Nixon, the prosecutor, messed up. I mean, really. Who was glorifying Charles Manson in the press as any kind of role model or anti-hero? Sad to say, this has become the standard for Republican political discourse.
That there was an uproar in the courtroom, I've no doubt, but things really hit the fan when Manson held up for the jury a copy of the Los Angeles Times with the headline, "Manson Guilty, Nixon Declares." The judge ended up questioning the jurors one by one, then denied a defense motion for a mistrial.
August 3, 1970 was also the date "NBC NIGHTLY NEWS" succeeded "THE HUNTLEY-BRINKLEY REPORT" (which ended with Huntley's retirement), with David Brinkley continuing to anchor from Washington, and John Chancellor and Frank McGee alternating as co-anchors from New York. Vice President Agnew had previously delivered a speech in November 1969 [written by Pat Buchanan] accusing the networks of "biased reporting" on their evening newscasts; Nixon didn't like their attitude towards his administration.

Funny Nixon calling someone a criminal..just like Bush calling people terrorists when those two,and their brethren are the real killers,terrorists and reason this world is on the verge of collapse. I would rather sit and break bread with Manson anyday as to look at Bush.
