Use sherwin williams oil based driveway sealer, works great. Pressure wash and scrub before hand and let dry completely. Then spray on a day with little wind, works awesome for cold climate conditions where salt is always present. Put one coat on every year and my drive way looks great after 3 years now in Wisconsin.
That's not a bad idea. If the label instructions on the sealer say to clean the driveway, then do so. For those without a pressure washer even liquid dish soap and a push broom might produce acceptable results. Oxygen bleach will also get rid of organic stains.
A belated reply. I took a section of the walkway from my driveway and primed it white, then used a darker concrete stain. After that I sealed it. I was quite pleased with the result, but am not sure if I should repeat the same process with the big driveway, or just leave it be after pressure washing with a sealant only. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

You need to be very careful of oil-based sealers. Some oils can be food for mildew and algae. Synthetic-resin products may be a better choice.

You should pressure wash the driveway FIRST...sweeping just won't due!

my problem is that I set it up like you did, but I fell asleep in the lawn chair while spraying and it all sprayed in one little spot. ;-)

Would you recommend staining a driveway before sealing it (if in bad shape)?

Yes, that is acceptable

I think you should test the method until you're sure it works. Then add that information to what the manufacturer of the stain has to say.
