there will be more.

  • What's the name of this album? I'm sorta new to the who.

  • Endless wire

  • thanks

  • Can you imagine this song being played live in the tommy/quadrophenia years with Mooney and The Ox? It would have been great!

  • too bad theres no bass or drum part

  • no i really cant. I swear some fans are so afraid to "not like" somthing Roger and Pete are doing! ( Its so hard for me to call them the Who these days). Face it people 50% of the Who are gone! Its ok to say it! I am a HUGE Who fan and i still beleive that The Who died with Moon! BUT ITS OK because Pete and Roger is going to make dam sure that all that great music gos on for all generations. Its like a friend. Only a real friend will tell you the truth and how they truly feel.

  • theyre still the who, but theyre not the same who without keith and john..

im 15 and i had the amazing chance to see them in october because Roger and Pete still have the strength and the love for music to keep playing

im sooo happy they continue to do their thing

unlike robert plant from led zeppelin who is afraid to ruin the memory of Zeppelin

because of him, il never get to see zeppelin :( im not angry at him i think his decision is noble, but its disappointing

    they're continuing the LEGEND

  • I think it is so cool that you are younger and love the WHO and bands like Zeppelin. Get every who album you will not be dissapointed, promise. god bless!

  • i think theyre still the who because petes still there.

pete really is the heart and soul of the band.

If he had died earlyer on, the who would have been done right then and there.

im 14 but i got the amazing chance to see them a few months ago.

and let me tell you, the people up theyre playing were not "rodger and pete". The poeple I saw up there performing there hearts out...were the who.

  • You're right.

  • great song

  • good version. it was cut short but it sounded really nice

  • great performance!

my co-worker helped roger pick out his outfit here :D

  • did anybody ever SERIOSULY doubt, that the man who wrote SUNRISE, I CAN SEE FOR MILES, SPARKS, HOWEVER MUCH I BOOZE, SISTER DISCO, AMAZING JOURNEY,SUBSTITUTE, ANOTHER TRICKY DAY, BLUE RED AND GREY, GETTING IN TUNE ....could EVER write any bad music ?

  • I think Pete's writing on this CD (album)was some of his best.

  • That's telling 'em boys!

  • its absolutely amazing that daltrey has maintained a voice as strong as he has after years and years and years of such harsh abuse. townshend and he are demigods.. IM NOT WORTHY!! haha :-)

  • "(This song) is not so much a rail against the principles of justice through the ages, but a challenge to the vanity of the men who need to put on some kind of ridiculous outfit in order to pass sentence on one of their peers. It is the idea that men need dress up in order to represent God that appalls me. If I wanted to be as insane as to attempt to represent God I'd just go ahead and do it, I wouldn't dress up like a drag-queen." P.T. ...brilliant

  • You got it wrong mikeb

  • Ritualism

  • Amazing group...great songs and vocals..love ya Roger and Pete...

  • Stupendous!

  • First time I saw The Who was at Woodstock then in Maryland at the Merriweather Post Pavilion near Columbia, Md. They were touring and their back up band was an unknown British group called Led Zepplin. Best show I have ever been too. Both, The Who and Zep blew away the crowd. From there I have seen them approximately twelve times, not sure. That's not counting Daltreys or Entwistles Ox solo gigs either. I got my tickets for the Tampa, Florida show.

  • Eddie Vedder has the best voice... it's all individual...

  • alright roger daltery rules...but best singer goes to mr.Freddie Mercury

  • Roger Daltrey has the best voice of any human alive or dead.

  • I might have to challenge that one, I believe Chris Cornell from Soundgarden/Audioslave has the best voice around

  • Ha ha ha ha.

  • get real will ya?

  • great song and I can't tell you how greatful I am for still have the pleasure to see those guyz still rocking...they are legends...

    ...and the songs is great...

  • This is outstanding! Townshend is at his best when he need The Who as much as the Who needs him. And yes, this is The Who. This song starts off sounding like a Paul Simon and then, the minute Blood and Thunder Daltry utters his first word, it a Who song. Better than anything since Who Are You I reckon.

  • I had heard that Dave Letterman was going to have The Who on his show. I had the get up at 6:45 the next morning but the who are my favourite band (if you couldn't tell from my name), so I stayed up til 12:30 to hear their new music. I felt suddenly awoken and replenished. This is well writen and GOD Roger was alive. Long Live Rock! Be it Dead or Alive! (you hear me John, Keith?)

  • It's amazing....Roger sounds like his voice has been well rested :) I saw them on Sept. 15th in Ottawa, and it was the best day of my life!!! long live the who!

  • Nothing spectacular? No way. It's great. Radicalism!

  • Woohoo! I can't wait to see them next month!!!

  • Jesus that's a great song. Townshend is obviously never going to lose his writing capabilities. When you got it, you got it.

  • This song is definetly good enough to convince me to get The Who's new album

  • Didnt Pete want the title to be "little boy in a purple dress"?

  • ...let it go

  • This actually brought tears to my eyes...very well done. Love the emotion put into this

  • I'm sorry, but this is not The Who. It's not The Who without Entwistle or Moon. A good song, yes. But it's just Daltrey & Townshend. Maybe they can call themselves Who's Left?

    (P.S. I'm a huge Who fan.)

  • I'm a hug Who fan, too, and if Pete says it's The Who, it's The Who - end of subject. Get over it and enjoy !!!

  • Oh. Damn. You're right. It's a good thing you reminded Daltrey and Townshend cuz they must've forgotten that two of their band members are dead. Good goin, man. This could've been a catastrophy. The Who might have actually GONE ON WITH THEIR LIVES!

    jb.

  • Thank you SOBER8 for posting this....did I mention you FUCKIN' ROCK!!!

  • i read this thing in Rolling Stone mag a few months ago and it said The Who were going on tour... and i laughed to myself cause i hadnt heard anything from now...and then i saw this and Pete and Roger still have it!! thanx for putting this up!!

  • life doesn't stop because people die.

  • cheers, saves me having to stay up real late...in aus its on at 2.45am

  • opening show in philly was incredible

  • LONG LIVE ROCK!!! LONG LIVE THE WHO!!!

  • Saw them at Jones Beach on my birthday. My favorite band of all time. But I didnt expect the show to be any good. I figured it would be aging rock stars still trying to prove they got it. I was dead wrong. THEY WERE SIMPLY AMAZING!!! I am still buzzing over the concert. They were so good!!! Definitely better than U2 on their last tour. (U2 sound like a juke box). And the fact that they didnt release shit album as an excuse to go on tour (like the Stones) proves their legitimacy.

  • Love this new song!

  • ty for posting

  • Saw them in Ottawa last night, I thought the show I saw in '97 was impressive, this show knocked it clear out of the park. Pete and Roger defenitley still have it, I totally agree.

  • Than you from Argentina

    LONG LIVE THE WHO

  • Rog and Pete still GOT IT!!! :^ )

    Thank God!!!

    THE WHO

    LONG LIVE ROCK!!!

  • FAB!!

  • Hooray, new Who music. It's about time. This is wonderful to see. Thank you.

  • Thanks, glad you like. I had to listen to Wire & Glass a few times, but I like it now
