Love your comment RE: half of the best rock band ever ect. Time for meaningful comments, rather than "Peart is better than Moon" & all that nonsense. Keith was Keith and he inspired so many drummers out there. Thanks Pete for the New material, even though we had a long wait. It was well worth it.Still untouchable, almost laughable are todays bands when they play live in comparison to The Who at their peak. The greatest rockn'roll band in the world. Long live The Who.
As a huge Who fan, I have always found it ineteresting that other bands, ie The Rolling Stones, could churn through so many band members, use as many backup singers and musicians as they choose, and never be condemned for it (nor should they)! The Who is still a true BAND in every sense of the word as long as Pete and Roger decide they want to keep it together. Together they are the creative poetic voice of great Rock. They have earned it!!
Hopefully, it's kids such as myself and my friends who will bring about the return of the golden age of rock, or at least a half assed attempt at it, for that still would be better than the shit we have right now.
@divider66 Its not bands fault that corporate wankers have told them that they have absoloutly no creative control and there core priority is to sell sell sell plus kids these days are to lazy to learn an instrument properly, they would rather use some crappy computer program to make some crappy beats!!
@divider66 Most of the crap being produced (with a few exceptions) today will be long forgotten thirty years from now, unlike the classic rock bands of the 60's and 70's.
The Who is still the only rock band in history to get more populer as they get older that pete's genius in writing songs. If Moon and enthwhistle were alive
playing at the superbowl that would of been epic.
@malabargold LOL! you've pissed off a lot of "fans" out there... some of them thank The Who for being alive and blah blah blah... what a bunch of MAROONS (as bugs bunny would have put it :))
Say what you want about the quality of their albums after Quadrophenia or even Who By Numbers but it takes BALLS to got on national tv with a vocal and acoustic guitar.
this album is so powerful and its unusual for a band to come out with a record this well constructed 20 years after their last album. i absolutly adore this album but i cant quite figure out why. its just something in the way the songs are done
I agree. A great album which could be compared to Quadrophenia. Its Hard was such a let down all those years ago. I didn't know what to expect. It seemed that Pete for a long time kept the great songs for his solo work. I hope the next album is just as good.
From the liner notes of "Endless Wire": A PURPLE DRESS 4'14
(Pete Townshend)
Pete: "After watching Mel Gibson's harrowing 2004 film 'The Passion of the Christ,' I immediately wrote three songs. This was one of them. It is not so much a rail against the principles of justice through the ages, but a challenge to the vanity of the men who need to put on some kind of ridiculous outfit in order to pass sentence on one of their peers. I
t is the idea that men need dress up in order to represent God that appalls me. If I wanted to be as insane as to attempt to represent God, I'd just go ahead and do it. I wouldn't dress up like a drag-queen."
I love The Who, but I'm a bit old school in that I prefer them when Keith and John were alive. Having said that, I really like this song AND Tea and Theatre. Roger's voice has mellowed beautifully and Pete's guitar playing is as fantastic as ever. In my opinion, they're still a Truly Great Band and the incredible music they did with the original line-up will be with us forever. I for one, am really glad of that. What an amazing band!
They're the heart and soul of The Who forty plus years later. I am a fan who came thirty plus years ago and it's not the same, granted Keith and John are unreplaceable (both soul and skill), but dare I say Townshend has been the heart beat of the band. As long as he's involved there is The Who. Had he died in '78 it would have ended there. I absolutely marvel at Townshends lyrical depth. I admire his willingness to be honest and personal in an all too shallow genre.
This song could have fit on Who By Numbers. Pete's subject matter can sometimes be too weighty for some people. It's too often he writes songs that even the most die hard fan, like me,can't figure out. Most of his songs I haven't a clue what they're about. And I'm a superfan.
amen! As Roger said, being a Who fan is an aquriered taste you either hate them or love them, personally I love them, bloody epic band that has changed music forever!
really depressing. rock stars should never live on to become middle to late aged men who could be any old soccer dad. i mean it's ok stuff but its just not right.....it kind of puts a tamper on their classic material just thinking about it.
It is amazing how much of a of a range they had. They were mod, blues, pop, hard rockers, psychedelic, and a kind of acoustic folk. But the lyrics by pete are always top notch. No doubt they are the greats.
It's a song about the Papacy. For God's sake don't you people even bother to READ the liner notes when you listen to a Who album? That's the only way you understand what Pete's writing about
no i really cant. I swear some fans are so afraid to "not like" somthing Roger and Pete are doing! ( Its so hard for me to call them the Who these days). Face it people 50% of the Who are gone! First time I saw The Who was at Woodstock then in Maryland at the Merriweather Post Pavilion near Columbia, Md. They were touring and their back up band was an unknown British group called Led Zepplin. Best show I have ever been too. Both, The Who and Zep blew away the crowd. From there I have seen them approximately twelve times, not sure. That's not counting Daltreys or Entwistles Ox solo gigs either. I got my tickets for the Tampa, Florida show.
This is outstanding! Townshend is at his best when he need The Who as much as the Who needs him. And yes, this is The Who. This song starts off sounding like a Paul Simon and then, the minute Blood and Thunder Daltry utters his first word, it a Who song. Better than anything since Who Are You I reckon.
I had heard that Dave Letterman was going to have The Who on his show. I had the get up at 6:45 the next morning but the who are my favourite band (if you couldn't tell from my name), so I stayed up til 12:30 to hear their new music. I felt suddenly awoken and replenished. This is well writen and GOD Roger was alive. Long Live Rock! Be it Dead or Alive! (you hear me John, Keith?)
It's amazing....Roger sounds like his voice has been well rested :) I saw them on Sept. 15th in Ottawa, and it was the best day of my life!!! long live the who!
I'm sorry, but this is not The Who. It's not The Who without Entwistle or Moon. A good song, yes. But it's just Daltrey & Townshend. Maybe they can call themselves Who's Left?
Oh. Damn. You're right. It's a good thing you reminded Daltrey and Townshend cuz they must've forgotten that two of their band members are dead. Good goin, man. This could've been a catastrophy. The Who might have actually GONE ON WITH THEIR LIVES!
i read this thing in Rolling Stone mag a few months ago and it said The Who were going on tour... and i laughed to myself cause i hadnt heard anything from now...and then i saw this and Pete and Roger still have it!! thanx for putting this up!!
Saw them at Jones Beach on my birthday. My favorite band of all time. But I didnt expect the show to be any good. I figured it would be aging rock stars still trying to prove they got it. I was dead wrong. THEY WERE SIMPLY AMAZING!!! I am still buzzing over the concert. They were so good!!! Definitely better than U2 on their last tour. (U2 sound like a juke box). And the fact that they didnt release shit album as an excuse to go on tour (like the Stones) proves their legitimacy.
Saw them in Ottawa last night, I thought the show I saw in '97 was impressive, this show knocked it clear out of the park. Pete and Roger defenitley still have it, I totally agree.
Townsend still writes classics!

I'm sorry, but this is not The Who. It's not The Who without Entwistle or Moon. A good song, yes. But it's just Daltrey & Townshend. Maybe they can call themselves Who's Left?
(P.S. I'm a huge Who fan.)

I'm a hug Who fan, too, and if Pete says it's The Who, it's The Who - end of subject. Get over it and enjoy !!!

Oh. Damn. You're right. It's a good thing you reminded Daltrey and Townshend cuz they must've forgotten that two of their band members are dead. Good goin, man. This could've been a catastrophy. The Who might have actually GONE ON WITH THEIR LIVES!
