The "Gallic Wars" was Caesar's PR campaign for his readers back in Rome. Where previous statesman had relied on the power of the Senate, Caesar used the support of the people to legitimise his otherwise illegal actions, particularly these wars which made him a national hero to the peasants. He used this popular support to make himself an albeit short-lived dictator of the former Republic but was able to pass the power on to his adopted son Octavius who became the first emperor.
